At 20, he became the youngest heavyweight champion in history; in 1990, Buster Douglas knocked him out and ended his first reign. Tyson’s later comebacks are real, but “resurrection” is an interpretation—not a settled verdict on his life or career.
How Mike Tyson became heavyweight champion
Tyson reached boxing’s summit at remarkable speed. In November 1986, aged 20, he defeated Trevor Berbick to become the youngest heavyweight champion in history, a milestone recognized by WWE and Simon & Schuster. The BBC’s account of the fight says Berbick was knocked down three times before the contest ended.

That achievement defines the scale of Tyson’s early rise. It does not, by itself, explain the complicated life that followed; the sports record and the personal and legal history need to be considered separately.
The Douglas defeat and the end of Tyson’s first reign
In February 1990, Tyson faced Buster Douglas in Tokyo. Douglas knocked him out in the tenth round, ending Tyson’s first championship reign in one of heavyweight boxing’s most striking upsets, according to BBC Sport.
#1 Best Overall
The loss was a decisive sporting turning point, but it was not the only major change in Tyson’s life. The years that followed included a criminal conviction and imprisonment, followed later by a return to professional boxing.
Legal and financial setbacks
In 1992, Tyson was convicted of rape and sentenced to prison. Biography.com records the conviction; it should be described as a serious legal outcome, not reduced to a passing plot point or blurred with the separate question of when he returned to boxing.
Rank #2
Biography.com also reports that Tyson filed for bankruptcy in 2003. That filing is an important part of the story, but the available record here does not establish a reliable total for his losses or a simple explanation for how his finances reached that point.
Returning to boxing—and what “comeback” means
Tyson returned to professional boxing after prison and recovered heavyweight titles in 1996. Those milestones mark a sporting comeback, though the precise opponents, dates and title organizations are not detailed in the sources cited here. They should not be conflated with the start of his career or treated as proof that every earlier problem had been resolved.
His professional career later entered a long hiatus. Tyson’s last professional fight before 2024 was against Kevin McBride in 2005, according to the Associated Press.
Tyson’s 2024 fight with Jake Paul
In November 2024, aged 58, Tyson fought Jake Paul in an eight-round bout in Arlington, Texas. The Associated Press reported that Paul won by unanimous decision and that this was Tyson’s first sanctioned professional fight since 2005.
It was a late-career return to a sanctioned bout, not a championship comeback. The result belongs to the chronology of Tyson’s public life in boxing; it does not establish a return to the elite form of his heavyweight title years.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to understand the “resurrection” in Tyson’s story
“Resurrection” captures one way to frame Tyson’s returns to the ring and to public life, but it is not an objective summary of every phase. The chronology supports a more careful account: a historically young champion, a landmark defeat, serious legal and financial setbacks, further boxing success, and a later return that ended in defeat.
Best Value
Tyson’s memoir, Undisputed Truth: My Autobiography, co-written with Larry Sloman and listed by Simon & Schuster, offers his own account. Read it as Tyson’s perspective; independent reporting, such as the BBC, AP and Biography.com accounts linked above, provides a different way to check the chronology and reported outcomes.
