Taylor Swift was the richest female musician, estimated by Forbes at $1.6 billion on October 8, 2024, followed by Rihanna at $1.4 billion.
Those figures are estimates rather than audited disclosures. There is no single authoritative global year-end ranking of musicians: Forbes, Bloomberg and The Sunday Times use different valuation dates, currencies and methods, while private company stakes, music catalogs, real estate, debt and marital property are difficult to measure. The ranking below therefore uses the latest credible estimate published during 2024 and gives the date and source for each figure.
Who was the richest musician in 2024?
Jay-Z, with an estimated net worth of $2.5 billion. Forbes’ 2024 celebrity-billionaire coverage placed him ahead of every other living musician. Its billionaire figures used stock prices and exchange rates from March 8, 2024, so the number is a dated estimate rather than a permanent valuation. Forbes’ 2024 celebrity-billionaire list identified Jay-Z’s wealth as coming from a combination of music, entertainment, liquor, investments, art and real estate.
The answer becomes less certain if household wealth, disputed private-company valuations or later estimates are mixed into the same table. Paul McCartney and his wife Nancy Shevell, for example, were reported by The Sunday Times to have household wealth of £1 billion. That is approximately $1.27 billion at the conversion reported at the time, but it is not a clean estimate of McCartney’s individual fortune.

The 2024 ranking: strongest estimates first
The first three entries below are the clearest individual comparisons from major financial publications. The remaining entries are included because they are important 2024 estimates, but their dates, currencies or methodologies are not identical.
| Musician | 2024 estimate | Estimate date and source | Primary wealth engine | How to read it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jay-Z | $2.5 billion | March 8 snapshot; Forbes coverage published April 2, 2024 | Liquor, Roc Nation, Tidal, investments, art, real estate and music | Strongest widely cited individual estimate and the leading comparable entry |
| Taylor Swift | $1.6 billion | October 8, 2024; Forbes | Touring, catalog rights, songwriting, royalties, merchandise and real estate | Strong but highly date-sensitive because the Eras Tour was still affecting her valuation |
| Rihanna | $1.4 billion | 2024; updated in Forbes’ October coverage | Fenty Beauty, Savage X Fenty, endorsements and music | Strong estimate, but most of the fortune is business-derived rather than generated by recordings |
| Paul McCartney | £1 billion household wealth Approximately $1.27 billion |
Sunday Times Rich List 2024, May 2024; AP News | The Beatles and solo catalog, touring and royalties | Not directly comparable: the total included Nancy Shevell’s assets, including an estimated £50 million contribution |
| Madonna | Approximately $877 million | October 4, 2024; Forbes | Touring, catalog, royalties and related entertainment assets | Forbes’ later 2024 estimate, after earnings from the Celebration Tour |
| Herb Alpert | Approximately $850 million | Secondary estimates, including Celebrity Net Worth | Music, A&M Records, art and investments | Plausible and widely repeated, but not supported by a comparably transparent Forbes or Bloomberg 2024 calculation |
| Beyoncé | $760 million | As of May 2024; Forbes | Music, touring, catalog, brands and investments | Do not describe her as a billionaire in a 2024 article; earlier estimates referred to different dates |
| Bono | Approximately $700 million–$800 million | Secondary estimates; Celebrity Net Worth | U2, catalog, touring and investments | Approximate range, not a transparent 2024 primary-source valuation |
| Andrew Lloyd Webber | £513 million Approximately $651 million |
Sunday Times Rich List 2024; Rich List archive | Theater ownership, musical copyrights, productions and real estate | One of the stronger UK-specific estimates, but retained in pounds because the original list is UK-based |
| Elton John | £470 million | Sunday Times Rich List 2024; reported by AP News | Music catalog, touring, royalties and entertainment assets | UK estimate; currency conversion and methodology prevent a precise global rank |
| Celine Dion | $550 million | October 8, 2024; Forbes | Las Vegas residencies, touring, catalog and royalties | Major individual estimate, substantially supported by long-running residency income |
| Barbra Streisand | $460 million | October 2024; Forbes | Music, film, publishing, real estate and investments | Combined entertainment and investment fortune |
| Dolly Parton | $450 million | May 2024; Forbes | Dollywood, catalog ownership, music and investments | Her theme-park and business interests are central to the estimate |
| Mick Jagger | £415 million | Sunday Times Rich List 2024; News UK | The Rolling Stones, touring, catalog and royalties | UK estimate; not directly interchangeable with the Forbes dollar figures |
| Katy Perry | $350 million | October 2024; Forbes | Music rights, touring, endorsements and investments | Includes the reported $225 million sale of music rights and royalties to Litmus Music |
All dollar amounts are estimates. A figure is not an audited statement of cash, and the presence of a name in this table does not mean that every number was calculated using the same method.
