The Last of Us Season 3 is in production and is targeted for 2027, but HBO has not announced an exact premiere date. The season is expected to shift its focus to Abby, played by Kaitlyn Dever, and continue adapting The Last of Us Part II. HBO has renewed the series; reports of a cancellation are contradicted by production plans.
When will The Last of Us Season 3 come out?
HBO has not set a specific premiere day or month. HBO executive Casey Bloys has described 2027 as the target. In remarks quoted by the Los Angeles Times, Bloys said, “The series is definitely planned for 2027.” That is a release window, not a confirmed date.
Bloys also said the creative team had not decided whether the remaining story would take two more seasons or one longer season. That uncertainty concerns the adaptation’s eventual structure; it does not change the current plan for a third season.
Is The Last of Us Season 3 canceled?
No. HBO renewed the series for Season 3, and production began in March 2026. A temporary pause from June 1 to June 28 was described as planned around Vancouver World Cup logistics, with filming scheduled to continue through late November. A planned production pause is not evidence of cancellation.

What will Season 3 be about?
Season 2 ended by changing the point of view, setting up the other side of the revenge story. Season 3 is expected to center Abby and reconstruct events from her perspective, rather than simply continuing Ellie’s Season 2 storyline in a straight line. HBO had not released an official Season 3 logline in the latest cited update, so specific episode events and the season’s exact scope remain unannounced.
Craig Mazin described the challenge of adapting Abby’s story to the Los Angeles Times: “Our challenge now is to make you question whether you hate Abby at all and maybe make you start to love her and then be confused.” The perspective shift is central to that aim: viewers are being asked to reconsider what they know about the conflict, not just learn what happens next.
The source material is The Last of Us Part II, the sequel to Naughty Dog’s original game. HBO’s adaptation announcement identified the game series as its basis and pointed to Part II as the source for the coming story. Playing Part II offers the most direct context for the material Season 3 is expected to adapt, though the show’s episode-by-episode choices have not been announced.
Who is in The Last of Us Season 3?
The available cast roundup combines announced and reported names, without establishing the same confirmation level for every performer. Dever is expected to be the season’s central star as Abby. The following performers and roles were named for Season 3:
Rank #3
| Performer | Role | Status in the cited update |
|---|---|---|
| Kaitlyn Dever | Abby | Expected to be the season’s central star |
| Bella Ramsey | Ellie | Named in the cast roundup; individual confirmation status not specified |
| Gabriel Luna | Tommy | Named in the cast roundup; individual confirmation status not specified |

Ariela Barer, Tati Gabrielle and Spencer Lord were reported to be continuing in series-regular capacities, despite their Season 2 characters’ deaths. The cited roundup did not confirm Pedro Pascal’s return, so his involvement should not be treated as settled on this information alone. A character’s death, meanwhile, does not by itself establish whether that character can appear in later scenes or how the show will handle the timeline.
Will Season 3 finish the story?
GamesRadar+, reporting on Neil Druckmann’s remarks, said he characterized Season 3 as wrapping up the series’ adaptation of the two games. Treat that as a reported description of the adaptation’s endpoint, not a complete announcement of the season’s structure: Bloys had said the question of one longer final season versus two more seasons was still undecided.

Druckmann, co-creator of the HBO series, also told The Washington Post that he was not shaping the season’s creative direction. As reproduced by GamesRadar+, his words were: “I wasn’t involved in shaping this season’s creative direction, and Naughty Dog did not have a creative role in the direction of this season.” His statement is relevant context about his involvement; it does not, by itself, establish what choices the series will make or how closely it will follow the game.
