Spoilers for all of The Night Agent Season 2.
Peter Sutherland stops the KX attack, but he does not walk away from the Season 2 finale, “Buyer’s Remorse,” with a clean victory. He is arrested for stealing classified United Nations material, separates from Rose to keep her out of danger, and is then given a new covert assignment: get close to Jacob Monroe and uncover Monroe’s relationship with President-elect Governor Hagan.
That is the finale’s central turn. Peter saves New York operationally while becoming more entangled in the political conspiracy he is trying to expose. His next mission will require him to appear useful to Monroe, the man who manipulated him into stealing the very information that helped clear Hagan’s path to the presidency.

What happens in The Night Agent Season 2’s finale?
Peter, Rose, Catherine Weaver, Noor Taheri, and several law-enforcement teams converge on the United Nations after tracing the KX plot. The initial threat is an attack on the UN, but the operation moves to the nearby fictional Wynnfield Hotel when Markus and his collaborators attempt to deploy the weapon there.
Peter and Rose work together during the final confrontation. They eliminate Markus and shut down the KX device before the attack can spread through Manhattan. The immediate bioterror threat is therefore contained: General Viktor Bala’s network is disrupted, the Foxglove-linked weapon does not produce the intended mass-casualty event, and New York is saved.
But the political crisis behind the attack remains unresolved. The information connected to Project Foxglove is still valuable, and Monroe has already used it to influence the presidential race. Stopping Markus does not expose every person benefiting from the conspiracy. It only prevents the most visible act of violence.
What was Project Foxglove, and what is KX?
Project Foxglove was a discontinued CIA program created to develop chemical weapons and corresponding antidotes. KX was one of the weapons produced through that program. The project’s existence is politically explosive because it provides evidence of America’s role in creating the technology later used by General Bala’s network.

Bala’s son, Tomás, and his nephew, Markus, then pursued a retaliatory terrorist attack using confidential information related to the Iranian Mission.
The distinction between the weapon’s origin and the season’s immediate villains matters:
- Foxglove explains where the chemical weapon and its antidote came from, as well as the government’s potential liability.
- General Bala’s network carries the grievance and retaliation forward after Bala’s imprisonment.
- Tomás and Markus represent the direct terrorist threat Peter must stop.
- Monroe exploits the crisis and the information surrounding it. He is not presented as the person personally carrying out the hotel attack.
Even after KX is contained, Foxglove remains dangerous because it can be used as evidence, blackmail, and political leverage. The weapon is neutralized; the secret is not.
Who was the mole?
Peter begins the season suspecting that a mole inside Night Action exposed his Bangkok operation and contributed to the death of his partner, Alice. The finale complicates that theory rather than delivering a simple reveal of one traitor sitting inside Night Action.
The information trail reaches senior intelligence figures and the White House. Monroe operates as an intelligence broker who can connect people, classified material, private interests, and covert operations across institutional boundaries. In that sense, Alice’s death is not merely evidence that one Night Action employee betrayed Peter. It is an early symptom of a larger system in which confidential information is traded and weaponized.
Rank #2
This is why the finale feels broader than a conventional “find the mole” resolution. Peter is confronting a network of influence rather than a single compromised colleague. The danger comes from the people able to move secrets between government agencies, intelligence circles, and political campaigns.
How did Jacob Monroe manipulate Peter?
Monroe’s leverage over Peter is Rose. Peter needs Monroe’s help locating her and identifying the people behind the KX operation. Monroe agrees to provide information, but only if Peter retrieves a sensitive file from the United Nations.
Peter accepts the bargain and breaks into the UN. The exchange appears to be a rescue deal, but Monroe has designed it as something much more consequential. The file contains a recording linking presidential candidate Patrick Knox to Project Foxglove. Once that material can be used against Knox, Governor Hagan’s route to the presidency becomes much easier.

His intentions are protective, but the action has political consequences that he does not fully control. Monroe turns Peter’s government access, tactical ability, and loyalty into tools for reshaping the presidential race.
That is the finale’s most important irony: Peter’s decision is not meaningless or foolish—his need to find Rose is real, and the information helps him reach the people holding her—but Monroe has made sure that Peter’s success also advances Monroe’s agenda.
Why is Peter arrested?
Peter is arrested because he infiltrated the United Nations and stole classified documents for Monroe. His motives do not erase the legal and professional seriousness of the act. Night Action cannot simply ignore a breach of that scale because the stolen material eventually helped Peter intervene in the KX crisis.
The arrest also reinforces the season’s moral argument. Peter can do the right thing for Rose and still cross a line. He can help stop a terrorist attack and still be compromised by the way he obtained the information needed to do it.

