The finale ends not with the Gemstones judging Corey Milsap, but with the siblings praying over him after he attacks them at Galilee Gulch. Their response turns the climax toward mercy without suggesting they have become perfect people. The closing wedding for Kelvin and Keefe adds a joyful resolution to Kelvin’s relationship story.
What happens at the end of The Righteous Gemstones?
Corey Milsap’s attack brings the family and Milsap tensions to a crisis at Galilee Gulch. Corey is a longtime family friend, and his grief and knowledge of his father’s crimes feed his attempt to kill Jesse, Judy and Kelvin. After surviving the attack, the siblings pray over Corey instead of making vengeance the final word.
That is the finale’s decisive turn: the Gemstones extend compassion to someone who has caused them grave harm. The series does not present the moment as proof that the siblings have shed their vanity, cruelty or selfishness. It offers a choice of grace, not a declaration of moral perfection.

Why do the Gemstones pray for Corey?
Creator and star Danny McBride said he did not want the series to end in judgment: “There’s a finality to a show ending with judgment, and I didn’t want it to end that way,” he told TheWrap. The prayer fits that stated intention: Corey is not excused, but the siblings refuse to let punishment define the closing moment.
The attack makes the prayer consequential rather than abstract. The family is responding to real danger and harm, so the gesture reads as a difficult act of mercy—not as a claim that forgiveness erases what Corey did.

How does the family’s grief shape the ending?
Edi Patterson, who plays Judy, connected the siblings’ recurring conflicts to unresolved grief over their mother, Aimee-Leigh. In her interpretation, the near-death experience helps them move toward clarity and forgiveness. That is Patterson’s reading of the family’s behavior, rather than a diagnosis stated by the episode.
The finale’s compassion therefore sits alongside the family’s history of loss and dysfunction. It gives Jesse, Judy and Kelvin a moment in which they can respond differently, without pretending their old flaws have disappeared.

Contemporary coverage describes the season’s story as involving Kelvin’s queer identity and partner; Adam DeVine and Tony Cavalero also discussed the wedding in a cast interview.
