Woody takes the top spot—not because any official poll crowned him Pixar’s best, but because his anxious loyalty drives a memorable change from guarding his place as Andy’s favorite to caring for the other toys. This editorial ranking weighs four things: character arc, emotional resonance, distinctiveness, and recognition within a film or franchise. The order is a judgment, not a popularity measurement.
How this ranking works
Each character is judged by how clearly they change, how strongly they affect the story, what makes them distinctive, and—where relevant—how central or recurring they are across a franchise. These are qualitative criteria, not a shared scoring system or audience survey. Pixar’s official descriptions help establish character roles and premises; the ranking itself is editorial.

The 20 best Pixar characters
-
Woody — Toy Story
Woody begins as the toy protecting his position as Andy’s favorite, but his story grows into one about loyalty to the whole group. That mixture of insecurity and care gives the lanky cowboy both comic friction and a compelling arc. Pixar presents him as a traditional pull-string toy at the center of the original film. Pixar’s Toy Story page introduces the premise: “Ever wonder what toys do when people aren’t around?”
-
Joy — Inside Out
Joy’s optimism is both her strength and the source of the film’s central tension: keeping Riley happy is not as simple as Joy first assumes. Pixar describes her as lighthearted and determined to find fun in every situation, and says, “Joy’s goal has always been to make sure Riley stays happy.” The character works because that goal is tested rather than merely celebrated. Pixar’s Inside Out page gives the studio’s character description.

-
Remy — Ratatouille
Remy makes an outsider’s ambition easy to understand: he wants to cook, and pursuing that dream means taking risks and negotiating who he is. The clarity of that conflict makes him an engaging lead. His placement here reflects the character’s dramatic premise and distinctiveness, not a measured comparison of audience favorites.
-
Dory — Finding Nemo
Dory’s sociability and sunny outlook make her more than comic relief. A memory limitation shapes the way she moves through the story, while her friendliness and determination give her an emotional strength of her own. Pixar describes her as hospitable and friendly, with a relentlessly half-full outlook. Pixar’s Finding Nemo page describes Dory and the film’s other central characters.
-
Carl Fredricksen — Up
Carl is a grieving, prickly protagonist whose long-held dream becomes an unexpected adventure with Russell. The contrast between his resistance to change and the journey he undertakes gives his transformation its force. Pixar identifies him as a 78-year-old retired balloon salesman setting out to pursue that dream. Pixar’s Up page introduces Carl and Russell.
-
Edna Mode — The Incredibles
Edna makes a supporting role feel larger through force of personality and sharp comic timing. Her costume-design scene, in which she rejects capes, is a compact showcase of how decisively she can take control of a moment. She does not need a long character arc to be unforgettable: distinctiveness is her case for the list.

Miguel Rivera — Coco
Miguel’s musical ambition collides with a family ban that has lasted generations, giving Coco a clear conflict between personal dream and family history. Pixar identifies Miguel as 12 and describes that struggle directly. His point of view keeps the story’s larger questions about memory and family grounded in an individual choice. Pixar’s Coco page introduces Miguel and Héctor.
-
Sulley — Monsters, Inc.
Sulley’s imposing presence makes his shift toward caring protection especially satisfying. The change is the point: a character associated with scaring becomes emotionally invested in a child’s well-being. That contrast gives his arc more texture than a simple story of becoming nicer.
-
WALL-E — WALL-E
WALL-E is a distinctive lead because curiosity and persistence carry so much of his story without relying on conventional dialogue. His quiet presence gives the film room to communicate through movement, attention, and small gestures. That makes him one of Pixar’s most unusual protagonists.
-
Héctor — Coco
Héctor brings humor and urgency together: he is a charming trickster with a personal stake in being remembered. Pixar describes his attempt to cross the bridge to the Land of the Living and the importance of remembrance in the film’s world. That rule makes his predicament emotionally legible, while his personality keeps it lively. Pixar’s Coco page explains Héctor’s role.

Jessie — Toy Story
Jessie brings energy and a history that widen the emotional range of the Toy Story ensemble. She is memorable not just as a lively presence but as a character whose past gives the series’ questions about being loved and left behind another perspective.
-
Marlin — Finding Nemo
Marlin’s overprotectiveness is both the obstacle to his journey and its emotional starting point. To search for Nemo, he has to move beyond fear and learn to trust. Pixar describes him as a loving, responsible father who keeps his promise through Nemo’s early years; the drama comes from seeing that devotion tested by the need to let go. Pixar’s Finding Nemo page outlines the character.
-
Bing Bong — Inside Out
Bing Bong’s wish not to be left behind as Riley grows up gives him a poignant supporting role. Pixar identifies him as Riley’s imaginary friend, desperate not to be forgotten. His place on the list comes from how directly that small, personal fear touches the film’s larger story of growing up. Pixar’s Inside Out page introduces him.
-
Buzz Lightyear — Toy Story
Buzz begins with the confidence of a space-ranger action figure who believes he is on a mission for Star Command. That mistaken belief sets him up as a comic foil for Woody, but the identity crisis also gives him something real to overcome. Pixar’s description captures the premise that makes their early rivalry work. Pixar’s Toy Story page describes Buzz and Woody.

Lightning McQueen — Cars
Lightning’s move from self-centered ambition toward connection with a community is a familiar sports-story arc, but it is effective because the change has a clear direction. His development from pursuing success alone to valuing other people gives the film its character-driven payoff.
-
Elastigirl (Helen Parr) — The Incredibles
Helen Parr stands out for her competence as a hero and her role within a family of superheroes. She is not simply an accomplished fighter; her practical judgment helps make the family’s story work. That combination gives her a strong claim among Pixar’s central heroes.
-
Mei Lee — Turning Red
Mei’s coming-of-age story makes her a character defined by a changing sense of self. The appeal lies in the perspective of a young protagonist whose growing pains are the story, rather than a side issue to a larger adventure.
-
Luca Paguro — Luca
Luca’s curiosity and friendship give the film a warm, accessible center. His place here rests on the appeal of a protagonist whose relationships and openness to experience carry the emotional weight.

Merida — Brave
Merida’s independence puts her in conflict with inherited expectations, giving Brave a character-led source of tension. Her determination makes her distinctive, while the clash between what she wants and what is expected of her gives the story its shape.
-
Anxiety — Inside Out 2
Anxiety gives Riley’s teenage transition a vivid new presence inside Headquarters. Pixar identifies Anxiety among the new emotions arriving in the sequel. The character earns this final place by making a familiar feeling an active force in the story, rather than a passing label. Pixar’s Inside Out 2 page introduces the new emotions.
How the ranking spans Pixar’s films
The list draws on films from several periods, rather than treating one release era as the whole of Pixar. Pixar’s official feature-film catalog lists Toy Story (1995), Finding Nemo (2003), Up (2009), Coco (2017), and Inside Out 2 (2024), among other releases. Those dates place foundational films and recent sequels in the same studio history; they do not establish which characters audiences prefer.
