Across six episodes, it focuses on the ruler and the people drawn into her orbit—not on a real government or a documentary account.
What is The Regime about?
The series follows Chancellor Elena Vernham through a year inside the palace as her modern European regime begins to unravel. The emphasis is on the ruler’s conduct and the people around her, rather than a procedural account of state institutions. Kate Winslet, who also served as an executive producer, told the AP of the script: “I’ve never read a script like this before. I’ve never laughed so much at the material that was in front of me, as we did every single day, and I really just felt this was an exciting, challenging, terrifying opportunity for me to step totally out of my comfort zone.” Read the Associated Press interview.
Is The Regime based on a true story?
No: the story is set in a fictional European country, and Vernham is not presented as the leader of a named real nation. The available official description and AP account do not establish a definitive historical inspiration or a one-to-one real-world counterpart, so it is best understood as political fiction rather than a depiction of a specific government.

Choose it if you want a short, darkly comic political satire centered on palace dynamics and a volatile ruler. If you prefer an earnest political drama focused on the mechanics of institutions, its emphasis may not be what you are looking for. Its six-episode run makes it a contained commitment rather than an open-ended series.
