No—the Hulu streaming service did not shut down across the United States in February 2026. The date that appeared in widely shared headlines, February 5, 2026, was the confirmed end of Hulu on Nintendo Switch in the Americas. Hulu remains available as a standalone U.S. subscription and app as of August 10, 2026, although Disney is continuing to move Hulu content and features into Disney+.
If you saw the January headline that Hulu was “officially shutting down in February,” it was easy to assume that every Hulu subscriber would lose access. That interpretation was wrong.
February 5 was a real shutdown date—but it applied to Hulu on Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED, not Hulu as a nationwide streaming service. Disney has announced plans to create a more unified Disney+ and Hulu experience, but it has not publicly confirmed a final date for shutting down the standalone Hulu app in the United States.
What actually shut down on February 5, 2026?
Nintendo’s official support notice says Hulu was removed from the Nintendo eShop on November 6, 2025. The Hulu service then stopped operating on Nintendo Switch on February 5, 2026.

This was a device-platform discontinuation. It did not announce the end of Hulu on Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, smart TVs, phones, web browsers, Xbox, or other supported platforms. Nintendo’s official discontinuation notice is the source for the February 5 date.
In other words, the accurate headline would have been: “Hulu shut down on Nintendo Switch in February.” Saying simply that “Hulu is shutting down” made a platform-specific change sound like the termination of the entire service.
Why did people think all of Hulu was closing?
The Nintendo news arrived while Disney was already discussing a major change to Hulu’s place in its streaming business.
On August 6, 2025, Disney announced plans to fully integrate Hulu into Disney+ and create a unified app experience. Disney described the goal as bringing Disney entertainment, general-entertainment programming, children’s content, news, and sports into a more connected product. The company also cited better personalization, engagement, advertising, and operating efficiency as reasons for the integration.
Disney said the unified experience was expected in 2026, but that announcement did not set February 5—or any other specific February date—as a nationwide Hulu shutdown date. The original announcement is documented in Disney’s August 2025 earnings transcript.
The January 8, 2026 article from Tom’s Guide correctly connected February 5 with the Nintendo Switch discontinuation. The problem was that the headline and broader framing encouraged readers to apply that date to Hulu generally, even while noting that Disney had not published a nationwide shutdown date of its own.
Four different things are being confused
“Hulu is shutting down” can refer to four separate developments. They should not be treated as interchangeable:

The most accurate description of Disney’s strategy is: Disney is building a unified Disney+/Hulu experience, but the standalone Hulu app has not been given a confirmed U.S. shutdown date.
What has Disney said about the timing?
The public timeline points to a phased migration rather than a February cutoff:

These statements may appear contradictory, but they can describe different stages of the same strategy. Disney can be working toward eventually consolidating the technology while keeping the standalone Hulu app available during the transition. The reported internal document may indicate a long-term direction, but it does not establish a public deadline.
Is Disney+ replacing the Hulu app right now?
Not completely. Eligible Hulu subscribers can already access some Hulu on-demand programming through Disney+. Disney’s help documentation says subscribers can continue using the Hulu app and website, while Hulu content is also being incorporated into Disney+.

To try Hulu content through Disney+:
- Open the Disney+ app or visit DisneyPlus.com.
- Sign in with the MyDisney account and email address associated with your Hulu subscription.
- Look for the Hulu icon in Disney+’s top navigation or browse the Disney+ home page.
- If Disney offers the option, link the Hulu profile to a Disney+ profile.
Disney says profile linking can bring over most Hulu watch history, recommendations, and “My Stuff” titles so they can appear in Disney+ areas such as Continue Watching and Watchlist. The transfer is not guaranteed to be perfect: Disney warns that some titles, history entries, or Watchlist items may not appear.
Use the same email address first. If Disney+ shows no Hulu access, a common explanation is that the user signed in with a different email or MyDisney account than the one attached to the Hulu subscription.
Do Hulu subscribers have to buy Disney+?
Not necessarily. Disney’s current product information says eligible Hulu subscribers can sign in to Disney+ and access Hulu content without adding a separate Disney+ subscription or changing their Hulu plan. Eligibility and features vary by plan, however, so this should not be interpreted as a promise that every Hulu account receives the same Disney+ experience.

Disney has also said that customers can continue to purchase Hulu and Disney+ separately. A Hulu subscriber should not cancel or change a plan merely because of the February 5 headline.

What Hulu + Live TV customers need to know
Hulu + Live TV is the biggest reason not to delete the Hulu app yet.

- Hulu on-demand programming may be available through Disney+ for eligible plans.
- Hulu + Live TV is not yet available inside Disney+.
- Live channels should still be accessed through the Hulu app or Hulu website.
- DVR recordings remain available through Hulu.
- Hulu add-on content remains in Hulu rather than moving completely into Disney+.
Therefore, a Hulu + Live TV customer should continue using Hulu for live programming, DVR recordings, and add-ons. The instruction to “just move to Disney+” is incomplete and could cause a subscriber to lose access to important features if they delete Hulu prematurely.

Who can link a Hulu profile to Disney+?
The profile-linking feature is being rolled out with limitations. Disney’s profile-linking help page identifies several cases where a user may not be able to link profiles:
- Subscribers with a Hulu Live TV plan
- Subscribers with the Disney+, Hulu, Max bundle
- Hulu add-on subscribers
- Hulu Kids Profiles
- Profiles for users under 18
- Accounts where the feature has not reached the user yet
Even when linking is available, not every piece of Hulu data or every title is guaranteed to transfer. If the option does not appear, that does not mean the Hulu subscription has been canceled. It may simply reflect a plan limitation, account mismatch, age restriction, or the ongoing rollout.

What happens if the Hulu app eventually disappears?
Disney’s long-term direction is clear even though the final date is not. The company wants customers to experience Disney+ and Hulu more seamlessly, and its 2025 announcement called for full integration. Disney’s February earnings guidance pointed toward the end of 2026 for the one-app experience, while March shareholder remarks referred to the unified experience arriving later in 2026.
The May 2026 rollout—profile linking, synchronized watch history, and watchlists—shows that the migration is already underway. A subsequent report based on an alleged internal “Project Gemini” document suggested that Disney could eventually decommission the standalone Hulu app and its technology after customers move to Disney+.
But there is an important distinction between planned integration and a confirmed shutdown notice. Disney also told Variety in May that it had no current plans to sunset the Hulu app, and its official help pages continued to direct subscribers to Hulu for Live TV and add-ons. As of August 10, 2026, there is no publicly confirmed nationwide date on which the standalone U.S. Hulu app will stop working.
Even if the app eventually disappears, that would not necessarily mean that the Hulu brand, Hulu programming, or Hulu subscription options disappear at the same time. Disney could preserve Hulu as a content brand or plan while delivering more of the service through Disney+.
The bottom line for Nintendo Switch users
If you watched Hulu on a Nintendo Switch, the February 5 shutdown was relevant to you: the app no longer works on that platform. You will need another supported device for Hulu, or Disney+ for eligible on-demand Hulu access.

If you watched Hulu anywhere else, February 5 was not the end of your subscription. Keep the Hulu app for now, especially if you use Live TV, DVR, or add-ons. You can experiment with Disney+ and profile linking, but there is no need to buy a new subscription, cancel Hulu, or change your billing solely because of the original headline.
