The Muses Behind These 10 Great Artists

“Muse” can mean inspiration, model, collaborator, or partner. These examples show why the label should not obscure the artist’s own work—or turn uncertain attributions into fact.

The title promises ten artist–muse pairings, but the available documented examples do not establish which ten people it means. Rather than present a guessed roster as fact, this article looks at several relationships that illustrate what “muse” can mean—and why the label should not eclipse the person’s own work.

What does “muse” mean in art history?

“Muse” is a flexible label. It may describe someone who inspired an artist, posed as a model, collaborated, or shared a personal relationship with the artist. Those roles can overlap, but one does not prove another: being called a muse is not evidence by itself of romance, collaboration, or sole influence. PBS’s American Masters feature notes that a muse is often, but not always, someone the artist loved.

People whose work can be obscured by the muse label

Elizabeth Siddal

Siddal is associated with the Pre-Raphaelite circle, but she was also a poet and artist. HASTA’s feature on four women linked to artists points to her self-portrait as part of that artistic identity. Reducing her to a model leaves out the work she made herself.

Victorine Meurent

Meurent is commonly discussed in connection with Édouard Manet, but HASTA also describes her as a painter who exhibited at the Paris Salon. The association with Manet should not become the whole account of her career.

Dora Maar

Maar is often framed through her relationship with Picasso. HASTA and AnOther’s overview of relationships in art history also identify her as a photographer, painter, and poet. Those practices are essential to understanding her beyond the familiar label.

Gala Dalí

AnOther describes Gala as Salvador Dalí’s wife and muse and notes her identities as a writer and artist. A personal relationship and a creative role may both matter, but neither should erase her independent work.

When an artistic connection is uncertain

Simonetta Vespucci and Botticelli

A popular feature published by Home as We Make It reports the widespread belief that Simonetta Vespucci was represented in Botticelli’s famous paintings. The feature presents this as a belief, not a settled identification. Without stronger museum or scholarly evidence, it should not be stated as fact.

How to assess an artist–muse story

A careful account separates what is documented from what is inferred. For each pairing, ask:

  • What is the evidence for the connection—such as a documented modeling relationship, collaboration, correspondence, or personal relationship?
  • Which specific artworks are securely connected to that person, and how certain is the identification?
  • What did the person create or do independently of the better-known artist?
  • Does the source establish the claim, or repeat a popular attribution that remains uncertain?

The contextual features cited here offer examples, not a verified roster of ten. They are not a sufficient basis for ten full biographical profiles or definitive claims about dates, artworks, and relationships.
