The Pitt was the medical drama behind BGR writer Andy Meek’s January 5, 2025, recommendation of “the first must-watch Max show of the year.” That was a critic’s early-year judgment, published before the series premiered—not an objective ranking or a claim about the best show today. The reason to look closer is its focused premise: each of the first season’s 15 episodes follows one hour of a single emergency-room shift.
What is The Pitt about?
The Pitt is a medical drama set among frontline staff at a modern-day Pittsburgh hospital. Noah Wyle stars as Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch, the chief attendant in the emergency room at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital. Warner Bros. Discovery described the series as an examination of the challenges facing healthcare workers in contemporary America. Warner Bros. Discovery’s first-season announcement identifies R. Scott Gemmill as the creator and John Wells Productions as the production company, in association with Warner Bros. Television.
The first-season cast also includes Tracey Ifeachor, Patrick Ball, Supriya Ganesh, Fiona Dourif, Taylor Dearden, Isa Briones, Gerran Howell, Shabana Azeez and Katherine LaNasa. Gemmill wrote the first episode and executive-produced the series with Wyle, John Wells, Erin Jontow, Simran Baidwan and Michael Hissrich.
How does the first season’s real-time format work?
The first season has 15 episodes, and each episode represents one hour in Dr. Robby’s 15-hour shift. The structure keeps the story anchored to one demanding stretch in the emergency room, rather than following a case over weeks or moving freely between multiple time periods. It is a scripted drama, however—not documentary footage or a claim that every moment unfolds exactly as it would in a real hospital.

When did The Pitt premiere, and how were episodes released?
The series debuted on Max in the United States on January 9, 2025, with its first two episodes. One new episode followed each Thursday, concluding with the season finale on April 10. The weekly rollout meant viewers could follow the shift hour by hour over the season instead of receiving all 15 episodes at once, according to the December 2024 launch announcement.
What did “first must-watch Max show of 2025” mean?
Andy Meek used that phrase in a BGR article published January 5, four days before The Pitt premiered. It captures his recommendation at that moment in the year; it is not an official award, an objective measure of quality, or a current ranking of Max shows.

The recommendation drew on the show’s medical-drama premise and early critical response. BGR quoted Rolling Stone TV critic Alan Sepinwall calling the first season “a powerful reminder of why certain formulas are so durable, how satisfying they can still be when done well, and why we shouldn’t be so eager to throw out all of the things that have made TV TV for so long.” That is Sepinwall’s assessment as quoted by BGR, not a statement from the show’s distributor.
What later official updates add

A Warner Bros. Discovery season-conclusion announcement reported that the first 14 episodes averaged more than 10 million global viewers per episode. That is the company’s own reported measurement, limited to those episodes and the scope it specified; it should not be read as a present-day audience total.
In a December 16, 2025 announcement, Warner Bros. Discovery scheduled season two to debut on HBO Max on January 8, 2026, with 15 episodes released weekly. The same release reported that season one received 13 Emmy nominations and five wins.
