Which Mopar muscle cars became famous in movies?
The strongest screen associations in Dodge’s histories center on two models: the Charger and the Challenger. Their roles differ: one Charger is a memorable car in a film, another anchors a fictional franchise character, and the Challenger is central to a pursuit film. A screen role is not the same thing as a celebrity’s personal car.
The Dodge Charger in Bullitt
Dodge says the Charger made its film debut in Bullitt (1968). The car was a black Charger R/T with a 440 Magnum V-8, four-speed manual transmission and black vinyl roof. These are details of the film car as described in Dodge’s 2026 Charger anniversary history; they should not be confused with specifications for every Charger or every later generation.
The 1970 Charger in Fast & Furious
Dodge identifies a 1970 Charger R/T in the original The Fast and the Furious (2001), with Chargers returning in later entries. The car is associated with Dominic Toretto, Vin Diesel’s fictional character. That association does not prove Diesel owned the particular film car.

There is a separate, documented connection between Diesel and the brand. A 2017 Dodge/SRT campaign release described him as a campaign partner and quoted him saying, “Ever since ‘The Fast & Furious’ began, my favorite has been the 1970 Dodge Charger.” That is Diesel’s stated favorite in a promotional release, not an ownership record.
The Challenger R/T in Vanishing Point
Dodge’s history of the 1970 Challenger identifies a Challenger R/T as the central car in Vanishing Point. The 1970 model could be equipped with a 426-cubic-inch HEMI V-8 rated by the manufacturer at 425 horsepower. That figure is a period manufacturer specification, not an independent test result, and the source does not establish that every film car had that engine.

What makes an on-screen Charger different from a production car?
A movie vehicle may be extensively altered to serve the production. The Petersen Automotive Museum’s record for the 1970 Charger R/T used in F9: The Fast Saga (2021) describes a custom car with a carbon-fiber widebody, custom frame and mid-engine layout. The museum says it is one of three remaining stunt cars built for the film. Those are filming modifications, not factory Charger specifications.
This distinction matters when talking about “the car” from a movie: a character may be associated with a model, while individual screen vehicles can be stunt builds, hero cars or promotional vehicles. The museum’s account supports the customization and stunt-car details for this particular F9 vehicle; it does not establish celebrity ownership.

Which celebrities does Dodge identify as HEMI collectors?
Dodge’s HEMI history names Jay Leno, Tim Allen, Vin Diesel and Bill Goldberg as HEMI collectors. The cited passage does not specify each person’s cars or say that they all own the same classic Dodge or Plymouth models. It is accurate to call them HEMI collectors on Dodge’s account, but not to use that list as proof of ownership of a particular screen-used Charger or Challenger.

Mopar’s classic muscle overview places several models in the broader performance lineage: the 1969 Charger, 1971 Dodge Demon, 1970 Dodge Challenger, 1970 Dodge Coronet Super Bee and 1970 Plymouth Barracuda (‘Cuda). It describes the Challenger and ‘Cuda with 426 HEMI options, the Super Bee with 440 Six-Pack and 426 HEMI options, and the Demon with a 340-cubic-inch V-8. This establishes model and engine context, not a Hollywood appearance for each car.

The Black Ghost: a street-racing legend, not a movie credit
Dodge tells a different kind of Mopar story with the Black Ghost: a black 1970 Challenger R/T SE associated with Detroit street racer Godfrey Qualls. The manufacturer’s account describes its HEMI, gator-grain vinyl roof and racing history. How to separate movie fame from ownership claims
- Character association: Dominic Toretto’s Charger is a fictional character’s car, not by itself proof of Vin Diesel’s ownership.
- Screen-used vehicle: The Petersen record documents a modified F9 stunt Charger; its film configuration is not a stock-car specification.
- Celebrity collection: Dodge names four HEMI collectors, but the cited history does not itemize their vehicles.
- Promotional connection: Diesel’s 2017 Dodge/SRT campaign association and quoted favorite are brand-campaign evidence, not independent proof that he owned the Charger.
