Spoilers for Season 1, Episode 6, “Udûn.” The Southlanders seem to survive Adar’s assault when Galadriel and the Númenórean force arrive—but that apparent victory is undone by the sword hilt. Theo reveals where it is hidden, Waldreg activates the mechanism Adar set in motion, and a volcanic eruption turns the Southlands into Mordor.
What happens in “Udûn”?
“Udûn” is Season 1, Episode 6 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Prime Video lists it at 69 minutes and dates it September 30, 2022. Its official synopsis is brief: “Adar and his army march on Ostirith.” Prime Video’s episode listing establishes those details; the following plot account draws on recaps from TV Insider and TVLine.
The defenders face Adar’s army
Adar’s orc forces advance on the Southlands. Arondir, Bronwyn, Theo, and the villagers prepare to defend their home, knowing they are badly outmatched. The episode builds toward a battle at Ostirith and the settlement around it, where the local defenders try to hold their ground against the approaching army.
Galadriel and the Númenóreans turn the battle
Galadriel arrives with Númenórean forces, changing the balance of the fight. The defenders appear to have gained the upper hand, and Adar is captured. But the battlefield success is only temporary: the battle is not the whole of Adar’s plan.

Why does Theo reveal the sword hilt’s hiding place?
The hilt is the crucial object behind Adar’s strategy, not simply a weapon to be won in combat. Adar threatens Bronwyn, and Theo gives up where the hilt is hidden to protect her. Adar had already arranged for Waldreg to use it, so Theo’s disclosure helps put the plan back within reach.
Waldreg activates the hidden mechanism. That action triggers the chain of events leading to the eruption. The episode’s reversal is therefore strategic: even as the defenders seem to win the fight, the mechanism tied to the hilt determines the fate of the Southlands.
Why does “Udûn” end with the Southlands becoming Mordor?
The eruption transforms the Southlands into the dark, volcanic land associated with Mordor. It is the episode’s final reveal and the outcome Adar’s plan has been driving toward. The defenders’ apparent battlefield victory cannot stop the larger catastrophe once Waldreg activates the mechanism.
The title “Udûn” is associated with the dark lands of Mordor in Tolkien’s world, making the episode’s closing transformation especially pointed. “Will the Shadow Find You?” works as an editorial description of the threat hanging over the Southlanders; it is not a canonical quotation from Tolkien or a line established by the episode.
What the episode’s Adar reveal means—and what it does not establish
During her interrogation of Adar, Galadriel recognizes him as one of the first elves captured and corrupted by Morgoth. That is the show’s characterization and reveal, as recounted by TVLine. It should be understood as part of The Rings of Power adaptation, not treated as a settled account from Tolkien’s wider legendarium. The series uses Adar to give the orc army a leader with a personal history, while the battle and the hilt mechanism drive this episode’s immediate plot.
