No—television ratings were not about to be based on tweets. In December 2012, Nielsen and Twitter announced a U.S. partnership to create the Nielsen Twitter TV Rating, a standardized measure of television conversation on Twitter. It was designed to supplement Nielsen’s viewing ratings, not replace them. The experiment separated three different audiences: people who watched a program, people who posted about it, and people who saw those posts.
Why the headline sounded plausible in 2012
Live television was acquiring a “second screen.” Viewers watched broadcasts while commenting on phones and computers, and Twitter made that conversation visible in real time. The scale was striking: for Super Bowl XLVII, Nielsen cited an average television audience of 108.7 million alongside 26.1 million tweets. The figures showed how much discussion could surround a program, not that 26.1 million extra people had watched it. (Nielsen’s Super Bowl analysis)
That distinction was easy to lose in a provocative headline claiming that the “Nielsen family” was “so last century.” The headline was commentary, not a description of Nielsen’s business arrangement.
What “the Nielsen family” meant
The phrase refers to households that participate in Nielsen’s television audience panel. Historically, panel members supplied person-level information about who was watching, helping Nielsen estimate audiences for the much larger television market. A panel is not simply one family keeping a diary, nor is a measurement box a complete picture of modern viewing.

Nielsen now combines a representative person-level panel with large-scale data from cable and satellite set-top boxes and smart TVs. Its current U.S. national and local service says the system spans 45 million households and 75 million devices, figures Nielsen publishes for its own coverage. The panel helps identify people and co-viewing, while device data expands scale. (Nielsen’s U.S. TV measurement overview)
What Nielsen and Twitter actually announced
In an exclusive, multiyear U.S. agreement announced December 17–20, 2012, Nielsen and Twitter planned the Nielsen Twitter TV Rating. Built on Nielsen’s SocialGuide analytics, it was intended to measure the reach of television-related conversation on Twitter. Nielsen said the service would become available at the beginning of the 2013 fall television season and would complement existing television ratings. (Nielsen’s 2012 announcement)
“Complement” was the operative word. The partnership did not announce a new system in which networks would estimate viewers by counting tweets.
Three audiences that must not be conflated
| Quantity | What it describes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Television viewers | People Nielsen estimates watched a program, using audience-measurement methods. | How much they discussed the program online. |
| Tweet authors | People who posted program-related messages. | The total number of viewers or the size of the television audience. |
| Social-TV audience | People estimated to have seen program-related tweets, including those who never posted. | That everyone exposed to a tweet watched the program. |
A person can watch without posting, post after delayed viewing, see a clip without watching an episode, or encounter a spoiler while following an unrelated account. Tweet volume, unique authors and tweet viewers are therefore different metrics.

Why networks and advertisers wanted a social rating
Traditional ratings answered a crucial commercial question: how many people watched, and in which demographic. Social analytics addressed a different set of questions:
- How quickly are viewers reacting during a live broadcast?
- How intense or sustained is fan participation?
- Can a network extend a show’s life between episodes?
- Can a sponsor join a program-related conversation?
- Does a promotion turn passive viewers into participants?
Nielsen described social-TV measurement as covering both active participants and people who observed the conversation. In one contemporary example, a “Fan Favorite” campaign around Project Runway generated nearly five comments per unique user, which Nielsen presented as unusually high cable engagement at the time. That kind of statistic could help a network sell participation and activation; it was not a substitute for reach, frequency or demographic viewing estimates. (Nielsen on Twitter and TV engagement)
What the early evidence showed—and what it did not
A Nielsen/SocialGuide study reported that about 32 million people in the United States tweeted about television during 2012. Twitter activity was one of three statistically significant variables associated with television ratings, alongside prior-year ratings and advertising spend. The relationship was stronger among younger viewers:
| Group and episode type | Historical study finding |
|---|---|
| Age 18–34, premiere episodes | An 8.5% increase in Twitter volume was associated with a 1% increase in ratings. |
| Age 18–34, midseason episodes | A 4.2% increase in Twitter volume was associated with a 1% increase in ratings. |
| Age 35–49 | A 14% increase in Twitter volume was associated with a 1% increase in ratings. |
These are findings from an early-2013 study, not conversion rules for today’s programs. Nielsen explicitly said the analysis demonstrated correlation, not causation. A popular show may generate more tweets, while conversation may also encourage some people to watch or remain engaged. Both processes can operate at once. (Nielsen’s correlation study)

Why tweets could never be the whole television rating
Twitter users are not all viewers
People who post publicly are a self-selected population. Social-TV activity was particularly associated with younger audiences in the cited research, so a Twitter-heavy sample could overstate the importance of those viewers while missing silent audiences.
Conversation is not consumption
A message can concern a trailer, a clip, a celebrity, a news report or a previous episode. Streaming and binge viewing also weaken the link between a post’s timestamp and a specific live audience.
Volume does not reveal sentiment or attention
A scandal can produce a large, mostly negative conversation. An official account or coordinated campaign can create many posts without representing equivalent organic participation. Automated accounts, multiple accounts and multiple devices further complicate unique-person estimates.
Exposure is not the same as viewing
Someone may see a tweet in a timeline without watching the program, just as a viewer may never see any related tweet. Even a carefully estimated social reach cannot be added directly to a television rating.

What launched in 2013
The Nielsen Twitter TV Ratings service began operating in October 2013. Nielsen said it measured both the number of people posting about an episode and the number of people who viewed those posts. Its initial analysis found that the audience exposed to program-related tweets averaged approximately 50 times the number of people who authored them. (Nielsen’s launch announcement)
That 50-to-1 relationship illustrates why “counting tweets” was an inadequate description. The product attempted to estimate social reach, not merely total message volume. It was nevertheless a historical service launched in 2013; the current Nielsen pages cited here do not establish that this branded product remains available in 2026.
How the measurement problem looks now
Television audiences are spread across broadcast and cable, DVR and other time-shifted viewing, video-on-demand, connected televisions, streaming services, mobile devices, web video and out-of-home screens. A modern measurement system must reconcile those environments rather than rely on one social platform.
Nielsen’s current U.S. approach combines a person-level panel with large-scale viewing data and includes linear television, streaming, co-viewing and connected-device activity. Its broader portfolio includes Nielsen ONE for cross-platform measurement and Digital Content Ratings for digital reach, audience and time spent. Nielsen argues that panel data helps validate and calibrate larger device datasets because a device reports a screen or household, not necessarily an individual person or an attentive viewer. That is Nielsen’s stated position, and its importance is practical: buyers and sellers need a consistent, person-level basis for transactions across fragmented media. (Nielsen’s measurement-integrity explanation)
How to read the 2012 headline today
The story was not the death of Nielsen or the conversion of tweets into ratings. It was the recognition that television had more than one commercially meaningful audience behavior:
- Watching: estimated television consumption.
- Talking: posts and participation around a program.
- Being exposed: people who encountered that conversation.
Social data could help networks promote episodes, design fan campaigns and give sponsors a way to activate audiences in real time. It could not, by itself, provide a representative count of everyone who watched.
The Bottom Line
The “Nielsen family” was not replaced by Twitter. The 2012 partnership added a social layer to television measurement, teaching the industry to distinguish viewers, tweet authors and people exposed to a conversation. Nielsen’s current system still uses person-level panels alongside large-scale viewing data, while social metrics remain a separate signal of engagement.
