There is no defensible exact ranking of the world’s richest record labels from the available company figures: the reported numbers cover different businesses and measures. Universal Music Group reported €9.456 billion in 2025 recorded-music revenue, while Sony’s broader Music segment reported ¥2.120 trillion in sales for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026. Those figures are not directly comparable, and neither is a valuation of an individual label or its catalogue.
What does “richest record label” mean?
“Richest” can refer to annual revenue, operating income, market capitalization, enterprise value or the estimated value of a music catalogue. Each answers a different question. Revenue is money earned over a period; operating income measures profit from operations; market capitalization reflects the value of a company’s publicly traded shares at a particular date. Catalogue valuations concern rights and assets, not necessarily the overall value of a company.
The familiar names Universal, Sony and Warner are also not always reported on the same basis. Universal Music Group (UMG) reports recorded-music revenue as a business measure. Sony reports a Music segment that includes recorded music, music publishing and visual media/platform, within a much larger conglomerate. Warner Music Group (WMG) is a separately reporting music company, but the figures cited here do not establish a checked, comparable 2025 metric for it.
What the reported figures show
The table sets out the latest figures available here without presenting them as a like-for-like ranking. Currency, fiscal period and reporting scope matter as much as the headline number.

| Company or reporting unit | Reported figure | Period and currency | What it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Universal Music Group | €9,456 million recorded-music revenue; up 6.2% year on year | 2025; euros | Recorded music, not a market valuation. Reported by UMG in its FY2025 results release: Universal Music Group. |
| Sony Group Music segment | ¥2,120,110 million total sales; ¥446,986 million operating income | FY2026, ended March 31, 2026; yen | Recorded music, music publishing and visual media/platform; a segment of Sony Group. Reported in Sony’s Form 20-F: Sony investor relations filings. |
| Sony Group Music segment | ¥1,842,604 million total sales; ¥357,255 million operating income | FY2025, ended March 31, 2025; yen | The same broader segment scope, for the preceding fiscal year. Reported in Sony’s FY2025 Form 20-F: Sony investor relations filings. |
| Warner Music Group | Not stated here | FY2025 report located; a comparable figure is not established here | WMG’s annual report and SEC filing are available, but an exact metric should not be ranked without checking its value, scope, currency and period in the filing: WMG annual reports and WMG SEC filings. |
These figures show the scale of the reporting businesses, not which individual imprint is richest. The UMG number is recorded-music revenue; Sony’s larger-looking sales figure covers a wider mix of activity, and its operating income is a different measure from revenue. Comparing the euro and yen totals as if they were a direct league table would require a common period, currency conversion basis and business scope.
So, which record company makes the most money?
That depends on what “makes the most money” means. Among the figures above, UMG provides a recorded-music revenue figure, while Sony provides total sales and operating income for a broader Music segment. These do not establish which company has the highest comparable recorded-music revenue or the greatest profit across the same fiscal year.

Sony’s own year-to-year figures are comparable within its stated segment: total Music segment sales rose from ¥1,842,604 million in FY2025 to ¥2,120,110 million in FY2026, while operating income rose from ¥357,255 million to ¥446,986 million. That is a comparison within Sony’s reporting definition, not a ranking against UMG or WMG.
Why there is no exact “richest labels” ranking here
- Different measures: revenue, operating income, market value and catalogue value cannot be substituted for one another.
- Different business boundaries: UMG’s cited number is recorded-music revenue; Sony’s Music segment also includes publishing and visual media/platform.
- Different fiscal calendars: Sony’s FY2026 ended March 31, 2026; UMG reports a calendar-year 2025 figure.
- Missing comparable company data: a checked WMG figure on matching terms is not established here.
- Market-share evidence is incomplete: the accessible worldwide record-company share result covering 2012–2025 does not expose its percentage, so it cannot support a 2025 ranking.
A market-capitalization list would require share prices and share counts from the same date for each publicly traded company, plus a clear treatment of Sony as part of a conglomerate. The figures here do not establish such calculations.

Industry revenue is not label wealth
MIDiA Research put global recorded-music revenue at $36.2 billion in 2024. That is an industry-wide total, not a valuation of any company, label or catalogue. It provides context for the market in which record companies operate, but it cannot be used to rank them by wealth. MIDiA Research’s music forecasts.
