Spoilers for “Eldest,” Season 2, Episode 4. Tom Bombadil finally appears in live action, but “Eldest” is not a detour from the season’s larger conflicts: it advances three storylines, from Galadriel’s march toward Eregion to the Stranger’s search for guidance in Rhûn and the hunt for Theo in the southern forest.
What happens in “Eldest”?
The episode follows three separate threads, each shaped by a search: the Elves head toward Eregion, the Stranger looks for Nori and Poppy, and Arondir, Isildur, and Estrid search for Theo.
| Setting | Immediate objective | Episode outcome |
|---|---|---|
| On the road to Eregion | Galadriel and Elrond lead a small patrol after receiving no useful response from Celebrimbor. | Their route is blocked, Nenya gives Galadriel a warning vision, and disagreement over the Rings intensifies. In the Barrow-downs, the patrol encounters danger from Orcs; Galadriel is ultimately captured by Adar. |
| Rhûn | The Stranger searches for Nori and Poppy after they have been separated. | He meets Tom Bombadil, who offers help and guidance as the Stranger tries to understand and control his developing power. Nori and Poppy meet Merimac, known as “Nobody,” and reach the Stoors, where Gundabel shields them from the Dark Wizard’s trackers. |
| The southern forest | Arondir, Isildur, and Estrid look for Theo. | The search brings them into contact with Ents and Entwives, including Winterbloom and Snaggleroot. Their flight is connected to the forest’s destruction after Mount Doom’s eruption. |
The Elven thread makes the Rings’ political and personal cost immediate: Galadriel and Elrond are not in agreement about whether or how to use them, even as danger closes in. The Rhûn thread pairs the Stranger’s uncertainty about his abilities with Nori and Poppy’s efforts to find safety among the Stoors. In the south, the Ents and Entwives make the aftermath of the eruption part of the landscape rather than just a distant event.
Why is Tom Bombadil’s arrival significant?
Played by Rory Kinnear, Bombadil makes his live-action debut in the series. He encounters the Stranger while the latter is looking for Nori and Poppy, and becomes a possible teacher as the Stranger seeks to control his magic. That role gives the meeting an immediate purpose in the episode: Bombadil’s appearance is tied to the Stranger’s developing power, not just a cameo.

Showrunner Patrick McKay described Bombadil to TheWrap as an “enigmatic, whimsical, eternal being” who is “around during this story.” McKay also said, “I like to say that he’s sort of the most ‘Lord of the Rings’ thing in ‘Lord of the Rings.’” Those are the showrunner’s descriptions; the episode’s encounter does not settle Bombadil’s unexplained origins.
What does the title “Eldest” refer to?
The title points to Bombadil’s self-description in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring, Book I, Chapter 7, “In the House of Tom Bombadil.” In that chapter, he tells the hobbits, “But you are young and I am old. Eldest, that’s what I am.” TheOneRing.net identifies this line as the episode title’s direct literary reference (TheOneRing.net).

The connection is a clear nod to the novel, but it should not be mistaken for a complete explanation of who Bombadil is. Tolkien leaves the character’s origins mysterious, and the series’ version of him does not resolve that mystery simply by invoking “Eldest.”
