The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is an animated Middle-earth prequel set 183 years before Frodo’s journey. Directed by Kenji Kamiyama, it tells the story of Helm Hammerhand, his daughter Héra, and the Dunlending lord Wulf during the crisis that leads to the defense of the Hornburg—the fortress later known as Helm’s Deep.
The film is not a continuation of the original trilogy’s plot and is not a live-action Peter Jackson film. Instead, it expands a brief episode from the appendices to J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Return of the King into a feature-length war story with Héra as its principal viewpoint character.
What is The War of the Rohirrim about?
The film follows the royal House of Helm Hammerhand, the legendary King of Rohan. When Freca, a powerful Dunlending lord, is killed after a confrontation with Helm, Freca’s son Wulf turns his anger into a campaign of revenge against Helm and the Rohirrim.
Wulf’s attack drives Helm, his family, and the people of Rohan into the Hornburg. The stronghold becomes the center of a desperate resistance, and its later identity as Helm’s Deep gives the movie its clearest connection to The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.

Although the conflict involves armies and a siege, its emotional core is a family and dynastic struggle. Helm represents the old warrior-king tradition, Wulf is driven by inherited grievance, and Héra must find a way to act when her family and kingdom are threatened. The film therefore presents Rohan’s history on a more personal and concentrated scale than the trilogy’s continent-spanning quest.
Héra is the film’s major expansion of Tolkien’s source material. Tolkien’s appendices provide the historical basis for Helm and the crisis in Rohan, but the movie develops Héra into its central heroic figure and gives the sparse background history a conventional dramatic arc.
How does it fit into the Lord of the Rings timeline?
The War of the Rohirrim takes place approximately 183 years before the events of the original Lord of the Rings film trilogy. That places it generations before Bilbo, Frodo, Aragorn, and the War of the Ring.
Some listings round the interval to about 180 years before The Two Towers, but the film’s official synopsis and trade descriptions identify the more precise placement as 183 years before the original trilogy. It is best understood as a historical prequel rather than a direct sequel.
The story’s strongest link to the trilogy is geographical. The Hornburg is the fortress that later becomes known as Helm’s Deep, the location of one of the franchise’s best-known battles. Watching The Two Towers afterward provides additional context for why the fortress and Helm’s name matter, but prior knowledge of the trilogy is not required to follow the animated film.
Who are Helm, Héra, and Wulf?
Helm Hammerhand
Brian Cox voices Helm Hammerhand, the King of Rohan. Helm is portrayed as a formidable ruler whose strength and pride are tested when Wulf’s revenge threatens his family and people. His name supplies the historical origin for “Helm’s Deep,” although the film focuses on the events surrounding the fortress rather than retelling the battle from the later trilogy.
Héra
Gaia Wise voices Héra, Helm’s daughter and the story’s central protagonist. Her journey is from royal family member to active leader of the resistance. This is an important distinction when discussing Tolkien’s involvement: Héra is substantially developed by the film and should not be described as a major Tolkien character in the same sense as Aragorn, Frodo, or Éowyn.

The principal voice cast includes:
- Brian Cox as Helm Hammerhand
- Gaia Wise as Héra
- Luke Pasqualino as Wulf
- Laurence Ubong Williams as Fréaláf
- Lorraine Ashbourne as Olwyn
- Shaun Dooley as Freca
- Miranda Otto as Éowyn and the film’s narrator
- Billy Boyd as Shank
- Dominic Monaghan as Wrot
Boyd and Monaghan previously played Pippin and Merry in the original trilogy, so their participation creates a recognizable vocal connection without turning the movie into a story about the Fellowship. Christopher Lee is also credited as the voice of Saruman through archival or previously recorded material, according to the listed cast credits.
Who directed the film?
Kenji Kamiyama directed The War of the Rohirrim. His previous work includes Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Blade Runner: Black Lotus. He is the film’s director; Peter Jackson did not direct it.
The production brings together New Line Cinema, Warner Bros. Animation, Sola Entertainment, and associated U.S.-Japan production companies. Philippa Boyens, a screenwriter and producer closely associated with Peter Jackson’s Middle-earth films, was part of the creative team. Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh remain part of the wider franchise’s creative lineage, but the film should not be characterized as a Jackson-directed live-action production.
Howard Shore is associated with a songwriting or music-related credit, while Miranda Otto’s narration provides another deliberate bridge to the earlier films. These connections support the film’s place within the established screen version of Middle-earth without making it a direct continuation of the trilogy.

Why is it animated?
The War of the Rohirrim is an animated feature with an anime-influenced visual design and production approach. Its production listings identify digital animation and list the United States and Japan among the production countries.
The format gives the filmmakers a way to return to the visual world associated with the Lord of the Rings movies while presenting a different kind of Middle-earth story. The subject remains familiar—horses, fortresses, royal politics, and large-scale battle—but the animation distinguishes the film from the live-action trilogy.

