The date is 113 years before October 7, 2026, not 100. Some accounts describe a riot, but the institutional sources cited here establish a scandal and tumultuous reception, not every dramatic detail repeated in later retellings.
What happened at the premiere?
The ballet was presented by Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées. Stravinsky composed the score, Vaslav Nijinsky choreographed the first production, Nikolai Roerich designed its sets and costumes, and Pierre Monteux conducted. The venue describes the event as a “scandal” and says the public impact came from both Stravinsky’s music and Nijinsky’s choreography (Théâtre des Champs-Élysées history).
The prevailing date given by the theater and several other institutions is May 29, 1913. A Library of Congress exhibition entry instead says May 28, so the discrepancy is worth noting rather than silently treating the date as uncontested. The Library of Congress entry documents a 1913 piano score associated with Marie Rambert’s recording of Nijinsky’s choreography (Library of Congress, “Score for Le Sacre du Printemps, with Nijinsky’s Choreography”).
Was it really a riot?
The premiere’s reputation for disorder is well established, but “riot” can imply particulars these institutional accounts do not verify. The Bibliothèque nationale de France describes audience vociferations and a tumultuous creation; the theater calls the premiere a scandal. Neither source, as cited here, establishes figures for injuries, arrests, or the number of performances interrupted. “Uproar” or “scandal” is therefore the more precise description (Bibliothèque nationale de France; Théâtre des Champs-Élysées).

Why did the ballet shock its first audience?
Stravinsky’s score
The score’s harsh, unfamiliar orchestral language was one source of the response. Stravinsky composed the work between 1911 and 1913 for Diaghilev’s company. The Berliner Philharmoniker describes the ballet as two parts and lists a duration of 33 minutes; that is the orchestra’s program-note figure, not a fixed runtime for every performance (Berliner Philharmoniker program note).
Nijinsky’s movement
The choreography also challenged familiar expectations of ballet. The BnF points to turned-in positions and frenzied hops, movements that made the dance look deliberately unlike the conventional grace audiences might have expected. The venue likewise emphasizes that the choreography contributed as much to the public impact as the music.

Roerich’s designs and the story
Roerich’s sets and costumes helped frame the ballet’s imagined archaic Russia. Its scenario culminates in a young woman chosen for sacrifice, dancing herself to death to appease the god of spring. The Berliner Philharmoniker program note attributes this description of the scenario to Stravinsky: “Old men sit in a circle and watch the dance to the death of a young girl, whom they sacrifice to appease the god of spring.”

What became of Nijinsky’s choreography?
Nijinsky’s original choreography did not remain continuously in the repertory. The BnF says it was reconstructed by Millicent Hodson and Kenneth Archer for a revival from 1987. A production based on that reconstruction is distinct from later stagings that interpret the score differently; a concert performance, meanwhile, presents the orchestral work without the ballet’s dancing (Bibliothèque nationale de France).

Why do score editions matter?
The Rite of Spring is now a standard orchestral work, but its printed score has a revision history. The BnF says it was first published in the early 1920s and repeatedly corrected and revised. Anyone studying or performing it should identify the edition and format: a piano study score and full orchestral materials serve different purposes, and the label “the score” alone may not identify the version being used (Bibliothèque nationale de France).
