Donald Trump’s claim that Melania was “Selling out, FAST!” overstated the film’s ticket demand. Some individual screenings did sell out, but independent checks also found lightly booked and apparently empty showings. The documentary had a surprisingly strong opening for its genre—about $7.16 million in North America—but attendance dropped sharply in its second weekend, and the film finished its theatrical run with approximately $16.56 million worldwide.
The evidence supports a narrower conclusion: Melania attracted a real and unusually large documentary audience, but the available ticketing data does not show a nationwide sellout pattern.
What Trump claimed—and what the evidence shows
On January 26, 2026, Trump promoted Melania on Truth Social as a “MUST WATCH” and urged followers to “Get your tickets today — Selling out, FAST!”
That was a genuine statement from the former president, but “selling out” can mean very different things in a theatrical-release context. A single performance can sell every available seat without a film selling out most theaters, and a theater can have a few full screenings alongside many mostly empty ones.

Reporting before the film’s release showed exactly that kind of uneven demand. Forbes documented an apparently empty Friday-night showing at a Cinemark location in Jacksonville, Florida, while WIRED found only two theaters with sold-out opening-day screenings during its checks. WIRED also reported that one Florida screening initially shown as sold out later displayed seats as available.
Those snapshots cannot determine the occupancy of every screening. Ticket maps change, seats can be held or released, and an online reservation does not prove that every ticket holder attended. But they do make a broad, literal interpretation of Trump’s statement untenable.
Some screenings sold out—but that is not the same as a nationwide sellout
The strongest reading of the available evidence is neither that the sellouts were fabricated nor that the entire theatrical run was full.
WIRED found two theaters with sold-out opening-day screenings. That matters because it demonstrates that the film had concentrated pockets of strong demand. It also means that saying “nobody wanted to see it” would be just as inaccurate as saying theaters nationwide were rapidly selling out.

Forbes’ Jacksonville example showed that at least one major theater had seats available for a Friday-night performance while the film was being promoted as a fast-selling event. The Boston Globe likewise reported sharp local differences: some screenings had sold few or no advance tickets, while one theater in Tyngsborough, Massachusetts, had sold 26 tickets for one Friday showing and roughly six for a later performance.
The pattern was therefore localized rather than uniform. A political audience may have filled particular performances in areas with especially strong interest, while other locations struggled to build an audience.
Why ticket listings cannot prove exact attendance
Public ticketing information is useful directional evidence, but it is not a complete attendance audit. A theater’s seat map may reflect:
- Tickets already purchased by ordinary customers;
- Complimentary tickets, promotional allocations, or group reservations;
- Seats temporarily held by the theater;
- Tickets bought by people who ultimately do not attend; and
- Purchases made after an earlier screenshot or check.
For the same reason, an apparently empty online seat map does not prove that a screening had zero attendees, and a temporary “sold out” label does not necessarily establish the final number of people in the auditorium.
There is also no evidence in the cited reporting that Trump personally bought out theaters or that the film’s sales were “fake.” Claims about bulk ticket purchases remain unproven and should not be presented as fact.

Melania had a strong documentary opening
The sellout claim was exaggerated, but the film’s opening performance was not imaginary. Melania opened on January 30, 2026, in approximately 1,778 North American theaters and earned an estimated $7.16 million domestically in its opening weekend. The Associated Press and Forbes both reported an opening of about $7 million, while The Numbers lists an opening-weekend total of $7,161,605.
For a documentary, that was a notable result. The opening reportedly ranked third at the North American box office and was described as the strongest non-music documentary opening in roughly a decade. The performance also exceeded the subdued expectations that had surrounded the release.
Audience composition helped explain the initial result. Axios reported that the film appealed particularly to a politically engaged audience, including older white women. That kind of concentrated audience can produce a powerful first weekend when supporters turn out immediately, especially after prominent political promotion.
But a strong opening weekend and a broad, sustained theater sellout are different measurements. The first indicates how many people bought tickets during the initial release period. The second would require consistent high occupancy across a much wider set of theaters and showtimes.
The second weekend fell by about 67%
The film’s momentum weakened quickly. TechCrunch reported an estimated second-weekend gross of $2.37 million, a decline of approximately 67% from its opening weekend. Its cumulative box office was about $13.5 million at that point.
That steep drop is consistent with a release driven heavily by an already-mobilized audience: many of the most motivated viewers attend immediately, while fewer casual or undecided viewers follow in later weeks. Unfavorable reviews may also have limited word-of-mouth expansion. The film was not screened for critics in advance, and reviews released after opening were generally negative.
The decline does not prove that the opening was misleading. It shows that the film’s initial audience did not continue arriving at the same rate.

