The Legend of Korra ends with Korra and Asami entering the Spirit World together. The co-creators confirmed that the scene was meant to show romantic feelings and the beginning of a relationship—not just a close friendship. The portal marks their next step as a couple, while the handholding, pose and music reinforce that meaning.

What happens at the end of The Legend of Korra?

After the events of the finale, Korra and Asami stand together and enter the Spirit World through the portal. The series closes on the two of them facing one another and holding hands as they step through. The ending leaves their future offscreen, but the creators clarified what the moment signifies.

Are Korra and Asami a couple at the end?

Yes. Co-creator Michael Dante DiMartino said, “Our intention with the last scene was to make it as clear as possible that yes, Korra and Asami have romantic feelings for each other.” He also explained, “The moment where they enter the spirit portal symbolizes their evolution from being friends to being a couple.” Vanity Fair reproduced DiMartino’s explanation.

That clarification makes the closing scene a romantic beginning, rather than a fan interpretation of an otherwise platonic farewell. The show does not depict a later relationship milestone before it ends; the portal scene is where the series signals their transition.

Why does the Spirit World portal matter?

The portal is both a literal destination and a visual marker of the relationship’s development. DiMartino described entering it together as a symbol of Korra and Asami moving from friendship to being a couple. The ending places their shared journey into the Spirit World alongside the beginning of their romantic one.

How do the handholding, pose and music signal romance?

Co-creator Bryan Konietzko described the closing scene as a deliberate set of choices, not an accidental reading of the animation. The handholding was written into the script; storyboards and retakes refined the staging; the final pose echoed Varrick and Zhu Li’s nuptial pose; and composer Jeremy Zuckerman was asked to make the music tender and romantic. Konietzko said the creators wanted the intended relationship to be unambiguous, while also acknowledging limits on how far the network would let them go. His comments were reported by Vanity Fair.

Konietzko also recalled, “It was originally written in the script over a year ago that Korra and Asami held hands as they walked into the spirit portal.” In another explanation of the relationship’s development, he said, “The more Korra and Asami’s relationship progressed, the more the idea of a romance between them organically blossomed for us.” Vanity Fair reproduced both statements.

What the finale leaves open

The ending confirms the creators’ romantic intent, but it does not show what happens to Korra and Asami afterward. Their later relationship milestones and the broader political aftermath are separate questions from what the final scene establishes. For behind-the-scenes context on the last season, Dark Horse lists The Legend of Korra: The Art of the Animated Series—Book Four: Balance (Second Edition), released July 27, 2022, with creator commentary; it is optional, not necessary to understand the ending.
