P. Monninger, and the title also refers to a 2025 film based on the book. The story follows Heather Mulgrew, whose post-college trip through Europe changes course after she meets Jack, a traveler tracing a route from his grandfather’s journal. This guide distinguishes the novel from the adaptation and identifies the main editions.
What is The Map That Leads to You about?
Heather Mulgrew sets out to travel through Europe with friends after college before returning to the career she has planned. On an overnight train, she meets Jack, whose travels are guided by his grandfather’s journal. Heather’s carefully arranged itinerary gives way to a journey with Jack, and their growing connection leads her to reconsider the future she expected to follow.
The publishers frame the novel as a contemporary romance about love, loss, travel and changing priorities. The official synopsis also signals that Jack has a secret that could change everything, but does not need to be spoiled to understand the premise.
Is it a book or a movie?
It is both. J. P. Monninger wrote the novel; Prime Video lists a 2025 film adaptation based on it. Mentioning the format is useful when searching for the title or choosing a version.

Which book edition should you look for?
Match the ISBN to the format and territory rather than relying on the title alone. The publisher catalogs list these editions:
| Edition | Publication details | ISBN |
|---|---|---|
| US paperback, St. Martin’s Griffin | August 5, 2025; 400 pages | 9781250427502 |
| Australian paperback, Penguin | August 26, 2025; 400 pages | 9781761359361 |
| Australian ebook, Penguin eBooks | June 13, 2017; 368 pages | 9780143788393 |
Macmillan also lists a 2018 edition at 400 pages, so check the ISBN and format on a retailer’s listing to confirm which edition it describes. The page counts above are publisher specifications for those editions.

What is known about the 2025 film?
Prime Video lists a 2025 adaptation with a runtime of 1 hour 38 minutes, directed by Lasse Hallström. Its listed cast includes Madelyn Cline, KJ Apa, Sofia Wylie, Madison Thompson, Josh Lucas and Orlando Norman. The listing names Temple Hill Entertainment, Nostromo Pictures and Amazon MGM Studios and identifies the film as based on Monninger’s novel.
A platform listing does not establish that the film is currently available in every country: catalog access and terms vary by territory and can change. Nor does the listing establish that the film includes every detail from the book.

How has the novel been described?
Macmillan presents selected praise for the book, including Nicholas Sparks’s endorsement, “Romantic and unforgettable.” It also reproduces an excerpt attributed to The New York Times Book Review: “It’s also an inspiriting estival fling, one that, as Heather says of her relationship with Jack, melts any residual winter ice.” These are publisher-presented endorsements and review text, not evidence of universal critical consensus.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you read the novel or watch the film?
Choose the novel if you want Monninger’s full prose version of Heather and Jack’s journey; choose the film if you want the screen adaptation listed by Prime Video. The available publisher and platform details establish the premise and basic credits, but do not support a claim that one version is better or that the adaptation reproduces every book detail.
