Yes, the disc-equipped PS5 plays 4K UHD Blu-rays well. It produces a detailed HDR10 picture and can pass Dolby Atmos and DTS:X audio. Its major weakness is that it does not support Dolby Vision for UHD Blu-ray discs—a limitation that matters most if you own a Dolby Vision television and a collection of Dolby Vision discs.
The short answer
A PS5 with an optical disc drive is a capable 4K Blu-ray player, especially if you already own the console. It supports physical 4K UHD Blu-rays, HDR10 and HLG, and can pass immersive audio when configured correctly. The problem is not resolution or basic picture quality: it is the absence of Dolby Vision disc playback.
A digital-only PS5 cannot play physical Blu-rays at all. This article applies only to disc-equipped PS5 models, including the standard disc version and disc-drive slim configurations.

- 4K UHD Blu-ray playback: Disc-equipped models can play 4K discs and deliver detailed images. TechRadar’s testing describes the console’s image quality as strong.
- HDR10: This is the mandatory baseline HDR format for UHD Blu-ray and remains capable of excellent results.
- Immersive audio: The PS5 can pass Dolby Atmos and DTS:X to compatible equipment.
- Value: If you already own the console, it may be unnecessary to buy another box for occasional movie watching.
- Convenience: One device handles games, streaming apps and physical movies.
The deal-breaker: no Dolby Vision from UHD discs
Dolby Vision uses dynamic metadata to help a compatible television adjust tone mapping scene by scene or shot by shot. HDR10 uses static metadata and is more widely supported. HDR10+ is another dynamic-metadata format found on some dedicated players and displays.

When a UHD disc contains Dolby Vision, the PS5 cannot output that Dolby Vision presentation. It falls back to the disc’s HDR10 layer instead. The disc still works, and HDR10 may look excellent, but you cannot access Dolby Vision through the PS5’s UHD disc player.
This should not be confused with streaming support. Dolby Vision availability in a streaming app is separate from Dolby Vision support for physical UHD Blu-rays. The relevant limitation here is specifically disc playback.
Who will notice the difference?
Dolby Vision matters more if you have a high-end OLED, mini-LED television or projector; own many Dolby Vision UHD discs; or want automatic format switching and reference-quality movie playback. It matters less if your display is HDR10-only, your collection is mostly HDR10, your room is brightly lit, or you sit far enough away that subtle HDR differences are difficult to see.

Dolby Vision is not automatically superior in every situation. The result depends on the disc’s mastering, the television, calibration, brightness, viewing distance and the entire HDMI chain. A dedicated player adds the capability; it does not guarantee that every film will look dramatically better.
How to get Dolby Atmos working on PS5
The PS5 can deliver Atmos, but its default audio configuration may send multichannel Linear PCM instead of the intended bitstream. To check the movie-player setting:
- Insert and start the UHD Blu-ray.
- While the disc is playing, press the Options button on the DualSense controller.
- Open the disc-player settings.
- Find the audio output option and change it from Linear PCM to Bitstream.
- Set the receiver or soundbar to decode Dolby Atmos or Dolby TrueHD.
- Check the receiver or soundbar’s information display to confirm the incoming format.
Menu labels can vary with system software, region and the disc-player interface. Also verify that the disc’s selected soundtrack is the Atmos track. If the receiver shows PCM or ordinary Dolby audio, check the active movie-player setting, HDMI routing and equipment compatibility.
Atmos should not inherently sound worse because the source is a PS5 when the receiver is correctly receiving and decoding the bitstream. If your equipment does not support Atmos, Linear PCM may be the appropriate choice.

What a dedicated player adds
A dedicated deck can solve more than the Dolby Vision limitation. The Sony UBP-X800M2, for example, is listed by Sony as supporting Dolby Vision, HDR10, HLG, Dolby Atmos and DTS:X over HDMI bitstream. It also supports 3D Blu-ray, DVD-Audio, SACD, 4K upscaling, USB, Wi-Fi, LAN and dual HDMI outputs.
Dual HDMI can be particularly useful with an older AV receiver that cannot pass 4K HDR video. Video can go directly to the television while audio is sent separately to the receiver. The PS5 has only one HDMI output, so older equipment may require a less convenient connection arrangement.
A conventional remote is also better suited to chapter selection, subtitles, menus and frequent movie use. Sony’s official PS5 Media Remote adds dedicated playback buttons and compatible-TV controls, but it does not add Dolby Vision support.

Keep the PS5 if…
- You already own a disc-equipped PS5.
- Your television is HDR10-only or Dolby Vision is not important to you.
- Most of your collection is HDR10.
- You want one device for games and movies.
- You are comfortable using a controller, or only need the optional Media Remote for convenience.
- Your receiver or soundbar is receiving the correct audio format.
- You do not need 3D Blu-ray, SACD, DVD-Audio or specialist media support.
Buy a dedicated player if…
- Your display supports Dolby Vision and you own compatible UHD discs.
- You are building a serious physical-media collection.
- You want automatic Dolby Vision detection and switching.
- You need dual HDMI outputs for an older receiver.
- You prefer a conventional remote and quieter, movie-focused operation.
- You need 3D Blu-ray or additional disc formats.
- You want more specialized upscaling or picture controls.
The Sony UBP-X800M2 is one example of the type of player that addresses the PS5’s missing format support. Sony listed its MSRP as $329.99 in July 2026, but prices, stock and promotions change. The Sony UBP-X700U was also listed at $329.99 when checked, but its product page showed “Email me when available,” so availability should be verified before buying.
Panasonic’s UB420 and UB820-class players are other categories worth considering for buyers prioritizing video processing and HDR flexibility, but current prices and stock vary by market.

A Dolby Vision disc does not work in Dolby Vision on the PS5
This is a player limitation, not something an HDMI cable, setting or firmware update can fix. Replacing the PS5 with a compatible dedicated player solves only the player side; the television, receiver, switch and cable path must also support the required signal.

Confirm the disc soundtrack, change the active movie-player audio output to Bitstream, verify HDMI routing and check whether the receiver or soundbar supports Dolby TrueHD/Atmos decoding.
The TV supports Dolby Vision, but the player still outputs HDR10
On the PS5, that is expected for UHD disc playback. On a dedicated player, check the television’s enhanced HDMI setting, the receiver or switch’s pass-through capability, cable suitability and the player’s Dolby Vision setting.
Verdict
For most PS5 owners, keep using the console. It is a very good HDR10 4K Blu-ray player and can deliver Atmos when configured properly. But for a Dolby Vision home-cinema setup, the missing Dolby Vision disc support is a genuine limitation. A dedicated player is worthwhile when that format, dual-HDMI connectivity, specialist discs or a proper movie remote matter more than having everything in one box.
If you are buying a PS5 primarily as a 4K Blu-ray player, factor in this omission before deciding. It plays 4K discs; it simply does not provide the complete format support that serious Dolby Vision users may expect.
