It is a focused eight-episode story built around Colin Farrell’s Oz Cobb and his pursuit of power. Whether it is a must-see depends on how much you value its atmosphere and acting against the possibility that its writing may not land as strongly.
What kind of series is The Penguin?
DC describes The Penguin as an eight-episode crime and gangster series. Its premise follows Oswald “Oz” Cobb, played by Colin Farrell, as he seeks power and control in Gotham City. The series was developed by showrunner Lauren LeFranc and continues the Batman saga begun by Matt Reeves’ The Batman. DC’s series page and HBO’s catalog both frame it as a crime story, not a standard superhero adventure.

That distinction is useful when deciding whether to watch: expect a story concerned with Gotham’s criminal world and a central character’s ambitions, rather than a steady sequence of costumed-hero action. Sky calls it an eight-part limited drama and describes it as “self-encompassing”; that is the broadcaster’s characterization, not a promise that it has no wider franchise connections. Sky’s UK page
Do you need to watch The Batman first?
The show continues the saga begun by The Batman, where Farrell also played the Penguin. That gives the series a connection to the film’s version of Gotham, but the official descriptions do not establish that a full franchise catch-up is required. If you have seen the film, you will recognize the setting and character context; if not, the premise still clearly identifies Oz and his goal.

Performances and atmosphere
TIME’s September 19, 2024 review praised the production design and acting. If immersive world-building and strong performances are high on your list, those are reasons to give the series a try. Cristin Milioti also received the Television Academy’s 2025 award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. That recognition is one notable data point, not proof that every part of the show will work for every viewer. Television Academy awards record
Writing and expectations
TIME’s review also argued that the writing did not match the prestige-TV comparisons it invited. That is one critic’s assessment, not a consensus verdict. It points to the main taste-based caveat: you may find the performances and Gotham’s atmosphere compelling even if the storytelling feels less persuasive than you hoped.

Who is The Penguin for?
- Try it if you want a dark underworld story, enjoy character-focused performances, or are interested in another chapter of the Gotham introduced in The Batman.
- Adjust your expectations if you are choosing it mainly for superhero action or unusually subtle plotting; the official genre framing is crime drama, and one prominent review specifically questioned the writing.
- Skip it for now if a grim Gotham atmosphere is not appealing. The series is rooted in that crime-world setting rather than a lighter standalone adventure.
How long is it, and where can you watch?
The series has eight episodes, according to DC and Sky, making it a contained watch rather than a sprawling multi-season commitment. Sky’s page lists Sky Atlantic, HBO Max, and NOW for UK audiences. Streaming catalogs and subscription access vary by country and can change, so check the services available in your region before setting aside time to watch.
