The short answer: the original cast took very different paths after the eight Harry Potter films. Daniel Radcliffe moved into eclectic film, stage, comedy and television work; Emma Watson became less publicly visible professionally; Rupert Grint worked selectively; and Tom Felton made the most direct return to his old role with a 2025–26 Broadway engagement as Draco Malfoy.

Bonnie Wright, Matthew Lewis and Evanna Lynch also continued beyond the franchise, while established performers such as Gary Oldman, Jason Isaacs, Helena Bonham Carter, Imelda Staunton and Warwick Davis built on careers that already extended far beyond Hogwarts.

When Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone arrived in 2001, its young cast became famous together. The eight-film series then followed Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint from childhood into adulthood, while actors including Tom Felton, Bonnie Wright, Matthew Lewis and Evanna Lynch grew up alongside them on screen.

#1 Best Overall

This is a look at the principal performers introduced in the first film and the most recognizable recurring members of the ensemble—not every credited actor. The films adapted seven novels into eight movies, and the original trio remained the series’ central continuity thread.

The original cast at a glance

Actor Harry Potter role Then and now
Daniel Radcliffe Harry Potter Moved into theatre, independent films, comedy and television; in 2026, he is appearing in NBC’s The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins.
Emma Watson Hermione Granger Built a major film career after the franchise and has maintained a lower-profile public and acting presence in recent years.
Rupert Grint Ron Weasley Has worked selectively across television, film, voice work and production; he is listed in the 2026 film Nightborn.
Tom Felton Draco Malfoy Continued in film, television, music and theatre, including a 2025–26 Broadway return as Draco.
Bonnie Wright Ginny Weasley Expanded beyond acting into directing, writing and environmental advocacy.
Matthew Lewis Neville Longbottom Continued working across television, film and theatre after Neville’s striking character arc.
Evanna Lynch Luna Lovegood Continued acting while becoming prominent for writing and advocacy, including animal-welfare and ethical-consumption work.

Daniel Radcliffe: Harry Potter

Daniel Radcliffe was cast as Harry at age 11 and became the public face of the franchise. Because the films occupied so much of his childhood and adolescence, his later choices have often been viewed as an effort to avoid simply repeating the same blockbuster role. More precisely, his career shows a broadening from franchise fantasy into theatre, independent film, deliberately eccentric comedy and television.

After Potter, Radcliffe appeared in stage productions and films such as The Woman in Black, Kill Your Darlings, Swiss Army Man and Escape from Pretoria. He also played musician and comedian “Weird Al” Yankovic in Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. Those projects placed him in very different genres and performance styles, but no single role can fairly be described as the one that permanently separated him from Harry.

His 2026 television work provides the most current anchor point. NBC describes Radcliffe as part of the cast of the comedy The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins, starring alongside Tracy Morgan, with Radcliffe playing filmmaker Arthur Tobin. NBC has also renewed the series for a second season in the 2026–27 schedule. That status is current to this update and should be checked against NBC’s latest listings.

Emma Watson: Hermione Granger

Emma Watson played Hermione in all eight films and emerged as one of the franchise’s most prominent young stars. Her post-Potter screen work includes The Perks of Being a Wallflower, The Bling Ring, Noah, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and Little Women.

Watson’s public identity has also included advocacy and fashion-related work. Compared with Radcliffe and Felton, she has maintained a lower-profile public and acting presence in recent years. That is a description of visibility, not proof that she has stopped acting: there is no sound basis here for calling her retired or assigning her an unannounced future project.

Rupert Grint: Ron Weasley

Rupert Grint’s Ron was the friend whose humor, loyalty and insecurity balanced Harry and Hermione. After the franchise, Grint followed a more selective and intermittent path rather than maintaining the pace of a conventional blockbuster career.

His later work includes the television series Sick Note, Servant and Cabinet of Curiosities>, along with film, stage, voice and production work. In 2026, available listings identify him as Jon in Nightborn, a Finnish folk-horror film directed by Hanna Bergholm and co-starring Seidi Haarla. The film is listed for release in 2026, so availability and dates may vary by territory.

Tom Felton: Draco Malfoy’s full-circle return

Tom Felton played Draco Malfoy in all eight films, turning Harry’s school rival into one of the series’ most recognizable supporting characters. He continued working in film, television, music and theatre after the franchise.

His most direct return to the role came on Broadway. The official Harry Potter and the Cursed Child production listing identifies Felton as a replacement performer playing Draco Malfoy at New York’s Lyric Theatre. His engagement began November 11, 2025, and has been extended through November 1, 2026.

That is a genuine reprise of his original film character, but it is a stage engagement—not a new Harry Potter movie and not a reunion of the original trio. Felton’s return is therefore the clearest example of an original young cast member stepping back into the exact role that made him famous.

Bonnie Wright, Matthew Lewis and Evanna Lynch

Bonnie Wright: Ginny Weasley

Bonnie Wright played Ginny Weasley, who develops from Ron’s younger sister into an important member of the story’s young resistance. Wright continued acting after the films but also moved into directing and writing. She has additionally been associated with environmental advocacy. Current coverage should avoid attaching a specific new acting project to her without a separately verified announcement.

Matthew Lewis: Neville Longbottom

Matthew Lewis’s Neville became one of the franchise’s most discussed character arcs. The awkward, timid presentation of Neville in the early films eventually gives way to a more courageous and capable figure, creating a sharp contrast with the adult roles Lewis later took across television, film and theatre.

That contrast is a change in screen persona, not a claim about Lewis’s private personality. The important career point is that he continued building work outside the fantasy franchise rather than remaining defined solely by Neville.

