Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey opened theatrically on July 17, 2026. Universal’s featured cast list names seven actors; a post-release Associated Press guide confirms a larger ensemble and identifies their roles.
Universal’s featured cast
Universal Pictures Canada lists these seven performers on the film’s featured cast page:

- Matt Damon
- Tom Holland
- Anne Hathaway
- Robert Pattinson
- Lupita Nyong’o
- Zendaya
- Charlize Theron
This is the studio’s featured billing, not a claim that the film has only seven cast members. The film is a mythic action epic written and directed by Christopher Nolan, produced by Emma Thomas and Nolan for Syncopy. Universal Pictures Canada’s film page lists it as now playing.

The central characters and their place in the story
Odysseus, Penelope and Telemachus
Odysseus is the king of Ithaca, and his journey home—and reunion with his wife, Penelope, and son, Telemachus—forms the story’s central arc. In Ithaca, Penelope has waited while suitors occupy the palace. Telemachus searches for information about his missing father.

Antinous and Athena
Robert Pattinson plays Antinous, the principal antagonist on the Ithaca side of the film’s story. Zendaya plays Athena, the goddess associated in the AP guide with craft, warfare and wisdom.
The other mythic figures
Charlize Theron plays Calypso, a nymph Odysseus encounters on his journey. Lupita Nyong’o has two roles: Helen and Clytemnestra. The remaining pairings in the table identify figures from the wider world of the epic, including Circe, Menelaus and Agamemnon.

These descriptions identify the film’s characters and the classical context provided by AP; adaptations can interpret Homer’s poem differently. A print edition of Homer’s The Odyssey can be a companion for readers who want to explore the source poem, but reading it is not a prerequisite for watching the film.
