Gerald’s work was tied to his attempt to find a treatment for his granddaughter Maria’s incurable illness. SEGA’s official chronology adds another part of the story: Black Doom supplied DNA for Shadow in exchange for help with an invasion planned 50 years later.
Why Gerald created Shadow
Professor Gerald Robotnik was a brilliant scientist who designed the Space Colony ARK and created Shadow. SEGA describes Gerald’s research into immortality as an effort to help Maria, his granddaughter, who had an incurable illness. The goal gives Shadow’s creation a personal motive as well as a scientific one.
SEGA’s character profile foregrounds Gerald as Shadow’s creator. Its chronology adds that Black Doom provided DNA for the project. These accounts fit together: Gerald led the work, while Black Doom’s contribution connected Shadow’s origin to an agreement with a much larger consequence.
Maria, Shadow, and the ARK tragedy
Maria lived with Gerald aboard the ARK and grew close to Shadow; SEGA describes their relationship as being almost like siblings. When G.U.N. raided the station, Maria was killed. SEGA says her final words remained deeply engraved in Shadow’s heart.

The attack also changed Gerald. Grieving and consumed by anger, he arranged a revenge plan through the ARK’s systems and Shadow. G.U.N. captured and executed him after the project was frozen and concealed. Gerald had secretly prepared the plan to activate 50 years later, tying the ARK tragedy to the later crisis.
Black Doom’s role in Shadow’s origin
SEGA’s timeline says Black Doom contacted Gerald 50 years before his planned invasion of Earth and supplied DNA used in Shadow’s creation. In return, Black Doom expected Shadow’s help with the invasion. That bargain explains why Shadow’s story reaches beyond Gerald’s attempt to help Maria: he was also connected, from the beginning, to Black Doom’s plan.

Who Shadow is—and what he can do
SEGA characterizes Shadow as self-directed: he follows his own will rather than pledging himself to good or evil. He is a peer-level rival to Sonic, marked by reserve, pride, and perfectionism. That makes him more than a straightforward villain or a simple mirror of Sonic; his choices are central to how his story unfolds.
His signature abilities include Chaos Control, Chaos Blast, and Chaos Spear. SEGA describes Chaos Control as a technique that uses Chaos Emerald power to warp space-time. The official Sonic Adventure 2 page likewise says Shadow can use an Emerald to warp time and space.

SEGA’s retrospective also names Sonic Heroes and Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) among Shadow’s later appearances. It frames his continuing arc around fate, memory, and the burdens of his past.
For the initial story and its central relationships, start with Sonic Adventure 2. Shadow the Hedgehog takes up the question of his identity, while Sonic X Shadow Generations returns to the ARK and its key figures. This is a story-order guide, not a statement about current platform availability.