Evanna Lynch: Luna Lovegood

Evanna Lynch played Luna Lovegood, whose unusual perspective and emotional steadiness made her a favorite among the younger characters. Lynch continued acting after the series and became increasingly visible as a writer and advocate. Her public work has included animal welfare and ethical consumption. As with Wright, it is better to describe her post-Potter career broadly than to invent a current acting project or exaggerate the frequency of her screen appearances.

The established adult cast who kept working

The older performers were not newcomers being launched by Harry Potter; most already had substantial careers in film, television, theatre or voice work. The franchise became an important part of their legacies, but it was not the whole of their professional lives.

  • Jason Isaacs, who played Lucius Malfoy, continued a substantial film, television and voice career.
  • Gary Oldman, Sirius Black in the films, remained a major screen actor and later starred in the television series Slow Horses.
  • Helena Bonham Carter, who played Bellatrix Lestrange, continued prominent film and television work.
  • Imelda Staunton, Dolores Umbridge, remained active in film, television and theatre.
  • Warwick Davis, who played Professor Filius Flitwick, continued acting and presenting and remained connected to the wider Wizarding World through later franchise activity.

The distinction matters: for these performers, “after Harry Potter” describes another chapter in an already established career, not the beginning of one.

Licensed merchandise for collectors

Merchandise is optional rather than part of understanding the cast, but fans revisiting the films may encounter licensed products through the official Harry Potter Shop, including replica wands, Hedwig items, house scarves, Chocolate Frog packaging and gift sets. Collectors and families may also be interested in licensed LEGO Harry Potter sets. Product ranges, licensing and regional availability change, so treat these as shopping categories rather than permanent recommendations.

The performers who have died

Several major members of the original ensemble have died. Their Harry Potter roles remain important, but each had a much wider body of work.

Richard Harris: the first Albus Dumbledore

Richard Harris played Albus Dumbledore in the first two films. He died on October 25, 2002. Michael Gambon then assumed the role beginning with Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and played Dumbledore in the remaining six movies.

That is why “the original Dumbledore” needs clarification: Harris was the first film Dumbledore, while Gambon was the Dumbledore of the final six installments.

Alan Rickman: Severus Snape

Alan Rickman played Severus Snape across the film series and died on January 14, 2016. His controlled, layered performance became one of the franchise’s defining adult portrayals. Discussion of what the performance achieved on screen should be kept separate from claims about Rickman’s private opinions or behind-the-scenes behavior unless those claims are directly sourced.

Robbie Coltrane: Rubeus Hagrid

Robbie Coltrane brought warmth and physical presence to Hagrid and appeared throughout the films. He died on October 14, 2022. As the British Film Institute’s obituary makes clear, Hagrid was only one part of a much broader career that included comedy and drama, notably the television series Cracker and the James Bond films.

Michael Gambon: Albus Dumbledore

Michael Gambon became Dumbledore after Harris’s death and played the headmaster from the third film through the end of the series. Gambon died on September 27, 2023. His wider career included acclaimed stage, television and film work, including The Singing Detective and other major British productions.

Maggie Smith: Minerva McGonagall

Maggie Smith played Professor Minerva McGonagall, combining strict authority with dry humor and visible loyalty to her students. She died on September 27, 2024, aged 89. Her career long predated Harry Potter and included major theatre, film and television work, including Downton Abbey and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.

Was the original cast reunited?

Not in the sense that every original performer returned together. The 2022 Return to Hogwarts special brought selected cast members back for a retrospective, but it was not a complete reunion of everyone credited in the films. Likewise, Tom Felton’s Broadway appearance is a return to Draco Malfoy in a stage production, not a reunion of Radcliffe, Watson, Grint and Felton.

The original film cast should also be kept separate from the cast of the forthcoming HBO television adaptation. A new adaptation has its own performers; it does not replace the actors who defined the eight original movies.

Best Value

The lasting difference between then and now

The most interesting part of the original cast’s story is not that everyone followed the same path. Radcliffe pursued eclectic work across stage, independent film, comedy and television. Watson’s screen presence became more selective and lower-profile. Grint worked intermittently across television, film and production. Felton made the most literal return to his first major character, while Wright, Lewis and Lynch developed careers that also included directing, writing or advocacy.

The veteran actors continued careers that already extended far beyond Hogwarts, and the performers who have died left legacies larger than their respective wizarding roles. Together, those different trajectories explain why the cast can still feel like a single generation on screen even though its members’ adult careers have taken very different directions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is considered part of the original Harry Potter cast?

The principal original cast means the performers introduced in the 2001 film Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, along with the best-known recurring young and adult ensemble members. It does not mean every actor with a credit in the eight films.

Did the entire original Harry Potter cast reunite?

No. The 2022 Return to Hogwarts special reunited selected performers, not every member of the original ensemble. Tom Felton’s 2025–26 Broadway engagement is a solo return to Draco Malfoy, not a reunion of the original trio.

Who played the original Dumbledore?

Richard Harris played Dumbledore in the first two films. After Harris died in 2002, Michael Gambon played Dumbledore in the remaining six movies, beginning with Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

Is Tom Felton playing Draco Malfoy again?

As of this article’s August 12, 2026 update, Tom Felton is appearing as Draco Malfoy in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway at the Lyric Theatre, in an engagement listed from November 11, 2025, through November 1, 2026. It is a stage production, not a new film.

The Bottom Line

The original Harry Potter cast did not move into one shared post-franchise future: Radcliffe chose eclectic work, Watson became more private professionally, Grint worked selectively, Felton returned to Draco on Broadway, and the wider ensemble continued across acting, writing, directing and advocacy. Several veteran performers have died, but their careers—and the films themselves—remain much larger than a single Hogwarts role.