Final box-office figures put the theatrical run in perspective
The Numbers records the film’s completed theatrical totals as follows:
| Measure | Reported result |
|---|---|
| Domestic gross | $16,357,453 |
| International gross | $199,327 |
| Worldwide gross | $16,556,780 |
| Maximum theater count | 2,003 theaters |
| Average theatrical run | Approximately 2.8 weeks per theater |
The international result was very small compared with the North American total, so this was overwhelmingly a domestic theatrical story. The roughly 2.8-week average run also points to a brief event-style release rather than a long-lasting theatrical presence.

These figures should not be confused with the amount received by Amazon MGM Studios. Box-office gross is the money paid by customers for tickets. Theaters retain a share, with the remainder going to the distributor and other participants under the terms of the release.
Did the movie lose money?
Public reporting described Amazon MGM’s acquisition or rights cost as approximately $40 million, with another roughly $35 million reportedly spent on marketing and theatrical distribution. If those figures are broadly accurate, the reported exposure could total about $75 million.

However, that is not an audited cost figure, and the comparison is more complicated than subtracting the worldwide gross from $75 million. A later analysis cautioned that the reported $40 million acquisition figure may include an associated Prime Video docuseries. The precise allocation between the film and that related project is not publicly established.
Streaming value, licensing arrangements, tax treatment, ancillary revenue, and the theater-distributor split also affect profitability. For those reasons, it is not possible to responsibly state an exact loss or exact break-even point from the available information.
The safer conclusion is that the theatrical gross was modest relative to the reported spending estimates, and that theatrical ticket sales alone were unlikely to recoup the full reported exposure. That is different from proving a precise financial loss for the overall project.
What the film is about
Melania is a 104-minute documentary directed and produced by Brett Ratner and centered on Melania Trump. It follows her activities and preparations during the 20 days leading up to Donald Trump’s January 20, 2025, presidential inauguration.

It premiered at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., on January 29, 2026, before the wide release.
The documentary became available on Melania on Prime Video on March 9, 2026. That later streaming release gives the film another audience beyond the people who paid to see it in theaters, but streaming availability should not be retroactively counted as theatrical attendance or box-office revenue.

Calling the film an outright theatrical failure leaves out its unusually strong opening. A $7.16 million debut is a meaningful result for a documentary, particularly one that was not expected to compete with conventional studio entertainment at that level.

But calling it an unqualified success also ignores the rapid decline, the uneven theater-level evidence, and the gap between its final theatrical gross and reported spending. The film’s commercial story is better understood as a high-interest launch followed by limited staying power.

Reviews were generally unfavorable after release. TIME framed the project as a form of branding rather than a conventional documentary, while Rotten Tomatoes lists it as a PG documentary biography with a runtime of 104 minutes. Those reactions may have reduced the film’s ability to expand beyond its core political audience, although reviews alone cannot establish the cause of the second-weekend drop.
A precise verdict on Trump’s statement
The most defensible summary is:
Trump’s claim that Melania was “selling out, FAST” overstated the breadth and consistency of demand. Some individual screenings sold out, but reporting also found lightly booked or empty showings. The documentary opened better than expected at about $7.16 million domestically, then dropped sharply and finished with roughly $16.56 million worldwide in theaters.
That wording preserves both parts of the record. The film had a real audience and an unusually strong documentary opening. Yet the available evidence does not support the idea that theaters nationwide were rapidly selling out.

Frequently Asked Questions
Did Melania sell out theaters nationwide?
No. Some individual screenings sold out, but reporting also found lightly booked and apparently empty showings. The available evidence does not establish a nationwide sellout pattern.
How much money did Melania make?
The Numbers lists $16,357,453 in domestic gross and $199,327 internationally, for a worldwide theatrical total of $16,556,780. Those are box-office grosses, not the amount returned directly to Amazon MGM after theaters’ share.
Was Melania a box-office flop?
It had an unusually strong opening for a documentary, earning about $7.16 million domestically, but its second weekend fell approximately 67% and its final theatrical gross was modest relative to reported spending estimates. An exact profit or loss cannot be calculated from public data.
Where can viewers watch Melania?
The film became available on Prime Video on March 9, 2026, after its theatrical release.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Trump’s “Selling out, FAST!” description was too broad. Melania generated real interest, produced a surprisingly strong documentary opening, and sold out selected screenings—but uneven advance sales, a steep second-weekend decline, and a roughly $16.56 million worldwide theatrical total do not support the claim that theaters nationwide were rapidly selling out.
