- James Van Der Beek, actor and participant whose colorectal-cancer diagnosis became an important part of the program’s later public-awareness context
What happens in the special?
The participants do not simply appear for a final performance. Anderson guides them through rehearsals, confidence-building exercises and candid conversations about embarrassment, modesty, friendship and the personal impact of cancer. The process is designed to make the men step outside their comfort zones before they perform together.
The finale is a choreographed striptease before a live audience. “Bare all” is promotional language; the precise editorial description is that the men trained for and performed a revealing striptease. Emmy Award-winning choreographer Mandy Moore created the choreography. Moore is known for work including So You Think You Can Dance, La La Land and Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour.
That spectacle is the show’s attention-getting device, but the format is not presented as a conventional dance competition. Its central purpose is to use vulnerability and humor to make conversations about men’s health less uncomfortable.
The cancer-awareness mission
FOX framed the special around awareness of prostate, testicular and colorectal cancer, with an emphasis on testing, research and the importance of talking about symptoms and screening. The program’s message is particularly aimed at reducing the reluctance some men feel about seeking medical advice.

Screening guidance should not be inferred from a television special. Personal risk, symptoms, family history and previous test results can change what a person should do, so screening decisions belong with a qualified health professional. For general background, the Prostate Cancer Foundation says men without additional risk factors should discuss prostate-cancer screening with a doctor around age 45, while Black men and men with certain family-history risks may need that conversation around age 40. A PSA blood test is commonly part of the discussion, but the appropriate approach is individualized.
For colorectal cancer, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends screening average-risk adults beginning at age 45 and continuing routinely through age 75. For adults ages 76 to 85, the decision should be individualized. The CDC similarly says that most people should begin colorectal-cancer screening soon after turning 45. Anyone with symptoms or a higher-than-average risk may need medical advice earlier rather than waiting for a routine screening milestone.
James Van Der Beek’s story and the 2026 tribute
Van Der Beek appeared in the 2024 special while battling colorectal cancer. His participation gave the program’s general men’s-health message a particularly personal dimension, but the original FOX announcement described a broader campaign covering prostate, testicular and colorectal cancer—not a program solely about his diagnosis.

In February 2026, the Colorectal Cancer Alliance announced that Van Der Beek had died at age 48 following his battle with colorectal cancer. FOX subsequently announced an encore of The Real Full Monty in his memory. The announced encore was scheduled for Wednesday, February 18, 2026, from 8:00 to 10:00 p.m. ET/PT, with FOX describing plans for an on-screen donation prompt supporting the Colorectal Cancer Alliance.
Those dates matter because the tribute is a later broadcast event, not part of the original December 2024 premiere. Current viewing and replay availability may differ from the original schedule.
Is The Real Full Monty connected to the 1997 movie?
Yes, but it is important to distinguish inspiration from identity. The FOX special was inspired by the 1997 British feature film The Full Monty and adapted from the unscripted international format that began on ITV in the United Kingdom in 2017. That format was later adapted in territories including Australia, France and the Netherlands.
The 1997 film is a scripted comedy-drama about unemployed Sheffield steelworkers who form a male striptease act. The FOX production instead follows real celebrities preparing for a charity-minded live performance. Viewers looking for the source movie should choose the original The Full Monty DVD, clearly labeled as the 1997 film—not a home-video edition of the FOX special.
It is also different from the 2023 scripted series The Full Monty, which continued the film’s fictional story. The similar names can make searches confusing:

Who produced the FOX special?
The Real Full Monty was produced by Spun Gold TV, a 53 Degrees Global company, and FOX Alternative Entertainment. Executive producers included Anderson, Dan Norris, Ashley Edens, Nick Bullen and Daniela Neumann. Edens also served as showrunner.
How many people watched it?
The Prostate Cancer Foundation’s 2025 annual-report material said the FOX special drew 1.2 million live viewers, in addition to next-day Hulu viewers. That number should be treated as a reported figure attributed to the foundation’s report, not as an independently audited ratings result unless a separate primary ratings release is available.

The program’s unusual premise creates a reason for participants to discuss subjects that can otherwise remain private. Rehearsals expose insecurity; the group dynamic creates mutual accountability; and the final performance turns the men’s discomfort into a public statement. The cancer-awareness purpose is therefore integrated into the structure rather than added as a brief message at the end.

A celebrity performance can start a conversation, but it cannot explain every screening option, diagnose symptoms or replace a clinician’s advice.
