The Revenant is the highest-grossing Western in the current genre chart, with a displayed worldwide total of $533.0 million. The ranking below follows What’s After the Movie’s Western classification and reported lifetime worldwide grosses; it is not adjusted for inflation, and some entries or totals are disputed by other sources.
Highest-grossing Western films: the current top 10
What’s After the Movie’s chart lists the following films by reported lifetime worldwide theatrical gross. Figures below reproduce the chart’s rounded displayed totals, accessed in 2026; they are not a harmonized consensus across box-office databases.

| 10 | The Horse Whisperer | 1998 | $186.9 million |
*The chart’s Detective Chinatown 1900 total and genre assignment conflict with The Numbers’ listing, which gives the film a worldwide gross of $454,956,002 and classifies it as comedy / historical fiction. For Django Unchained, The Numbers reports $449,841,566 worldwide, while the chart shows $426.1 million. These figures are source-specific and should not be treated as interchangeable.
What the ranking measures—and what it does not
What’s After the Movie says its chart ranks lifetime worldwide gross in US dollars, groups films by release date, and does not adjust for inflation. It also excludes records it considers misattributed and records listing seven or more genres. This is that publisher’s method, not a universal definition of a Western. Its chart reports US & Canada and rest-of-world splits in addition to worldwide totals.

As a result, this is a ranking of reported box-office dollars, not ticket sales, profitability, or audience size. An older movie can have drawn more viewers than a newer one while earning fewer nominal dollars; an inflation-adjusted or admissions-based ranking would answer a different question.
Why some totals and placements are disputed
Detective Chinatown 1900 is the clearest classification conflict
The current chart places the 2025 film second at $500.3 million. The Numbers lists $454,956,002 worldwide and labels it comedy / historical fiction. The sources do not resolve either the gross discrepancy or whether it belongs in a Western ranking, so its second-place position applies specifically to What’s After the Movie’s chart.

Django Unchained has different reported totals
The chart displays $426.1 million. The Numbers gives $449,841,566, and Guinness World Records recorded $449,948,323 as of 15 January 2017. Guinness’s dated entry says Django Unchained took the record from Dances with Wolves, whose gross was $424.2 million by 30 June 1991. A record entry from 2017 is not a current all-film ranking, and the totals from different providers should remain attributed to their sources.
The Revenant is close across the cited sources
The chart rounds its total to $533.0 million; The Numbers reports $533,357,197 worldwide. The Numbers separately estimates $18,930,087 in DVD sales and $21,042,664 in Blu-ray sales. Those disc estimates are not theatrical box office and are not included in the chart’s ranking.

How broad is “Western” in this chart?
The list is broader than a narrow idea of frontier dramas. It includes Back to the Future Part III, a science-fiction comedy sequel, as well as Detective Chinatown 1900, which The Numbers categorizes as comedy / historical fiction. The rankings therefore reflect the chart publisher’s genre taxonomy as well as box-office reporting.
For context, What’s After the Movie reports that 331 Western films with worldwide grosses appear in its chart, with a combined reported total of $8.2 billion. It counts 26 films above $100 million and none above $1 billion; its reported top ten total is $3.3 billion. The chart attributes 51% of reported all-time gross to the US & Canada and says five 1990 releases earned $735.6 million, led by Dances with Wolves. These are the chart publisher’s figures, not independently verified industry totals.
