The Life List is a Netflix romantic drama about Alex Rose, played by Sofia Carson, who sets out to complete the childhood bucket list her mother left for her. The quest brings romance and family revelations, but grief and self-discovery are part of the premise too. Whether it feels “fluffy” depends on how well that lighter, feel-good tone sits alongside the heavier material.
What is The Life List about?
Alex’s mother, Elizabeth (Connie Britton), sends her back to a list of ambitions Alex wrote as a child. As Alex takes on its challenges, she encounters family secrets, romance and questions about the life she has chosen. The official synopsis describes the journey as a chance to rediscover herself.

The list gives the story a succession of varied episodes: Alex tries an open-mic night at a comedy club, leads a classroom in a women’s shelter, takes part in a charity event and plays one-on-one basketball. The official description also points to a return to her childhood home. These assignments make the premise more than a simple checklist: they place Alex in situations that connect her present to her family and earlier hopes, without revealing where each encounter leads.
Is The Life List worth watching?
It is a fit for viewers looking for a feel-good romantic drama with family themes, rather than a comedy that stays light from beginning to end. Netflix groups the film under both “Drama” and “Romantic Movies”; its promotional coverage calls it a romantic comedy while also describing it in emotional, coming-of-age terms. “Fluffy” is best understood as a judgment about its accessible, optimistic approach—not an official genre label or a promise that grief and family secrets are absent.
#1 Best Overall
The premise puts Alex’s personal growth and her family’s story alongside the romance, so the film’s appeal is not limited to the question of whom she will fall for. The list supplies a clear framework for change, while its different challenges create an episodic shape. Viewers who enjoy stories about people revisiting old ambitions may welcome that structure; those wanting a romance to dominate every part of the plot may find the family and self-discovery threads equally important.
How does the film balance romance, grief and reinvention?
The central tension is built into Alex’s assignment: completing the list means following a path her mother has set in motion, while the journey is also about figuring out what Alex wants for herself. That gives the film an emotional premise beneath its upbeat, task-by-task setup. Netflix’s official materials foreground both loss and family as well as feel-good and emotional elements, so expecting an uncomplicated romantic comedy would miss part of the story’s framing.

Writer-director Adam Brooks has described the film as a story of reinvention. In a Netflix Tudum interview, he said he hoped it would resonate as a story about taking stock of who you are and whether you are living authentically. That is promotional commentary from the filmmaker, not an independent assessment of how successfully the film achieves that aim.
What to know about the adaptation and cast
Brooks wrote and directed the film, adapting Lori Nelson Spielman’s novel of the same name. His description of the relationship between page and screen is deliberately two-sided: “The script is faithful to the book, but there’s a lot of reinvention.” That establishes his stated approach, but it does not identify particular changes. Readers who want a direct comparison should treat the novel as an optional companion rather than assume the film reproduces every plot detail.
Sofia Carson plays Alex, Connie Britton plays her mother Elizabeth, and Kyle Allen plays Brad. Sebastian de Souza is also among the cast. These are the principal roles identified in Netflix’s official materials; they do not by themselves establish how much screen time each character receives or how the performances land.
