Its strongest reason to watch is the contrast between Neeson’s familiar dramatic persona and an absurd world that treats every ridiculous situation as serious business. Whether that comic rhythm works as well as it did in the original trilogy is the film’s central test.
What is the 2025 Naked Gun about?
Directed by Akiva Schaffer, the revival casts Neeson as Frank Drebin Jr., following the original character’s family line. Paramount’s official description says he “follows in his father’s footsteps.” Pamela Anderson and Paul Walter Hauser join an ensemble that also includes CCH Pounder, Kevin Durand, Cody Rhodes, Liza Koshy, Eddie Yu, and Danny Huston. Seth MacFarlane is among the producers. Paramount’s film page lists the premise and principal cast.
Paramount+ classifies it as a 2025 comedy and lists a runtime of 1 hour 25 minutes. That compact length suits a spoof built around a steady run of comic turns rather than an elaborate crime plot. The Paramount+ listing provides the service’s current film details.
Does Liam Neeson work as Frank Drebin Jr.?
Neeson’s casting is the reboot’s most immediate comic device. Audiences know him for grave, physically capable dramatic and action roles; here, the joke depends on that intensity remaining intact while the world around him becomes increasingly foolish. The Los Angeles Times frames the dramatic-persona contrast as a key part of the performance, while the Rotten Tomatoes critics-consensus description presents his deadpan approach as compatible with the original trilogy’s style. The latter is an aggregate’s summary, not evidence of a unanimous response.

That is a different route to the character than simply imitating Leslie Nielsen. Nielsen’s Drebin is the standard against which the revival will be measured, but Neeson’s appeal lies in letting his own screen image collide with the material. The film’s success therefore depends less on reproducing a familiar voice or mannerism than on whether the new lead can deliver absurd lines and situations without signaling that he knows they are absurd.
How closely does it resemble the Leslie Nielsen films?
The 2025 film follows the 1988–1994 trilogy: The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!, The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear, and Naked Gun 33⅓: The Final Insult. Its continuity is clearest in the comic machinery. The Los Angeles Times points to franchise-style set pieces including an opening melee, motorized mayhem, toilet humor, a climactic sporting event, and a comic love montage.
Those are recognizable ingredients, not a guarantee that every gag lands or that the revival duplicates the originals’ effect. The useful comparison is the method: solemn police-procedural framing against escalating nonsense, with visual business and wordplay competing for attention. Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus likewise emphasizes the deadpan fit with the trilogy’s comic style, but readers should treat that as a critical summary rather than a definitive verdict.
What does Pamela Anderson bring to the reboot?
Anderson is more than a name in the ensemble cast: TIME’s feature singles out her performance as a notable part of the film. That is TIME’s interpretation, not a claim of critical consensus. Her presence adds another point of distinction from a revival relying only on nostalgia for Nielsen-era gags, while the film still keeps the focus on the Drebin-centered spoof format.

Is The Naked Gun worth watching?
For viewers who enjoy deadpan absurdity, visual slapstick, and jokes delivered without a wink, the revival has a clear case: it carries forward familiar franchise devices while giving the lead role to an actor whose serious screen persona makes the premise newly legible. Those primarily seeking Nielsen’s exact comic presence may find the comparison hard to avoid; Neeson is a successor, not a replacement by impersonation. The 85-minute runtime also makes it a relatively brief comedy commitment.
Where can you stream The Naked Gun?
Paramount announced that the film would begin streaming on Paramount+ in the United States and Canada on September 30, 2025. That is a dated regional launch announcement, not a guarantee of present-day availability in every country. Check the current Paramount+ listing for the catalog and access terms where you live. Paramount’s September 2025 announcement also said the three Leslie Nielsen films were available on the service at that time; their current availability may differ.
