The Most Memorable Influencer Apology Videos on YouTube

From Logan Paul’s stripped-down So Sorry to Colleen Ballinger’s ukulele performance, these seven videos turned creator scandal into a recognizable form of YouTube crisis communication.

The most memorable influencer apology videos on YouTube include Logan Paul’s So Sorry, Laura Lee’s 2018 response, James Charles’s answer to Tati Westbrook, Jenna Marbles’s A Message, Shane Dawson’s Taking Accountability, David Dobrik’s two-part apology cycle, and Colleen Ballinger’s ukulele-driven Toxic Gossip Train.

They are memorable for very different reasons. Some acknowledged harm and paired words with concrete consequences. Others were widely criticized as vague, emotional, defensive, or theatrical. The common thread is that each became more than a statement of regret: it became a public performance of crisis management, judged by millions of viewers.

Memorable does not mean admirable. Some of the videos below were praised as unusually accountable; others were mocked, deleted, followed by a hiatus, or turned into memes. Together, they show how the YouTube apology became its own form of crisis communication.

Why these videos remain memorable

An influencer apology is rarely just a private expression of regret. It is a public video published on the same platform where the controversy took place, watched alongside reaction videos, commentary, memes, subscriber-count speculation, and news coverage. The apology becomes a second piece of content—and sometimes a new crisis in its own right.

A 2022 study of 117 YouTube apology videos found that mortification—acknowledging wrongdoing and seeking forgiveness—was the most common image-repair strategy. The research also found that viewers’ judgments of sincerity and their prior relationship with a creator affected whether they were willing to forgive. In practice, that means a bare wall, close framing, tears, lowered voice, direct eye contact, or an unusually serious tone may signal remorse, but none of those signals proves it.

The list is therefore not a ranking of the best apologies. It includes conventional apologies, corrective statements, responses to accusations, and one deliberately unconventional performance that became memorable precisely because it rejected the expected format.

The seven most unforgettable cases

Creator and video When Why it remains part of YouTube history
Logan Paul, So Sorry January 2018 A large-scale scandal that helped make the influencer apology a mainstream crisis ritual.
Laura Lee’s apology 2018 A frequently cited example of emotional presentation overshadowing accountability.
James Charles’s response to Tati Westbrook 2019 A response video absorbed into a serialized beauty-community feud.
Jenna Marbles, A Message June 2020 An apology paired with privating old videos and stepping away from YouTube.
Shane Dawson, Taking Accountability June 2020 A key entry in the 2020 reckoning over older YouTube material and creator accountability.
David Dobrik’s two apology videos March 2021 A visible correction cycle in which the first response was followed by a more expansive second statement.
Colleen Ballinger, hi. and Toxic Gossip Train June 2023 A ukulele performance that became a viral object of parody because it inverted the normal apology format.

1. Logan Paul — So Sorry (January 2018)

Logan Paul’s apology followed his publication of footage showing a deceased person in Japan’s Aokigahara Forest, commonly called the Suicide Forest in contemporary coverage. The backlash was especially intense because material connected to suicide had been presented as sensational YouTube content.

In So Sorry, Paul accepted that he should not have uploaded the footage and said he should have put the camera down. The stripped-down presentation and direct language fit the visual grammar that audiences had come to expect from a serious creator apology: a close camera, subdued tone, and an attempt to address viewers without the usual entertainment machinery.

Its importance goes beyond the wording of the video. Academic research later used Paul’s apology to examine perceived sincerity and forgiveness, while news coverage treated the episode as a major crisis for both the creator economy and YouTube. The video helped establish the idea that an influencer scandal would be followed by a recognizable public ritual: disappear briefly, return to camera, accept at least some responsibility, and ask the audience to judge the performance.

That does not mean the apology repaired the underlying harm. It means the event made the apology video itself impossible to ignore as a genre.

2. Laura Lee — the 2018 apology video

Laura Lee’s apology followed the resurfacing of racist tweets posted in 2012. Coverage described Lee as calling the tweets “vile and disgusting,” while the video attempted to respond directly to the controversy and to her followers.

The video became memorable because its emotional presentation became part of the story. Viewers and commentators criticized the visible distress and argued that the performance did not amount to convincing accountability. That reaction should be described as a public interpretation, not as a fact about Lee’s private sincerity: no outside observer can settle what a creator felt while recording.