The richest female musicians in 2024
- Taylor Swift — $1.6 billion, Forbes estimate dated October 8, 2024.
- Rihanna — $1.4 billion, Forbes 2024 estimate.
- Madonna — approximately $877 million, Forbes estimate dated October 4, 2024.
- Beyoncé — $760 million, Forbes estimate as of May 2024.
- Celine Dion — $550 million, Forbes estimate from October 2024.
- Barbra Streisand — $460 million, Forbes estimate from October 2024.
- Dolly Parton — $450 million, Forbes estimate from May 2024.
- Katy Perry — $350 million, Forbes estimate from October 2024.
Swift’s lead over Rihanna is meaningful within Forbes’ October comparison, but neither number should be treated as a timeless fact. Swift’s estimate rose from approximately $1.1 billion in Forbes’ early-2024 billionaire coverage to $1.6 billion in October. Rihanna remained at approximately $1.4 billion. The difference reflects changing catalog values, income and asset estimates, not necessarily money deposited in a bank account.
Beyoncé illustrates why dates matter. Forbes had previously reported an estimate above $800 million in late 2023, but its May 2024 estimate was $760 million. The later figure is the one to use for a 2024 ranking unless the earlier date is explicitly identified.
How Taylor Swift built a primarily music-derived billion-dollar fortune
Swift was the clearest 2024 example of a musician reaching billionaire status primarily through songwriting and performing rather than through a large unrelated consumer-products company. Forbes described her as the first musician to reach that milestone primarily through music.
The careful version of that claim is primarily music-derived, not entirely earned from music. Forbes’ early 2024 estimate of $1.1 billion attributed roughly $500 million to music royalties and touring, roughly $500 million to the rising value of her catalog, and roughly $125 million to real estate. Bloomberg’s detailed analysis also included the value of music released since 2019, ticket sales, merchandise, Spotify and YouTube income, real estate and royalties. Bloomberg said its touring and music calculations were net of estimated taxes, commissions, production costs and other expenses. Read Bloomberg’s analysis of Swift’s wealth.
The Eras Tour shows the difference between revenue and wealth. Pollstar estimated that the completed tour generated approximately $2.2 billion in gross ticket sales from about 10.055 million tickets by its December 8, 2024 conclusion. That does not mean Swift personally earned $2.2 billion. Gross ticket revenue must be reduced for promoters, venues, production, crew, taxes, commissions and other costs before estimating the artist’s income. Pollstar’s tour report is a touring-revenue figure, not a net-worth statement.
Who became wealthy mainly through music?
For musicians with long careers, the largest music-related assets are often not current album sales. They include songwriting copyrights, publishing rights, master recordings, touring businesses, merchandising agreements, residency contracts and ownership of a catalog that can continue producing royalties for decades.

Swift is the strongest modern example of a fortune in which the music itself is the principal wealth engine. Her songwriting, re-recorded albums, catalog appreciation, touring and merchandise all reinforce one another. Real estate and investments are part of the total, but the public estimates do not depend on a cosmetics or liquor empire.