That difference is also central to the critical response. Some reviewers saw the animation as an ambitious way to expand the franchise, while others felt that the film’s visual and dramatic impact did not match the original trilogy. The result is better approached as a stylized animated prequel than as an attempt to reproduce the exact experience of Jackson’s live-action films.

Published listings disagree about the runtime. The Numbers lists 150 minutes, while JustWatch lists 134 minutes. That may reflect a source or release-version difference. If runtime matters for a particular screening, check the listing for the exact theatrical, digital, or physical edition rather than treating either figure as universally definitive.
Where can you watch The War of the Rohirrim?
Availability depends on location, service, and the date of checking. The following information applies to the United States listings cited in the research dossier and should be rechecked before publication or viewing.
Streaming and digital rental
Warner Bros. Discovery announced that the film began streaming exclusively on Max in the United States on February 28, 2025. A JustWatch United States snapshot checked on August 11, 2026 listed the film through HBO Max/Max-related services, as well as digital rental and purchase options through Amazon Video, the Apple TV Store, and Fandango At Home.
Those services are distribution and retail options, not a guarantee that the title is included in every subscription tier or available in every country. Prices, catalogs, and platform names can change.
Physical editions
The Numbers records a Warner Home Video release on December 27, 2024. JustWatch’s United States listing includes DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K UHD purchase options. Readers who want a disc copy can look for The War of the Rohirrim Blu-ray, while collectors and compatible home-theater owners can look for The War of the Rohirrim 4K UHD. Edition-specific picture, sound, and bonus-feature claims should be checked against the retailer’s current listing.
For Tolkien context, Tolkien’s Return of the King appendices are the relevant source-text companion. The film expands a concise historical account rather than adapting a conventional novel chapter-by-chapter, so the book is useful for background on Rohan and Helm Hammerhand, not a complete screenplay of the movie.
How was the film received?
Critical and audience reception was mixed. The cited JustWatch snapshot displayed a 50% Rotten Tomatoes score and an IMDb rating of 6.3/10 on August 11, 2026. Scores can change as platforms update their databases, but the overall picture is clear: the film attracted interest as a new Middle-earth entry without receiving the uniformly enthusiastic response associated with the original trilogy.

The Guardian criticized the film’s visual and dramatic limitations in comparison with the earlier movies. The Associated Press presented it as a smaller-scale Middle-earth experience and emphasized its connection to the origins of Helm’s Deep. Taken together, those reactions suggest a useful expectation: viewers receive recognizable mythology, a substantial siege, and a meaningful franchise connection, but not another Return of the King-scale event.

According to The Numbers, The War of the Rohirrim had a reported production budget of approximately $30 million. Its recorded theatrical figures were:
| Measure | Reported figure |
|---|---|
| U.S. domestic gross | $9,158,572 |
| International gross | Approximately $11.6 million |
| Worldwide gross | $20,758,572 |
| U.S. opening weekend | $4,552,109 from 2,602 theaters |
The reported worldwide theatrical gross was roughly 0.7 times the listed production budget, before marketing and distribution expenses. That points to a weak theatrical performance on those narrow measures, but it does not prove that the film was unprofitable overall. Streaming arrangements, physical sales, digital rentals and purchases, licensing, marketing costs, and other revenue are not fully disclosed in the cited figures.
Should you watch it before or after the original trilogy?
There is no required order. The film is chronologically earlier, but the original trilogy establishes the importance of Rohan and Helm’s Deep more effectively for a first-time viewer.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

- For the clearest franchise introduction: watch The Lord of the Rings trilogy first, then use The War of the Rohirrim as historical background.
- For chronological Middle-earth viewing: watch The War of the Rohirrim first, followed by the trilogy. Expect references and locations to have more significance after the later films.
- For a self-contained animated war story: begin with The War of the Rohirrim. You need only basic awareness that Rohan is the kingdom of the horse-lords and that the Hornburg later becomes Helm’s Deep.
The original trilogy is a particularly relevant companion because The Two Towers shows Helm’s Deep in its later, iconic form. The two films are connected by history and setting, not by a continuing Frodo-centered plot.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is The War of the Rohirrim a sequel to The Lord of the Rings?

Is Peter Jackson the director?
No. Kenji Kamiyama directed the film. Philippa Boyens and other creatives associated with the earlier Middle-earth films helped connect it to the franchise, but it is not a live-action Peter Jackson production.
Is Héra a character from Tolkien’s original novels?
The film’s Héra is based on the historical material about Rohan in Tolkien’s appendices, but the movie substantially expands her role and makes her the central heroic viewpoint character. She should not be described as a major Tolkien-authored protagonist on the same basis as Frodo or Éowyn.

The Bottom Line
The best way to understand The War of the Rohirrim is as a focused, anime-influenced history of Rohan—not as another chapter in Frodo’s story. Its strongest franchise connection is the origin of Helm’s Deep, while its most significant creative change is making Héra the leader of the resistance. Viewers should expect familiar Middle-earth mythology and siege spectacle, but also a smaller-scale film whose mixed reception reflects the challenge of expanding a beloved live-action franchise through animation.
