A sudden shock can be devastating, but shock alone does not make a loss linger.

The most heartbreaking anime deaths, ranked
1. Jiraiya — Naruto Shippuden
Jiraiya’s death in battle against Pain is devastating not only as a major loss, but as a turning point for Naruto. Different rankings favor different characters because they are making editorial choices or recording audience votes, not applying a validated scale of fictional grief. Ranker displayed 54.3K voters and 566.3K votes on a page marked updated August 29, 2024; those figures describe participation on that platform, not proof that its ordering identifies the most heartbreaking death.
The strongest measure for an individual viewer is often the story’s relationships and what the survivors do with their loss. That is why a sudden tragedy, a farewell between a mentor and students, and the slow recognition of a friendship’s importance can all leave different kinds of lasting sadness.
