It said Ball would return as a producer. TheWrap described the project as a “continuation,” not a sequel or remake, while noting that its story and characters were not confirmed.
What was reported about the new Maze Runner film?
On May 3, 2024, TheWrap reported that Disney’s 20th Century Studios was developing another Maze Runner film. The report is the latest detailed status established here; it does not verify the project’s status as of October 2026. No release date, filming schedule, or confirmed cast was reported.
TheWrap also reported that writer Jack Paglen was in talks to write the film. Being in talks is not confirmation that he was ultimately hired.
What is the difference in Wes Ball’s role?
Wes Ball directed the original The Maze Runner, released September 19, 2014, according to 20th Century Studios’ film page. For the proposed new installment, TheWrap reported Ball as a producer—not as its director. The report does not establish who, if anyone, was hired to direct the new film.

Ball’s official portfolio lists the original Maze Runner films, but provides no status update on the new installment: Wes Ball’s official site.
Is it a sequel, a remake, or a continuation?
TheWrap characterized the project as neither a sequel nor a remake, but a “continuation.” That is the outlet’s description of the proposal, not a confirmed account of the finished film’s structure. The report said it would presumably follow new characters trying to escape the Glade; “presumably” matters, because no official synopsis or connection to a particular novel was established.
