Betty & Me #16, published in 1968, is the clearest documented example behind the reputation of Archie comics’ suggestive covers. Archie Comics itself has called its cover “world-famous widely memed.” But “inappropriate” is a subjective reaction: the available documentation does not establish that this cover was censored, recalled, or officially condemned, nor does it support a definitive ranking of several covers.
Betty & Me #16: the cover people keep sharing
Archie’s announcement of a facsimile edition identifies Betty & Me #16 as a 1968 issue and describes its cover as “sporting a world-famous widely memed cover by Archie legend Dan DeCarlo.” Archie Comics’ announcement makes this the strongest documented lead example for a discussion of Archie covers that readers find suggestive.
The cover’s notorious reputation comes from how viewers read its visual joke, not from a documented official judgment that it crossed a line. The publisher’s description confirms its online notoriety, but does not state the artist’s intent or provide a full explanation of the image. Calling it “inappropriate” is therefore a matter of interpretation, not a verified rating or censorship finding.
How to inspect the issue
Archie’s store has listed an official Betty & Me #16 facsimile edition, described as reproducing the cover, story pages, and other original material. It is a modern reprint, not an original 1968 comic. Check the publisher’s listing for the edition and current availability; store inventory can change.

Is this cover actually banned or censored?
No such action is established for Betty & Me #16 by the sources cited here. A cover becoming famous online for a double entendre is not the same as a regulator banning it, a publisher recalling it, or an authority officially condemning it. Collector commentary may call the cover infamous, but that is commentary rather than proof of a formal action or the publisher’s intent. Collector commentary should be read in that light.

A separate Archie controversy: Singapore’s restriction on a Kevin Keller story
Archie has faced documented content-related restrictions in other contexts, but they should not be conflated with the Betty & Me cover. In 2014, TIME reported that Singapore’s Media Development Authority restricted distribution of an Archie publication featuring Kevin Keller’s same-sex wedding. TIME’s report describes a distribution restriction on that publication; it does not document a ban on Betty & Me #16.
That distinction matters: a regulator’s stated rationale, as reported by TIME, is the regulator’s position, not a neutral description of the comic. The case provides context for differing political responses to Archie content, not evidence about why the 1968 cover was drawn or accepted.

Archie says its retailer-exclusive variant-cover program requires artists to submit concept sketches for editorial approval before final art. The publisher’s program page describes that current process. It does not establish the review rules in 1968, explain the original cover’s intent, or show that the historic image was either approved or challenged under today’s policy.

The available issue-specific documentation supports one especially well-known example, not a reliable all-time ranking. Claims that other Archie covers are inappropriate need to be tied to identifiable covers and issues; broad claims about stereotypes, adult subjects, or censorship do not establish particular examples. A careful comparison would distinguish the strength of the cover evidence, how explicit a double entendre seems, whether story context changes its meaning, and whether any publisher or regulator took documented action.