Rank #2
Paul McCartney
McCartney’s wealth is rooted in The Beatles’ songwriting and recording legacy, his solo catalog, touring and royalties. His reported £1 billion figure must nevertheless be labeled as the wealth of Paul and Nancy McCartney, not a verified personal net worth. AP reported that approximately £50 million of the Sunday Times total was attributable to Shevell. The household estimate is therefore valuable context, but it cannot be placed on an entirely equal footing with Forbes’ individual estimates.
Madonna
Madonna’s estimated $877 million fortune reflects decades of recordings, publishing, touring and other entertainment income. The timing of the estimate is important: Forbes’ October figure followed earnings from the final leg of her Celebration Tour. Tour income can increase wealth, but a tour’s gross receipts are not the same as the performer’s take-home earnings.
Celine Dion
Dion’s estimated $550 million fortune was attributed substantially to her Las Vegas residencies, alongside recordings, touring and royalties. Residencies can be particularly powerful wealth engines because they create repeated high-value performances without the same global travel schedule as a conventional arena tour.
Beyoncé
Beyoncé’s $760 million Forbes estimate includes the cumulative effect of music, touring, catalog income, brands and investments. Her career demonstrates how a music catalog and live-performance business can be combined with commercial partnerships without making it accurate to call her a billionaire in 2024.
Dolly Parton
Parton’s $450 million estimate was not simply a calculation of record royalties. Her music catalog and songwriting are important, but Dollywood, investments and related businesses are also major parts of the fortune. This is a recurring pattern among the wealthiest musicians: the original creative asset creates fame and income, while ownership of businesses compounds it.
Who became wealthy mainly through business?
The phrase richest musician can obscure the most important fact about several names on the list: their music career supplied the audience, brand recognition and negotiating power, but their greatest asset may be a company rather than a recording.
Jay-Z: liquor, entertainment and investments
Jay-Z’s $2.5 billion estimate is a diversified business fortune with music at its foundation. Forbes identified Roc Nation, Tidal, investments, art, real estate and liquor holdings as important sources. He sold 50% of Armand de Brignac to LVMH for at least $300 million, and Bacardi acquired a majority stake in D’Ussé in a transaction reported at $750 million. Those reported deals help explain the scale of his wealth, but transaction values should not be mistaken for his personal profit or current net worth.
Rihanna: Fenty Beauty and Savage X Fenty
Forbes estimated Rihanna at $1.4 billion, but reported that much of the fortune came from Fenty Beauty and Savage X Fenty rather than music royalties. Her music career created global reach and brand power; ownership in consumer businesses converted that reach into a much larger financial asset.
Herb Alpert: records, art and investments
Secondary estimates place Herb Alpert’s wealth at approximately $850 million. The estimate is associated with his music career, the founding and sale of A&M Records, art and investments. Because the figure is not supported by a similarly transparent 2024 Forbes or Bloomberg calculation, it belongs in the approximate category rather than in a precise ordinal ranking.
Andrew Lloyd Webber: theater intellectual property
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunday Times estimate of £513 million reflects much more than personal performance income. His fortune is tied to ownership and control of musical copyrights, theater productions, theater businesses and real estate. In this sense, he is a musician and composer whose wealth engine resembles an intellectual-property company.
Selena Gomez: a boundary case
Selena Gomez belongs in a broad definition of musician because she has released music and performed as a recording artist. Bloomberg estimated her net worth at $1.3 billion in September 2024, but the estimate was driven overwhelmingly by Rare Beauty. TIME reported that approximately 81% of the figure came from the cosmetics company, while music tours contributed less than 5% and album and record sales less than 2%.
That estimate was also contested. Axios reported that Rare Beauty’s proposed $2 billion valuation had not been validated by an actual sale and that the sales process had been paused. The most accurate wording is therefore: Bloomberg estimated Gomez’s wealth at $1.3 billion, largely because of Rare Beauty, but the valuation was not based entirely on realized sale proceeds. She should appear in a broad-definition sidebar, not in a principal ranking of fortunes built primarily through music.
