The biggest difference between Elin Hilderbrand’s novel and Netflix’s six-episode adaptation is the nature of Merritt’s death: in the book, Abby causes it accidentally while trying to drug someone else; in the series, Abby deliberately drugs and drowns Merritt. The show also changes the bride’s name and romantic ending, adds characters, and rewrites several family histories.
How Merritt dies—and what Abby intends
Abby is responsible for Merritt’s death in both versions, but the sequence and intent are fundamentally different.
In the novel, the death is an accident
Abby takes a sleeping pill intending to incapacitate Featherleigh Dale, Thomas’s mistress, so she will not sleep with him. Merritt accidentally takes the drug instead and dies. The police rule her death accidental and do not establish who drugged her. Greer privately works out Abby’s role but keeps what she knows to herself. Netflix’s ending explainer and Town & Country’s book-and-show comparison describe the different resolutions.
In the series, Abby kills Merritt intentionally
Abby knowingly drugs Merritt, invites her to swim, and drowns her. The series gives Abby a motive tied to the Winbury trust fund, Thomas’s debt, and Merritt’s pregnancy, rather than the book’s attempt to stop Featherleigh from sleeping with Thomas. The show names Abby as the killer and makes the death a deliberate murder, rather than a private deduction left outside the police resolution.
#1 Best Overall
Celeste becomes Amelia, and other characters change
The novel’s bride, Celeste Otis, is Amelia Sacks in the adaptation. Other renamed characters include Featherleigh Dale, who becomes Isabel Nallet; Shooter Uxley, who becomes Shooter Dival; and Chief Ed Kapenash, replaced by Chief Dan Carter. Town & Country reports that several core characterizations remain despite the name changes. It also notes that the adaptation reverses the book’s physical descriptions of Celeste and Merritt: show Amelia is dark-haired and tan, while Merritt is blonde.
Will and Detective Nikki Henry are additions
In the series, Greer and Tag have three sons: Benji, Thomas, and teenage Will. Showrunner Jenna Lamia said she wanted a younger character who could offer a perspective on the adults and support a love-interest thread. Will’s relationship with Chloe is part of that changed material.
Rank #2
The novel’s investigator, Nick Diamantopoulos, gives way to Detective Nikki Henry, a character created for the show. Netflix’s cast guide identifies Henry as the only character in the series who does not appear in Hilderbrand’s novel.
Amelia’s relationship with Shooter ends differently
In the book, Celeste has a nervous stutter that disappears when she is with Shooter; the show removes that trait. Lamia told Town & Country that this helped the series establish sympathy for Amelia within its shorter episode count.

The endings diverge more sharply. The novel closes with Celeste and Shooter preparing to elope. In the series, Amelia and Shooter kiss after the wedding is called off, but Amelia leaves for London alone, pursuing self-discovery rather than a life with him. Director Susanne Bier told Netflix Tudum that the series’ more concrete portrayal of morally compromised choices made the planned elopement arc harder to retain. As Bier put it, “In a book, you can be inside a character’s head in a way that you can’t in a television show.”
Family histories and supporting plots are rewritten
The changes extend beyond the central mystery. The novel gives Celeste’s parents, Bruce and Karen, substantial backstory: Bruce has an unspoken attraction to a man, and Karen has a private end-of-life plan. The series drops Bruce’s book backstory and instead has Karen tell Bruce and Celeste about her pills; their discovery also becomes part of the investigation.
The show adds Greer’s previously unknown brother, Roderick, and a history in which Greer worked as an escort and met Tag through him—material absent from the novel. It also changes a gift Tag intends for Merritt: a diamond bracelet in the series replaces the book’s thumb ring, and the way the gift is discovered changes. Finally, the screen version consolidates aspects of the book’s Chloe and Finn material into Chloe Carter, who becomes involved with Will.

Hilderbrand told Netflix that she had waited 24 years for one of her novels to reach the screen. She told Town & Country she approached adaptation changes with the instruction to “just make the show great”—her view of adapting the book, not an endorsement of every individual alteration. Netflix describes the series as a six-episode adaptation and the first screen adaptation of one of Hilderbrand’s novels.

The setting mattered to both Hilderbrand and Lamia: Hilderbrand said getting Nantucket right was important, and Lamia described the island as a character. Netflix reports that much of the filming took place in Chatham on Cape Cod, with some production on Nantucket; the series was not filmed entirely on the island.
Netflix reported in 2024 that the book’s publisher saw nearly a 500 percent increase in book sales after the teaser trailer debuted. The page does not define the comparison period or provide underlying sales data, so that figure is a Netflix-reported claim, not an independently verified sales measure. Netflix also reported that after the series launched, the audiobook reached No. 1 in suspense and No. 5 overall on Amazon’s best-seller rankings; those are reported chart positions, not total sales figures. Netflix’s adaptation announcement provides those figures.
