Jonathan Joestar’s hand-over-face poses and Jotaro Kujo’s pointing pose are especially recognizable examples. Their theatricality is no accident: posing is a defining part of JoJo’s visual identity.
Why posing is central to JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure
The official JoJo portal describes the series’ poses as strange but memorable: bodies can bend beyond ordinary limits and still suggest a shape a person might imitate. It connects creator Hirohiko Araki’s approach to inspiration from Michelangelo’s sculptures, with bodily distortion helping make images linger in the viewer’s mind.
The anime carries that visual language onto the screen. In its animation production notes, the team says it deliberately reproduced the manga’s distinctive poses alongside its sound effects, theatrical dialogue, motion lines, and framing. Changes in lighting, including spotlight effects, can make a pose feel like a staged character reveal rather than a routine action stance.
Four recognizable JoJo poses
These examples are an editorial selection, not a popularity ranking. Crunchyroll’s feature on famous JoJo poses identifies Jonathan’s hand-over-face pose and Jotaro’s pointing pose as forms commonly referenced in other works, and describes two additional Jonathan variations.

Jonathan Joestar’s hand-over-face pose
Jonathan’s open hand held in front of his face is among the series’ classic poses. Its striking hand-and-face silhouette makes it easy to recognize even without a complex setting, and the pose feature notes that other anime have referenced it.
Jotaro Kujo’s pointing pose
Jotaro’s direct point turns his hand and gaze toward the viewer, giving the pose an immediate, confrontational quality. Crunchyroll identifies it as a frequent reference target. Of the examples here, it is the most direct form of address: the character seems to point beyond the frame.

Jonathan’s crossed-leg motion pose
In this variation, Jonathan crosses his legs, angles his left arm down with the palm turned back, and holds his right arm parallel to his chest. The pose feature presents it as an early image that helped set the tone for later parts. Its crossed limbs and opposing arm directions create a more kinetic silhouette than a straightforward standing stance.
Jonathan’s wide-stance hand-over-face pose
This variation pairs a wide-legged stance with Jonathan’s right hand open in front of his face. His left arm reaches behind him, palm up. The pose feature also calls this a classic form referenced in other works. Compared with the crossed-leg version, its broad stance gives it a more grounded, expansive outline.

How to compare or recreate the poses
There is no measured winner, so a useful comparison depends on what you mean by “iconic.” Consider these practical differences rather than treating them as a scorecard:
- Recognition beyond JoJo: Crunchyroll specifically notes references to Jonathan’s hand-over-face poses and Jotaro’s point; that is qualitative evidence of cross-series recognition, not a poll or ranking.
- Visual readability: Jotaro’s point is a simple, direct gesture, while Jonathan’s poses rely on a larger arrangement of arms, legs, and torso.
- Character impression: The pointing pose reads as direct address. Jonathan’s variations emphasize theatrical body shapes and movement.
- Ease of recreation: A pointing gesture is relatively simple to adapt. The crossed-leg or wide-stance poses involve more coordinated positioning, so use a comfortable range of motion rather than forcing a dramatic angle.
To try a pose, focus first on its overall silhouette, then place the arms and hands, and finally adjust the legs and torso. A mirror or photograph can help show whether the major angles remain clear; no exact body shape is required to capture the pose’s visual idea.

What makes one pose “the most iconic”?
Iconic can mean different things: widely recognized outside the franchise, strongly tied to a character, visually clear at a glance, or memorable to an individual fan. The available pose feature supports the first measure for the examples it discusses, but does not establish an all-time ranking or quantify how often any pose is recognized. A personal favorite may therefore differ from the most frequently referenced pose.
For readers who want to study the art itself, the official portal notes that three JoJo art books have been published. Edition and availability can vary. VIZ’s official JoJo manga page is another place to find the series in print.