Broad-definition inclusion: is Selena Gomez a musician-billionaire?
There are two defensible answers, depending on the question being asked:
- For a list of wealthy celebrities who also make music: Gomez can be included using Bloomberg’s $1.3 billion estimate.
- For a list of musicians whose fortunes were principally created by music: Gomez should be separated because Rare Beauty accounted for the overwhelming majority of Bloomberg’s estimate.
This distinction is not a criticism of Gomez’s achievements. It is a classification issue. A person can be both a musician and a business founder, but those facts do not make the resulting fortune music-derived.
Why different richest-musician lists disagree
1. The valuation date changes the answer
Forbes’ celebrity-billionaire figures used a March 8, 2024 wealth snapshot. Its later October article valued Swift at $1.6 billion. Bloomberg estimated Gomez in September. The Sunday Times published its UK list in May. These are not competing descriptions of one identical moment.

Swift’s $1.1 billion and $1.6 billion figures can both be correct because they refer to different dates. A responsible article puts the date beside the number instead of declaring that one is universally correct.
2. Private companies are difficult to value
A public company has a visible share price. A private cosmetics, alcohol, entertainment or technology company does not. Analysts typically estimate the value of a private stake from comparable companies, recent transactions, revenue multiples and other evidence. Bloomberg says its Billionaires Index values public shares at current market prices and estimates private companies using comparable-company valuations and transactions. See Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index methodology.
That makes a proposed valuation different from cash received in a completed sale. The Rare Beauty dispute illustrates how a private-company assumption can materially affect an estimated fortune.
Rank #4
3. Catalog value is not the same as annual royalties
A music catalog can be valued as an income-producing asset. Its price depends on the stability of royalties, ownership of publishing and master rights, the age and popularity of the songs, licensing potential and expected future income. A catalog valuation may therefore rise even before the artist receives new cash, and it can fall if assumptions about future revenue change.

The Sunday Times Rich List is UK-focused and may report couples or families together. The McCartney figure is the most important example for this ranking. Saying that Paul McCartney had £1 billion personally would overstate what the source actually established.
5. Currency conversion creates artificial precision
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s £513 million and Elton John’s £470 million should remain in pounds. A dollar equivalent can help international readers, but it depends on the exchange rate and date. It should never be used to imply a precise position against a Forbes estimate denominated in dollars.
6. Wealth is not income, sales or gross revenue
Annual earnings measure money generated during a period. Net worth is the estimated value of assets after liabilities. A tour gross measures ticket sales before the deductions that determine the artist’s income. Album sales measure units or revenue, not the value of the artist’s entire estate. These categories cannot be substituted for one another.

They are useful estimates, but their reliability varies significantly. Forbes and Bloomberg are the strongest sources in this group because they identify valuation dates and use financial research. The Sunday Times is valuable for UK-based fortunes, provided its household and currency conventions are preserved. Secondary celebrity-net-worth sites can help identify names and broad ranges, but their calculations are usually less transparent.

Forbes says its broader wealth methodology examines public and private company stakes, real estate, art and other assets, subtracts debt, and uses records such as regulatory filings, court documents and probate records. This explains why a Forbes number should be treated as a researched estimate, not as a personal balance sheet released by the musician.
Celebrity Net Worth’s current list, for example, gives later or different figures such as Swift at $1.8 billion, Beyoncé at $1 billion and Gomez at $1 billion. Those numbers may reflect updates after 2024 or a different methodology. They should not be silently imported into an article specifically dated 2024. View the secondary comparison list.
Why generic top-10 lists can be misleading
Many online rankings combine Wikipedia, Celebrity Net Worth, Forbes, The Sunday Times and unattributed estimates without explaining the differences. One July 2024 list, for example, ranked Rihanna first and Swift third while reporting Celine Dion at $800 million. It was published before Forbes’ October update and used incompatible sources, while later Forbes coverage placed Dion at $550 million. The mixed-source example is available here.
