For a first watch, follow the DCAU in production order: start with Batman: The Animated Series, then move through its connected series and films. A chronological order is available for a rewatch, but it is a curated proposal—not one definitive, official timeline. The DCAU is also only one part of DC animation: the DC Animated Movie Universe (DCAMU), the Tomorrowverse, and shows such as Teen Titans are separate continuities.
What counts as the DCAU?
The DC Animated Universe is the shared animated continuity that began with Batman: The Animated Series in 1992 and grew into a network of connected series, films, shorts, and spin-offs. The World’s Finest describes the DCAU as a shared continuity launched with that series: The World’s Finest DCAU guide.

The core series are Batman: The Animated Series, Superman: The Animated Series, The New Batman Adventures, Batman Beyond, Static Shock, The Zeta Project, Justice League, and Justice League Unlimited. The web series Gotham Girls and the DCAU films and shorts also fit within the wider continuity.
Similar-looking DC animation that is not part of this timeline
Do not add a film or series to the DCAU solely because it features DC characters or a familiar voice actor. DC notes that some animated films featuring Kevin Conroy and Tim Daly are not continuations of Batman: The Animated Series or Superman: The Animated Series: DC’s continuity clarification. The DCAMU and Tomorrowverse are separate film continuities. Teen Titans, Young Justice, and The Batman are separate animated worlds as well.

Some comics, games, and later projects connected to DCAU characters have disputed status or conflict with the animated series. Treat those as optional rather than as required chapters in the core watch order.
Recommended first-watch order: production sequence
Production order is the clearest route through the main series because it preserves the sequence in which audiences encountered the shows, crossovers, and story developments. This season-level list follows The World’s Finest production order; it does not interrupt seasons to insert individual films or shorts.

The production sequence and episode-level placements for films and shorts are documented in The World’s Finest guide. For a simpler first watch, use the series sequence above and fit the films into the relevant series era rather than stopping repeatedly to follow every cross-title chronological placement.
Optional rewatch: an episode-interleaved chronology
If you want events arranged by story placement instead of production sequence, The World’s Finest chronology offers one detailed proposal. It is useful as a curated rewatch path, not a settled, year-by-year canon: crossovers and stories do not always fit neatly into one timeline. The source’s episode-level list begins as follows:

- Watch Batman: The Animated Series episodes 1–31, then Batman: Mask of the Phantasm.
- Continue with Batman: The Animated Series episodes 32–85, then watch Batman & Mr. Freeze: Sub-Zero.
- Begin Superman: The Animated Series and watch through the three-part “World’s Finest” crossover, interleaving its episodes with The New Batman Adventures as shown in The World’s Finest chronology.
- Continue through the placements for The New Batman Adventures, Gotham Girls, Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman, and the remaining Superman: The Animated Series episodes.
- Follow the source’s interleaved blocks for Static Shock, Justice League, and Justice League Unlimited, then its placements for Batman & Harley Quinn and Justice League vs. The Fatal Five.
- Move into the future-era stories: Batman Beyond, The Zeta Project, and Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker. The chronology places Justice League Unlimited’s “Epilogue” last.
Those steps summarize the chronology’s major blocks, not every episode-level transition. For precise interleaving, use the full chronological list; the source’s simplified chart likewise places the future-era material toward the end and “Epilogue” as its final entry.

| Approach | Best for | How it works | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Production order | First-time viewers | Watch the connected series in the sequence listed above; place films in their relevant series era. | It does not arrange every story by in-universe chronology. |
| Episode-interleaved chronology | Rewatchers who want story placement | Follow The World’s Finest episode-level list, including its film placements. | It is an editorial chronology and interrupts seasons to move between shows. |
For most viewers, production order is easier to follow. Choose chronology when the appeal is seeing the stories in a proposed in-universe sequence and you are comfortable switching between series and films.
