The Most Intimidating Small Men in Wrestling History

Rey Mysterio turned the underdog role into success against larger wrestlers; Spike Dudley made defiance his signature. Their stories show why intimidation in wrestling is about more than size.

Rey Mysterio and Spike Dudley are two of wrestling’s clearest examples of smaller men who could make a larger opponent—and an audience—take them seriously. Here, “intimidating” means more than physical size: it describes credible danger in a match, a willingness to confront bigger opponents, a distinctive style or character, and evidence that the act connected with fans. This is a defensible selection, not a definitive ranking: wrestling has no agreed measure of intimidation, and the available records do not establish a complete list across promotions.

What makes a smaller wrestler intimidating?

Size alone does not determine how threatening a wrestler feels. A smaller performer can build credibility through the way a match is told: absorbing punishment, refusing to retreat, landing distinctive offense, or earning a win that changes what the audience thinks is possible. The two central examples here arrived at that effect differently. Rey Mysterio’s stature and high-flying style made him an underdog who could succeed against larger opponents; Spike Dudley’s defining trait was a character who would confront them without backing down.

“Small” also needs qualification. Mysterio and Dudley were smaller than many of their peers, while WWE’s historical category of “little people” performers refers to a separate tradition and presentation. Those categories are not interchangeable, and neither one is a measure of toughness.

Rey Mysterio: the underdog who changed expectations

Size as part of the story

WWE’s 2006 profile of Rey Mysterio billed him at 5 foot 6 and recalled that AAA promoter Antonio Peña initially expected him to work with the minis because of his size. Mysterio’s own account put the doubt plainly: “A lot of people have doubted me because of my size.” He said he wanted to prove he deserved to be at the top and to become World Heavyweight Champion.

The intimidation in Mysterio’s case did not come from presenting himself as an immovable force. His speed, aerial offense, and willingness to take on larger wrestlers gave the underdog story a credible in-ring answer. In a WWE-published interview, he connected that opportunity to a broader shift in perception: working with larger wrestlers helped audiences believe smaller wrestlers could belong in those matches. He also said, “I made history when I became World Champion.”

Why his impact outlasted the underdog label

Mysterio’s career matters to this topic because success challenged a familiar expectation about what a wrestler should look like. In a 2023 interview recap, ProWrestling.net quoted Mysterio saying, “I broke that stereotypical type of what a wrestler should look like.” That is a more useful measure of intimidation than a height comparison: he could make the size disadvantage feel like a source of suspense, then make his success feel earned.

Spike Dudley: defiance as a weapon

A character who would not retreat

Spike Dudley’s appeal rested on a different contrast. WWE’s retrospective on Spike Dudley describes the character as a small man who would not back down. Matt Hyson, who performed as Spike, put it this way: “I was supposed to be a little maniac who wouldn’t back down from anyone.” The character’s audacity made an encounter with a much larger opponent feel dangerous even before the first blow.

The Bam Bam Bigelow match and earned credibility

WWE’s retrospective points to Spike’s matches with bigger wrestlers, including Bam Bam Bigelow, as a key part of the story. Hyson described the significance of beating Bigelow: “That really put me over the top and gave me credibility that even though I’m 140 lbs., I can be in there with these giants and have a chance at winning.” The 140-pound figure is Hyson’s quoted account in WWE’s retrospective, not an independently verified measurement.

  • Collectible Superstar Series: WWE fans can find their favorite Superstar figure or can collect them all (each sold separately, subject to availability)

The distinction from Mysterio is clear. Mysterio’s signature style made the physical mismatch visible through movement and high-flying offense; Spike’s character made it visible through stubborn confrontation. In both cases, the larger opponent was not merely a prop: the match had to persuade viewers that the smaller wrestler’s chance was real.

Where historical “little people” performers fit—and where they do not

WWE’s historical overview, “The Big History of WWE’s Little People,” published in 2012, documents a distinct strand of wrestling history that includes performers such as Sky Low Low, Lord Littlebrook, Haiti Kid, Dink, Mexican minis, and Hornswoggle. The page describes appearances and presentations that could involve novelty, comedy, or specialized matches. It does not establish that every performer in this history was presented as intimidating, nor does membership in this tradition make someone directly comparable to Mysterio or Dudley.

  • WWE fans can find their favorite Superstar figure or can collect them all (each sold separately, subject to availability).

The overview also recounts a WrestleMania III mixed tag match involving Haiti Kid and Little Beaver. WWE reported that the event took place before more than 93,000 fans; that is WWE’s published attendance figure, not an independently verified count. The match is relevant as evidence of the tradition’s place in WWE’s event history, not as proof of a universal audience response or a ranking of performers’ threat.

How to compare these wrestlers without pretending there is a definitive ranking

There is no established cross-promotion metric for intimidation, and the documented examples support distinct kinds of credibility rather than a single score. A useful comparison asks what the performer did with the mismatch:

  • Fans can collect the sets to build bigger battles and displays (Each sold separately, subject to availability).
  • Match credibility: Mysterio built the underdog premise through matches with larger wrestlers and success at championship level; Spike’s account singles out the credibility he gained by beating Bigelow.
  • Signature approach: Mysterio relied on speed and high-flying offense; Spike’s central device was a defiant character who would confront anyone.
  • Meaning of “small”: Mysterio and Spike are considered here as smaller men among their peers. WWE’s historical little people performers belong to a separate tradition and should not be folded into the same category without explanation.
  • Evidence and limits: WWE’s profiles and retrospectives document its own history and quote the performers, but they are promotion-produced sources. Billed or recalled measurements are not independent physical measurements.

By those criteria, Mysterio and Spike are compelling answers to the title’s question for different reasons: one made the underdog’s style and success alter expectations; the other made refusal to back down the heart of his character. Other wrestlers could qualify under different criteria, but the evidence here does not support an exhaustive historical top ranking.