What can be observed is the tension between looking sorry and explaining responsibility. An intimate camera setup, tears, and a distressed voice can focus attention on the creator’s feelings. A stronger crisis response also identifies the conduct, recognizes who was harmed, explains what will change, and accepts consequences. Lee’s video is frequently cited as a paradigmatic bad apology because many viewers felt the first part was more prominent than the rest.

3. James Charles — the response to Tati Westbrook’s Bye Sister (2019)

Tati Westbrook’s 43-minute Bye Sister video became a major event in beauty YouTube. James Charles responded with a video commonly identified in coverage as tati. It was later deleted and was widely described at the time as inauthentic or poorly received.

Rank #2
SENSYNE Ring Light with Stand, 50" Phone Tripod with Wireless Remote
  • 【Perfect Lighting for Video, Makeup & Streaming】3 color modes (warm, natural, cool) with 10 brightness levels let you easily create soft, even lighting for TikTok, Zoom calls, makeup, and video recording. No harsh shadows, no overexposure—just clear, flattering light every time.
  • 【50" Adjustable Tripod – Desk to Full Height】Extendable from 15.7" to 50", perfect for desk use, standing filming, or full-body shots. One setup for video calls, live streaming, selfies, and content creation.
  • 【360° Rotation for Any Shooting Angle】Flexible phone holder and adjustable head allow portrait, landscape, overhead, and low-angle shots—ideal for creators, vloggers, and everyday use.
  • 【Wireless Remote – Shoot Hands-Free】Includes wireless remote to take photos or videos up to 30ft away. Perfect for solo creators, group shots, and remote recording—no need to touch your phone.
  • 【All-in-One Ring Light Kit for Phone Creators】Includes ring light, tripod stand, phone holder, and remote. Compatible with iPhone & Android devices—perfect for TikTok, YouTube, live streaming, Zoom meetings, and everyday use.

Strictly speaking, this is not a simple apology-video example. It is a response inside a much larger dispute. That distinction matters: viewers were not evaluating a single creator’s confession in isolation. They were following an unfolding narrative in which an initial accusation was answered, challenged, revisited, and surrounded by reaction videos and commentary.

The episode belongs on this list because it demonstrated how quickly a personal conflict could become serialized platform entertainment. The beauty community’s audience consumed the dispute as a sequence of episodes, with each upload changing the meaning of the previous one. A response that might have been judged as a short statement in another setting instead became one installment in a public feud.

The lasting lesson is not a particular subscriber-count swing. It is that the apology or response can become content in its own right, complete with its own plot, audience expectations, and incentives.

4. Jenna Marbles — A Message (June 2020)

Jenna Marbles’s approximately 11-minute A Message addressed older videos that included blackface, anti-Asian jokes, and slut-shaming. She apologized, made problematic older material private, and announced that she was stepping away from YouTube.

That combination made the video a useful contrast with the standard apology cycle. Marbles did not only ask viewers to believe that she would behave differently in future content. She paired acknowledgment with visible corrective action and a retreat from public visibility. Reports at the time described the decision as leaving or stepping away from the platform; it should not be overstated as a permanent legal or business status beyond what those reports established.

Her response also illustrates why an apology cannot be judged only by production style. The video used the familiar direct-to-camera format, but its significance came from what happened around it: older videos were no longer public, and the creator surrendered the immediate attention that normally gives an apology its reach.

Leaving is not automatically proof of accountability, and remaining active is not automatically proof of its absence. But stepping away can function as a concrete consequence when it is paired with a clear acknowledgment of the material being removed and the reasons for doing so.

5. Shane Dawson — Taking Accountability (June 2020)

Shane Dawson’s Taking Accountability arrived during the broader 2020 reckoning over old YouTube content. The video addressed resurfaced racist material, including blackface, along with other controversial past content and relationships within the creator ecosystem. Contemporary descriptions emphasized Dawson’s acknowledgment of his racist past and his stated intention to change.

The title itself makes the video useful for examining a recurring problem in public apologies: a promise in the title is not the same thing as accountability in the body of the statement. Viewers and critics must ask what the creator actually names, whom the creator recognizes as harmed, whether responsibility is accepted without qualification, and what specific corrective steps follow.

