The Onion was named the winning bidder for assets of InfoWars parent Free Speech Systems in a November 2024 bankruptcy auction, but the bankruptcy judge rejected the sale the following month. The Onion did not complete that purchase. A separate 2026 proposal to license InfoWars intellectual property was blocked by Texas courts; the latest located status report, dated September 9, 2026, said those blocking orders remained in place.
What happened in the 2024 auction?
Free Speech Systems, the parent company of InfoWars, was in bankruptcy proceedings connected to efforts to satisfy defamation judgments against Alex Jones. In November 2024, The Onion was identified as the winning bidder for company assets in an auction.
That result did not transfer the assets. In December 2024, the bankruptcy judge rejected the sale, citing concerns that the auction process had not produced the best possible bids. The court did not approve a sale to The Onion, so “won the auction” describes the bid outcome—not a completed acquisition.
How was the 2026 proposal different?
In April 2026, War Is Over LLC, an Onion affiliate, proposed a temporary license for InfoWars intellectual property from a court-appointed receiver. This was a separate route from the 2024 bankruptcy auction: it proposed permission to use specified intellectual property, rather than a purchase of Free Speech Systems assets.

Bloomberg Law reported proposed terms of $81,000 per month for six months. Those were terms of the proposed license, not evidence that payments were made or that an operating arrangement took effect.
Why was the proposed license blocked?
On April 30, 2026, a Texas appellate court temporarily blocked the proposed transfer while litigation continued. On September 9, the Texas Supreme Court declined to dissolve the lower-court orders that prevented the receiver from assuming control and licensing the intellectual property to The Onion.
That decision left the blocking orders in place; it did not turn the proposal into a completed license. The latest located report on the license litigation is dated September 9, 2026. It does not establish whether a later court order, settlement, receiver action, or operational change occurred before October 8, 2026.
How the two routes compare
| Route | What was proposed | Process | Reported outcome |
|---|---|---|---|
| November 2024 auction | Purchase of assets of Free Speech Systems, InfoWars’ parent company | Bankruptcy auction | The Onion was named winning bidder; the bankruptcy judge rejected the sale in December 2024. |
| April 2026 license proposal | Temporary use of InfoWars intellectual property through a receiver | Receiver proceeding subject to Texas court orders | A Texas appellate court blocked the proposed transfer; on September 9, 2026, the Texas Supreme Court declined to dissolve the blocking orders. |
What the separate judgment appeals do—and do not—decide
The efforts to collect on defamation judgments provide the broader context for the asset proceedings, but appeals over those judgments are not rulings on whether The Onion can use InfoWars intellectual property. The Associated Press reported that a separate Texas appeals decision in August 2026 reduced a Texas defamation judgment against Jones, while a Connecticut judgment remained. That development does not resolve the license proposal.
Rank #3
Likewise, a description of The Onion’s proposed use in a filing by Jones’s lawyers is a litigating party’s characterization, not a court finding. The relevant status for the license is the court action: the proposed transfer was blocked, and the Texas Supreme Court left those orders in place on September 9, 2026.
