The 1980s computer game at the center of the film announcement is The Oregon Trail. The Hollywood Reporter said on October 25, 2024, that Apple had the feature project in early development, with Will Speck and Josh Gordon attached to direct and produce and the Lucas Bros. and Max Reisman set to write. The report also said the film would include original musical numbers. Those are development details reported in 2024—not confirmation of the project’s status today.
What is the Oregon Trail film project?
It is a reported feature-film adaptation of The Oregon Trail, the educational computer game in which players guide a wagon party westward. In its October 25, 2024 report, The Hollywood Reporter described the project as an action-comedy in early development at Apple.
The trade report named Will Speck and Josh Gordon as directors and producers, and the Lucas Bros. and Max Reisman as writers. It also reported that the film would feature original musical numbers. No direct statement from Apple or the attached filmmakers about the project was verified in the cited coverage, so these details should be understood as reported plans rather than a completed production announcement.
When will the movie come out, and who will star?
The cited October 2024 report did not establish a release date, cast, or confirmed distribution destination. It also does not establish whether the project remains in development now. Without a newer official announcement or fresh reporting, there is no supported date or cast to give.

Why is it called an 80s computer game?
The shorthand points to a notable Apple II version, not the beginning of the franchise. Apple’s App Store history says The Oregon Trail began in 1971, while Apple separately identifies the Apple II classic as a 1985 version. Those are different milestones: the game originated before the 1980s, but a well-known computer edition belongs to that decade.
Apple’s feature, “Journey Down the New Oregon Trail!”, also describes the game’s educational history and later reinterpretation. It quotes original creator Don Rawitsch reflecting on whose perspective a new version might explore: “I would create the Native American version—what was it like to be like on the other side of the wall, so to speak.” Apple’s article attributes that reflection to Rawitsch in 2017.

Is the modern Oregon Trail game the movie?
No. Apple lists a modern, officially licensed Gameloft game for Apple devices; it is a separate digital game, not the feature film. Apple’s listing credits the licensing to HarperCollins Productions and describes updated gameplay. In its “Return to The Oregon Trail” feature, Apple identifies the 1985 Apple II edition as a classic and quotes Gameloft Brisbane creative director Jarrad Trudgen: “We wanted to make something that could grow with the people who played it when they were kids—something for The Oregon Trail generation.”

No. Organ Trail is a separate 2023 horror film. The similar names can cause confusion, but the Apple project reported in 2024 is based on The Oregon Trail.
