Spoilers for the Season 2 finale, “XV.” The finale gives nearly everyone a win with a cost attached: Dan Chase survives, Zoe saves him, and Julian kills Pavlovich, but danger and unfinished business remain. The clearest exception is Emily—now Parwana Hamzad—who survives, claims her identity and takes charge of the next move. That is a meaningful victory, even as she asks Chase to help recover Harold Harper.

What happens in The Old Man Season 2 finale?

“XV” turns a race to save Dan Chase into a series of partial victories and new problems. Chase has been poisoned, but Zoe finds him and gives him an antidote. Julian kills Pavlovich, creating an opening to reach Chase; Zoe uses that opportunity to pursue Chase herself rather than stay with Julian.

Elsewhere, Emily survives the assault at Hamzad’s compound and escapes captivity. She has embraced the name Parwana Hamzad. The reunion with Chase is real, but it does not restore the old arrangement between them: Harper has disappeared after Marion’s maneuver, and Parwana tells Chase to help get him back.

Who is the one character the finale doesn’t let down?

Parwana Hamzad, formerly Emily and Angela

Parwana is the strongest case for the finale’s exception. She survives, comes into a fuller understanding of who she is, and acts with authority in the Afghan political conflict. Instead of being only the person other characters must rescue, she reunites with Chase and directs him toward the next task: finding Harper.

Her victory is about identity and agency, not a painless ending. The reunion is immediately shadowed by Harper’s disappearance, and her new authority comes with a dangerous crisis to manage. The finale lets her move forward on her own terms while making clear that she has not escaped the conflict.

Showrunner Jonathan E. Steinberg described the series’ family story as being about “parenting an adult child and being an adult child and dealing with parents who are aging.” He also described the shift as “realizing your child has real authority and agency and is not compelled to listen you anymore.” Those ideas land in the final exchange: Parwana is no longer simply the daughter Chase must find or protect. She is the one telling him what must happen next.

What happens to Dan Chase?

Chase survives the poisoning because Zoe gets him an antidote and brings him to safety. That is a concrete rescue, not a cure for the danger around him. His reunion with Parwana gives the finale an emotional reprieve, but her request to recover Harper quickly turns that reprieve into another mission.

Alia Shawkat described the reunion as beginning with “them seeing each other after he thought she was dead.” The scene matters because Chase believed he had lost Emily; its tenderness does not erase the threats that follow it.

Is Emily alive?

Yes. Emily survives the attack at Hamzad’s compound, escapes captivity and embraces the name Parwana Hamzad. She is alive when she reunites with Chase, and she has more agency in the story than the earlier rescue dynamic allowed.

What happened to Harold Harper?

Harper is gone by the end of the episode. Marion has him removed, leaving him absent and vulnerable while Parwana and Chase prepare to recover him. The finale establishes Marion’s maneuver, but not its lasting outcome: whether she can hold control or what happens to Harper remains unresolved at the season break.

Why did Marion take Harper?

The finale presents Marion’s action as a maneuver that puts her in control of Harper, but the available account of the episode does not establish a settled long-term motive or outcome. It is safer to read the disappearance as a new source of leverage and danger than to treat it as proof that Marion has won.

Does Zoe save Chase, and what happens to Julian?

Zoe’s rescue is a genuine win

Zoe locates Chase and saves him with the antidote. She makes an active choice to pursue him rather than remain with Julian. That gives her a real success in the finale; it does not resolve the dangerous operations she remains tied to or establish that she is safe.

Julian’s victory is tactical

Julian kills Pavlovich and helps open a path toward Chase. But Zoe leaves to find Chase herself, so Julian’s accomplishment does not settle his personal story. The finale gives him a decisive action, not a secure resolution.

What does the ending mean for the characters?

The ending’s pattern is victory followed by obligation. Chase is alive but still exposed to danger. Zoe saves him but does not end the wider threat. Julian gets Pavlovich out of the way but is left behind by Zoe. Harper’s disappearance gives Parwana and Chase a new rescue mission. Parwana’s outcome is different: she claims a name and authority, then uses both to shape what happens next.

That is why “lets down all of its characters” works as a critical verdict only with a qualification. It is not a plot fact, and it does not mean every character loses. The finale gives several characters meaningful achievements, but most are immediately burdened by danger or uncertainty. Parwana’s agency is the clearest exception—not because she gets a happy ending, but because she gets to direct the next chapter.

How to read the finale’s critical context

TV Guide’s review by Liam Mathews is a limited point of comparison, not a review of “XV.” Published September 5, 2024, before Season 2 premiered, it praised Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow together and the season’s visual craft while criticizing its writing and characterization. Mathews said he had seen five of the season’s eight episodes, so the review cannot establish a finale-specific judgment.

For release context, Disney’s September 12, 2024 announcement described Season 2 as Chase and Harper joining forces to recover the woman they both call their daughter. It listed an FX premiere that evening and Hulu streaming the following day in the United States; that dated announcement does not establish current or regional availability. FX’s selected-scenes page lists clips from the series, but it is not a transcript or complete account of the finale.
