HBO Max’s official trailer, released March 8, 2025, promoted the show’s return with the line “You can’t stop this.” The season picks up five years after the first, and its official synopsis points to the central upheaval: Joel and Ellie’s shared past draws them into conflict with each other as well as a more dangerous, unpredictable world. That makes the trailer’s most consequential promise less about any single reveal than about a relationship under strain.
Spoiler note: This article discusses the trailer and official season details only. It does not reveal later plot events from the series or game.
What the official trailer confirms
The official HBO Max trailer was published on March 8, 2025. Its description announced an April 13 return on Max and included the tagline “You can’t stop this.” That line is promotional copy, not a quotation attributed to a character or a statement that explains a particular scene.
The confirmed dramatic premise comes from Sony Pictures’ official series synopsis: season 2 begins five years after season 1, and Joel and Ellie’s collective past catches up with them, drawing them into conflict with one another and a more dangerous and unpredictable world. The synopsis establishes the direction of the season, but it does not spell out a scene-by-scene plot.

Why the season signals a major shift for Joel and Ellie
The five-year gap means the story returns to Joel and Ellie after time has passed, rather than simply continuing from the first season’s ending. More important, the official synopsis places the pair in conflict with each other. Their relationship is no longer only a source of connection and survival; their shared history is now part of the pressure pushing them apart.
That is the emotional tension the trailer invites viewers to watch for. Any reading of a look, image, or edit as evidence of a particular motive is interpretation, not confirmed plot. The reliable takeaway is narrower but still substantial: the season’s conflict reaches inside the central relationship as well as out into a more dangerous world.

How the series connects to the games
The television series is based on Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us game franchise, developed for PlayStation consoles. For readers interested in the source material, The Last of Us Part II Remastered is an official PlayStation game listing. Playing it is optional: the series is its own way to follow the story, and the game is not a prerequisite for watching season 2.
Because the show adapts a game franchise, game-specific knowledge can spoil developments that the trailer and official synopsis do not disclose. The season’s announced premise can be understood without those details.

What the reported trailer-view figure means
Warner Bros. Discovery’s pressroom listing reports “158 Million Views” and describes the trailer as HBO and Max’s most-watched original trailer. The listing does not give a measurement date or counting method, so this is WBD’s reported figure—not a live total or a number that can be independently interpreted as a current count.
What viewers should take from the trailer
The trailer frames season 2 as a story about consequences: five years have passed, Joel and Ellie’s shared past is catching up with them, and the official premise explicitly puts them in conflict. The promotional line “You can’t stop this” adds urgency, but the available official details do not establish exactly what it refers to. The clearest reason to expect a different kind of season is the confirmed change in the relationship at its center.
