Spoilers for all of Season 1, including the finale. The key point going into Season 2 is that Emily Chase—also known as Angela Adams—is in danger, and Dan Chase and Harold Harper must work together to get her back. Season 1 ends with Emily held by FBI agent Raymond Waters and assassin Julian Carson; FX frames Season 2 around her kidnapping by Afghan tribal leader Faraz Hamzad.
Who are Dan Chase and Harold Harper?
Dan Chase (Jeff Bridges) is a former CIA agent who has spent years living off the grid. When his past catches up with him, his carefully secluded life gives way to a dangerous flight. Harold Harper (John Lithgow), a former FBI Assistant Director, is drawn into the pursuit. Their connection is not simply professional: the two men share a complicated personal history that shapes the conflict. TIME’s overview of the series describes Chase’s former CIA life and Harper’s role in the story.
Why does Emily matter to both men?
Emily Chase, who is also known as Angela Adams, is more than Harper’s protégé. Her ties to Chase and Harper’s past make her the emotional link between them—and the person whose safety drives the next season. Remembering that connection helps explain why the men’s uneasy history does not prevent them from pursuing the same immediate goal.
How does Season 1 end?
The finale leaves Emily in immediate danger. In TVLine’s recap of the Season 1 finale, she is being held by Raymond Waters, an FBI underling, and assassin Julian Carson, while Harper tries to retrieve her. That cliffhanger—not a clean resolution between Chase and Harper—is the point to carry into Season 2.

What is the Season 2 setup?
FX describes the next chapter as Chase and Harper setting out to recover Emily after Faraz Hamzad, an Afghan tribal leader, kidnaps her. The official FX series page supplies the direct bridge between seasons: Emily’s peril forces Chase and Harper into a joint rescue effort, even though their past remains complicated. The finale’s immediate captors and the broader Season 2 kidnapping setup are distinct parts of the transition; the available recap and official synopsis do not establish every detail of how events connect.
Is The Old Man based on a book?
Yes. The television series is based on Thomas Perry’s 2017 novel, also titled The Old Man, as noted in TIME’s review. The novel is an option for readers who want to explore the source story, not an episode-by-episode guide to the show or a substitute for its seven-episode first-season finale.