It is important to separate the record of what Dawson said from later judgments about whether the response was adequate. The video is memorable partly because it became a test case for that distinction. A creator can use the vocabulary of accountability while an audience continues to debate whether the explanation is sufficiently specific, whether the consequences are proportionate, and whether change can be demonstrated over time.

6. David Dobrik — the two March 2021 apology videos

David Dobrik’s case is notable because it was not one apology but a correction cycle. He first posted a response addressing criticism connected to Vlog Squad content. The Washington Post reported that the initial video apologized directly to Seth Francois and discussed consent. After further reporting about misconduct allegations involving a former collaborator, Dobrik posted a second, longer video.

In that later response, according to the reporting, Dobrik addressed the allegations more directly, acknowledged an unfair power dynamic, expressed belief in the accuser, and announced a social-media hiatus. The allegations and accounts should remain attributed to the reporting; they should not be presented here as adjudicated criminal facts.

The important communication lesson is that the first apology did not end the story. It became part of the evidence audiences used to judge the second one. When viewers believe an initial response is evasive or incomplete, a follow-up must do more than repeat remorse. It has to explain what was missed, address the specific criticism, and show why the new statement should be considered more complete.

Dobrik’s two-video sequence makes the revision process visible. The second apology was not simply a new upload; it was also an answer to the perceived failures of the first.

7. Colleen Ballinger — hi. and Toxic Gossip Train (June 2023)

Colleen Ballinger’s approximately 10-minute video, titled hi., responded to allegations and criticism involving former young fans. Instead of delivering a conventional spoken apology, Ballinger picked up a ukulele and sang a song about a “toxic gossip train,” accusing critics of spreading rumors and seeking clout.

The unusual format made the response instantly recognizable. A cheerful melody, ukulele, and defensive lyrics inverted the expected conventions of an apology video, in which the creator is normally supposed to appear subdued, serious, and focused on the people affected. The result rapidly became a target of criticism, imitation, and parody, and was widely labeled one of the worst apology videos.

That reception is part of why the video belongs here, but the allegations themselves should be handled carefully. Coverage included accounts from former fans and allegations involving young people; those accounts should be attributed, and criminal or exploitative conclusions should not be independently asserted without an establishing source.

Ballinger’s video shows that violating the genre’s conventions can create enormous memorability. It also shows why memorability and effectiveness are separate measures. The performance made the response more shareable, but the same theatrical quality led many viewers to interpret it as dismissive or defensive rather than remorseful.

What these apologies reveal about YouTube crisis communication

The apology is also content

On YouTube, a crisis response is uploaded, titled, thumbnailized, recommended, clipped, reacted to, and potentially monetized like other media. Even a creator who wants to stop talking about a controversy must make a public decision about whether to post, what to show, and how to frame the upload. The medium makes the apology both a statement and a new media object.

That creates an unavoidable tension. The same direct address that lets a creator speak without an interviewer also turns remorse into a performance for an audience. A video can be emotionally sincere and still be carefully produced. Conversely, an unpolished appearance cannot by itself establish honesty.

Staging carries meaning—but it is not evidence by itself

The familiar “vlogpology” style often uses a plain background, close framing, reduced makeup, tears, lowered volume, long pauses, and direct eye contact. These choices communicate that the creator has moved from entertainment mode into confession mode. Research on apology videos identifies such recurring visual and rhetorical conventions.

But staging is a signal, not a verdict. Viewers interpret it through their existing relationship with the creator. A loyal audience may read a shaky voice as vulnerability; a skeptical audience may read the same behavior as manipulation. This helps explain why identical visual techniques can produce forgiveness in one case and ridicule in another.

Specificity usually matters more than atmosphere

Across the cases, the most useful questions are practical:

  • Does the creator clearly identify what happened?
  • Does the creator distinguish explanation from excuse?
  • Are the people harmed named or meaningfully acknowledged?
  • What corrective action has already happened?
  • What future change is promised, and how could viewers recognize it?
  • What consequences does the creator accept without asking the audience to remove them?

These questions do not provide a mathematical sincerity score. They do help separate remorseful-looking presentation from accountable communication. Jenna Marbles’s private-ing of older videos and departure offers one clear example of action accompanying words. David Dobrik’s second response shows how a follow-up can become more specific after an initial statement is criticized. Other cases demonstrate what happens when audiences feel that emotion, branding, or defensiveness dominates the explanation.