The problem is not that every secondary estimate is necessarily wrong. The problem is that a list can create a false sense of precision by putting a household figure, a private-company valuation, a current celebrity-site estimate and a dated Forbes figure into one ranked column. The better approach is to identify the source, date, wealth basis and primary wealth engine for every person.

What about Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley and other deceased artists?
Deceased musicians should be excluded from a ranking of the richest living musicians. Their catalogs, trademarks and likenesses may continue to generate substantial revenue, but that money belongs to an estate, trust, heirs or corporate entities rather than to a living individual.
Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley, Bob Marley and Freddie Mercury are therefore better discussed in a separate estate or posthumous-earnings feature. Forbes’ 2024 dead-celebrity coverage measured annual posthumous earnings and catalog-related income; it was not a directly comparable ranking of personal net worth. See Forbes’ 2024 posthumous-earnings coverage.
A practical definition of richest musician
For this article, richest musician means a living individual who is substantially known as a singer, rapper, songwriter, composer, producer or performing musician, ranked by estimated personal net worth rather than annual income.
That definition carries several rules:
- Living individuals are the default; estates are treated separately.
- Actors who also record music are boundary cases and must be labeled, as with Selena Gomez.
- Spouses’ assets are excluded from an individual ranking unless the source reports only household wealth, in which case the limitation is stated.
- Band wealth is not assigned to one member unless a source provides an individual estimate.
- Company valuations, catalog valuations and real estate are included only as estimated assets, not as cash in hand.
- Every figure retains its source and approximate valuation date.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who was the richest musician in the world in 2024?
Jay-Z was the richest living musician under the strongest comparable 2024 estimate. Forbes valued his net worth at approximately $2.5 billion.
Was Taylor Swift richer than Rihanna in 2024?
Yes, according to Forbes’ October 8, 2024 estimates. Swift was valued at $1.6 billion and Rihanna at $1.4 billion. Swift’s estimate was primarily music-derived, while Rihanna’s fortune came mainly from Fenty Beauty and Savage X Fenty.
Was Paul McCartney personally worth £1 billion?
Not conclusively based on the 2024 source. The Sunday Times reported £1 billion in household wealth for Paul and Nancy McCartney, and approximately £50 million was attributed to Nancy Shevell. The figure should not be presented as an uncontested personal net worth for McCartney.
Is Selena Gomez definitely a billionaire?
No. Bloomberg estimated her wealth at $1.3 billion in September 2024, largely because of Rare Beauty. That valuation was challenged because the proposed $2 billion company valuation had not been validated by an actual sale.
Did Taylor Swift personally earn $2.2 billion from the Eras Tour?
No. Pollstar estimated approximately $2.2 billion in gross ticket sales across about 10.055 million tickets. Gross revenue is reduced by promoters, venues, production, crew, taxes, commissions and other costs before determining the artist’s earnings.
Which musician became a billionaire mainly through music?
Taylor Swift was the clearest 2024 example. Forbes described her as the first musician to reach billionaire status primarily through songwriting and performing, although her total estimate also included real estate, merchandise, investments and other assets.
Are celebrity net-worth figures audited?
Generally, no. Forbes, Bloomberg and The Sunday Times produce researched estimates using public records, market prices, comparable companies and other evidence, but private assets, debt, catalogs and household property prevent the figures from being audited personal balance sheets.
The Bottom Line
For 2024, the most defensible answer is Jay-Z at approximately $2.5 billion, followed by Taylor Swift at $1.6 billion and Rihanna at $1.4 billion in Forbes estimates. Swift was the standout musician whose fortune was built primarily through music; Jay-Z and Rihanna became richer by turning musical fame into ownership of businesses and investments. Paul McCartney’s reported £1 billion belongs to a household estimate, while Selena Gomez’s $1.3 billion status depends heavily on a disputed Rare Beauty valuation. The dates and methods matter as much as the headline numbers.
