The Rig season two is worth watching if you want a chilly, high-stakes ensemble thriller and can enjoy atmosphere even when the plot gets crowded. The six-episode season moves the survivors of Kinloch Bravo to a remote Arctic facility, widening its survival story into corporate intrigue and threats from the ocean depths. Its cast and creeping tension remain compelling, though some critics found the dialogue less distinctive as the story grew more elaborate.
What changes in season two?
After the tsunami destroys Kinloch Bravo, the surviving crew are taken to Stac, a secret offshore facility in the Arctic Circle. The new setting keeps the characters isolated and under pressure, but gives the series a larger canvas for corporate conflict, deep-sea technology and supernatural danger.
Deep-sea mining is among the season’s stated themes. Rather than leave the crew’s ordeal behind, the story brings the disaster’s consequences with them and adds new questions about what lies beneath the water—and who stands to benefit from reaching it.
How well does the expanded thriller work?
Atmosphere and performances
The Arctic location gives the season a fresh, forbidding backdrop, while the returning ensemble supplies much of its human tension. Iain Glen, Martin Compston, Emily Hampshire, Rochenda Sandall, Owen Teale, Mark Addy, Molly Vevers, Abraham Popoola, Nikhil Parmar and Stuart McQuarrie return. Ross Anderson, Phil McKee, Jacob Fortune-Lloyd, Johannes Roaldsen Fürst and Alice Krige join the cast.

Critics have pointed to the season’s creepy momentum, tense supernatural threat, strong performances and plentiful thrills. Those strengths make the series most effective when it focuses on the crew’s unease and shifting loyalties.
Plot density and limits
The broader scope is also a trade-off. The season layers corporate maneuvering and deep-sea mysteries onto a survival narrative, and some critics felt that the dialogue lost its inventiveness as the plot became more complex. Others noted visible budget constraints or felt the story had gone on too long. These are individual critical responses, not a consensus verdict, but they identify the main risk for viewers: the expanding mythology may be less satisfying than the atmosphere and cast.

What have critics and viewers said?
Rotten Tomatoes showed a 67% Tomatometer from six critic reviews and a 36% Popcornmeter from more than 100 audience ratings when accessed on October 8, 2026. These are changeable figures, and the critic score draws on a small sample; treat them as a snapshot rather than a definitive measure of the season.