A second apology can become the real story

Most public apologies are treated as an ending: the creator speaks, the audience reacts, and the controversy is expected to fade. Dobrik’s March 2021 videos show the opposite pattern. The first response generated further scrutiny, and the next response had to address both the original allegations and the perceived inadequacy of the first apology.

Once an apology is public, it cannot control the conversation that follows. Every omission becomes discussable, and every later action becomes a test of the promises made on camera.

Unconventionality creates attention, not necessarily forgiveness

Ballinger’s ukulele performance is the clearest example of an apology rejecting its own conventions. It was distinctive enough to become instantly memeable. But a format that wins attention can lose the emotional and ethical signals audiences expect from an apology.

This is the central paradox of the genre: the most memorable response may be the least successful at repairing trust. Logan Paul’s video became a landmark because of the scale of the crisis. Laura Lee’s became a cautionary example because viewers focused on the gap between distress and accountability. Ballinger’s became unforgettable because the format itself appeared to argue with the premise of apology.

If you want to study the direct-to-camera look

The equipment is not the lesson. None of the products below should be read as an endorsement by, or evidence of use by, any creator discussed in this article. They are simply the basic categories involved in producing a clean direct-to-camera recording.

A ring light for video recording can provide even, front-facing illumination, while a wireless lavalier microphone for YouTube can make spoken audio clearer than a phone’s built-in microphone when the subject is sitting farther from the camera. Lighting and sound may make a video look more deliberate, but neither can substitute for specificity, corrective action, or accountability.

Honorable mentions and essential context

PewDiePie’s apology and later parodying of the apology-video format help show how quickly the genre became self-aware and meme-ready. Tati Westbrook’s Bye Sister is not itself an apology video, but it is essential context for understanding James Charles’s response and the evolution of beauty-creator crisis cycles.

These examples also point to a broader phenomenon. Once audiences recognized the visual language of the vlogpology, they could evaluate a new apology before hearing its argument: Is the creator sitting alone? Is the background unusually plain? Is the video titled with a vague phrase such as “A Message” or an explicit promise such as “Taking Accountability”? The format became familiar enough to parody—and familiar enough that viewers began looking past the staging to the substance.

How to judge a memorable apology without pretending to know the creator’s mind

The fairest reading separates three things that online commentary often collapses:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. The documented event: what was posted, said, removed, or announced, based on available reporting.
  2. The creator’s stated position: what the person accepts, denies, explains, or promises in the video.
  3. The audience’s reception: whether viewers praised the response, criticized it, mocked it, or withheld forgiveness.

That separation avoids two opposite errors. It prevents a polished video from being treated as proof that the underlying harm has been repaired, and it prevents public skepticism from being presented as proof of what a creator privately intended. The videos on this list are memorable because they expose that gap more clearly than ordinary content does.

Sources and scope

This feature draws on contemporary reporting about each incident and on academic research into YouTube apology videos, image repair, perceived sincerity, and forgiveness. Allegations involving living people are described as allegations or as subjects of reporting, not as independently adjudicated facts. Dates and video titles refer to the uploads and events identified in that reporting; deleted videos are included because their public circulation and reception remain historically significant.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which YouTube apology video was the most influential?

The most influential example is probably Logan Paul’s January 2018 So Sorry. Its scale, the seriousness of the underlying controversy, and the academic attention it received helped make the influencer apology a recognizable crisis-management ritual. That does not mean it repaired the underlying harm or was universally accepted.

Are all seven videos really apologies?

Not all of them are conventional apologies. James Charles’s video was a response to Tati Westbrook’s Bye Sister, and Colleen Ballinger’s hi. was widely interpreted as defensive rather than remorseful. They are included because both became major examples of how creators respond to public crisis on YouTube.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can viewers judge whether an influencer apology is sincere?

There is no reliable way for viewers to prove what a creator privately felt. A more careful evaluation looks at whether the video identifies the conduct, acknowledges who was harmed, accepts responsibility, describes specific corrective action, and accepts consequences. Audience reception is evidence of how the apology was interpreted, not proof of the creator’s inner sincerity.

The Bottom Line

The most memorable YouTube apologies are not necessarily the most effective ones. They remain significant because they reveal the mechanics of online image repair: emotion can be staged, specificity can be tested, corrective action can matter more than atmosphere, and an apology published as content can quickly become another chapter in the scandal.
