Probably many will, but no available evidence can tell us how many. The Last of Us has retained substantial audience reach, and Season 3 was planned for 2027 in a June 2026 report. That makes the “two-year wait” approximate—not a confirmed gap between premiere dates—and there is no announced premiere date in that report.
When is The Last of Us Season 3 coming out?
Season 2 debuted in April 2025. The Los Angeles Times reported on June 8, 2026, that HBO and Warner Bros. Discovery chief Casey Bloys had said Season 3 was planned for 2027, but that an exact premiere date had not been announced. A 2027 release would put the wait at roughly two years or more from Season 2, depending on the eventual date; it is not a precise two-year schedule.
The same report said production began in March 2026 and was scheduled to continue through late November. Filming paused from June 1 to June 28 for local preparations around World Cup matches in Vancouver. The Times described the pause as planned, not a cancellation. HBO had renewed the series for a third season before Season 2 premiered.
What do the audience numbers say—and what don’t they?
Warner Bros. Discovery said in 2025 that the series’ global audience exceeded 90 million since Season 1 ended, as Season 2 arrived. That broad cumulative figure signals the show’s reach, but it is not identified as a count of unique viewers, an isolated Season 2 audience, or a forecast for Season 3.

For the Season 2 finale, WBD reported 3.7 million U.S. cross-platform viewers on its first night. HBO had reported 8.2 million viewers for the Season 1 finale across HBO Max and linear telecasts on its Sunday night in 2023. These are useful audience markers, but the reports use different measurement language and do not establish a precise like-for-like retention decline.
| Figure | What it measures | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| More than 90 million | WBD’s 2025 description of the show’s global audience since Season 1 ended, as Season 2 arrived. | Unique viewers, Season 2-only viewing, or expected Season 3 returns. |
| 3.7 million | WBD’s reported U.S. cross-platform audience for the Season 2 finale on its first night. | How many will watch Season 3. |
| 8.2 million | HBO’s reported audience for the Season 1 finale across HBO Max and linear telecasts on its Sunday night in 2023. | A directly comparable retention rate against the Season 2 finale figure. |
None of these measures follows the same viewers forward to 2027. Without a direct survey, cohort-retention figure, or Season 3 forecast, they support the conclusion that the series has had substantial reach—not a numerical prediction of how many fans will return.

Could Season 3’s Abby perspective keep viewers interested?
The Los Angeles Times reported that the Season 2 ending’s calendar reset points to Abby in post-apocalyptic Seattle for Season 3. That is reported story direction, not a complete official synopsis. It offers a different viewpoint and a way to revisit events around the cliffhanger, but it also asks viewers strongly invested in Ellie to engage with Abby’s side of the story.
Co-creator and showrunner Craig Mazin described the creative aim to the Times: “Our challenge now is to make you question whether you hate Abby at all and maybe make you start to love her and then be confused,” he said. “Where are my loyalties? What is the concept of a hero? That requires an actor who can inspire those thoughts without sweating, and we have that in Kaitlyn.” The statement explains the intended emotional challenge; it does not guarantee how viewers will respond.
