Brian Wilson, the Beach Boys co-founder and the group’s principal creative force, died on June 11, 2025, at age 82. His family announced the death. The announcement did not disclose a cause of death, and no cause has been established in the contemporaneous reports.

What Brian Wilson’s family announced

Wilson’s family said: “We are heartbroken to announce that our beloved father Brian Wilson has passed away.” The statement was issued by his family and did not identify a cause. Reports from the Associated Press and Los Angeles Times likewise described the death and age without naming a cause.

That distinction matters because Wilson’s family had disclosed in 2024 that he had a neurocognitive disorder and had arranged a conservatorship covering personal and medical affairs. Those disclosures provide background about his later life, but they do not establish what caused his death.

Why Brian Wilson mattered to the Beach Boys

Wilson helped transform the Beach Boys from a Southern California group into national hitmakers and international symbols of surf, cars and summer. He was not only a performer: he was central to the band’s songwriting, arranging, recording and production.

Sounds Of Summer: The Very Best Of The Beach Boys[Remastered]
  • Originally released in 2003, UMe has updated the Beach Boys' classic Sounds Of Summer compilation with new photos and liner notes

The Recording Academy identifies him as a co-founder, arranger and co-writer of songs including “I Get Around,” “Help Me, Rhonda” and “Good Vibrations.” His work expanded what a vocal pop group could sound like, combining close harmonies with unusual instrumental colors, layered studio parts and elaborate arrangements.

From regional band to international ambassadors

The group’s early image made California youth culture legible around the world, but Wilson’s ambitions increasingly moved beyond a simple surf-pop formula. His studio work treated the recording itself as a compositional space, allowing arrangements and performances to be assembled with a precision that was difficult to reproduce onstage.

Pet Sounds: the clearest entry point

Pet Sounds is the most direct album-length introduction to Wilson’s craft. The Washington Post describes it as the culmination of his ambitious songwriting and production work; many critics and music historians regard it as a landmark concept album. That description reflects a broad critical assessment, not an objective universal ranking.

For a first listen, the album shows how Wilson balanced intimate songs, vocal harmonies and carefully constructed instrumental textures. It is the strongest single record for hearing his arranging and production ambitions develop across a full sequence rather than one hit.

The long story of Smile

Smile became one of the defining unfinished projects in popular music. Wilson began it as an ambitious follow-up during the 1960s, but the original undertaking was not completed then. TIME’s retrospective treats the project’s later completion and performance as a major part of his legacy.

The later Smile is therefore both a piece of music and a record of changing circumstances: an idea developed in one era and brought to audiences in another. It helps explain why Wilson’s career cannot be reduced to the Beach Boys’ early image or to a list of hit singles.

A complicated life beyond the records

Wilson’s biography included periods of illness, addiction and intense personal difficulty. Those experiences shaped the public story around him, but they should not eclipse the work itself or turn a complicated life into a diagnosis. The 2024 family disclosure about neurocognitive disorder belongs in the account of his later years; it should not be presented as a cause of death.

What remains

Wilson leaves a body of work that joins accessible pop songwriting to unusually ambitious recording practice. His role as Beach Boys co-founder and creative leader helped define the group’s public sound, while records such as Pet Sounds, “Good Vibrations” and the evolving Smile project show how far he pushed beyond that initial template.

His death closes the life of a musician who changed the possibilities of the pop studio without separating experimentation from melody. The family’s announcement supplies the fact of his death; the recordings supply the enduring account of what he made.