Do Peter and Rose break up?
Yes, Peter and Rose part at the end of Season 2. The scene is not presented as a disappearance of feeling. It is a sacrifice Peter believes he has to make because his enemies can use Rose to reach him.

Unable to return to a visible state, Brady is enlisted as the ultimate British secret agent. In Season 2, the Invisible Man becomes involved in the dangerous the world of international intrigue. Peter tells Rose not to look for him again. He believes that as long as she remains connected to him, she can be targeted whenever his work becomes dangerous. Rose accepts that she cannot continue waiting for Peter to call or appear while being pulled into threats she never chose.
The separation also reflects the gap between their lives. Rose is a civilian; Peter’s new identity is increasingly defined by covert operations, compromised loyalties, and people willing to hurt anyone close to him. Rose did not sign up to become part of Night Action, and Peter understands that keeping her close may put her in permanent danger.
The finale does not establish that they have stopped loving each other. It establishes that Peter believes love has made Rose a vulnerability his enemies can exploit. Whether they can reunite depends on whether Peter can complete his new mission without becoming too compromised to return to an ordinary life.
What is Monroe’s relationship with Hagan?
Catherine and Peter infer that Monroe engineered circumstances that make Governor Hagan’s presidency likely. Monroe helped expose or exploit the Foxglove scandal involving Patrick Knox, Hagan’s opponent. The apparent result is a president who owes part of his political position to Monroe’s manipulation.
That does not necessarily mean Hagan is Monroe’s obedient puppet. Their tense exchange suggests that Hagan may believe he is the person using Monroe. The unresolved question is therefore not simply, “Does Monroe control Hagan?” It is, “Which powerful man expects to control the other once Hagan occupies the White House?”
This uncertainty makes Hagan more interesting than a straightforward corrupt politician. He may be an ally, a beneficiary, a rival, or someone who intends to discard Monroe after taking office. Monroe’s influence is obvious, but his ultimate control is not proven.
What is Peter’s new path?
Catherine assigns Peter to get close to Monroe and determine the precise nature of Monroe’s relationship with Hagan. Peter must appear available and useful when Monroe contacts him, while secretly investigating the network he has entered.
This is different from Peter’s earlier role as an operative responding to immediate threats. He will now have to maintain a long-term cover relationship with a powerful intelligence broker. His objectives may require him to accept assignments from Monroe, conceal what he knows from Monroe, and decide how far he can go without becoming an instrument of Monroe’s political agenda.
The assignment also echoes Peter’s relationship with his father, Peter Sutherland Sr., an FBI traitor whose legacy has made Peter unusually sensitive to the boundary between loyalty and betrayal. Peter wants to protect the institutions he serves, but the new mission requires him to look as if he is betraying them.

That is why the finale’s title, “Buyer’s Remorse,” fits Peter’s position. He made a bargain to save Rose, but the cost was far greater than he understood. He now has to use the consequences of that bargain as cover for a mission that may be the only way to expose Monroe and Hagan.
What does the ending set up for a possible Season 3?
- Does Monroe control Hagan? Monroe helped create the conditions for Hagan’s rise, but Hagan may intend to reverse the power relationship once he becomes president.
- Can Peter stay undercover? Peter must get close enough to Monroe to learn the truth without becoming dependent on Monroe or normalizing his methods.
- What happens to the Foxglove evidence? The KX weapon is contained, but the evidence of the CIA program and America’s connection to it remains politically dangerous.
- Can Peter and Rose reunite? Their separation protects Rose in the short term, but it leaves open whether Peter can ever return without bringing the threat back to her.
- How much does Catherine know? Catherine is directing Peter toward Monroe, but the finale leaves questions about how much she knows about Monroe’s wider network and whether Night Action is also using Peter.
The official forward-looking consequence of the finale is Peter’s undercover assignment and Monroe’s influence over Hagan. The series has resolved the immediate KX plot while moving its larger conflict into the space between intelligence work and presidential power.
