Joel Edgerton gives Robert Grainier an affecting restraint, while director Clint Bentley lets work, love, solitude and grief gather meaning over time. It is not a plot-driven western; its power lies in what change leaves behind.
What is Train Dreams about?
Set in the early 20th-century Pacific Northwest, the film follows Robert Grainier, an orphan who works as a logger and railroad laborer. As industrial expansion transforms the world around him, his life takes shape through labor, marriage, parenthood, solitude and loss. The story is less about a single dramatic accomplishment than about the depth and value of a life that history might otherwise overlook.

Bentley has described Grainier as someone who does not alter the course of history, yet lives a rich life. That idea gives the film its emotional center: the world keeps changing, and a person can feel left behind even while still living within it.
Is Train Dreams worth watching?
Yes, especially if you are open to a reflective drama that asks you to watch and feel rather than follow a chain of plot twists. Work and landscape are not just background. The forests and railroad camps are where Grainier earns a living and encounters the upheaval of his era; the natural world also gives the film much of its emotional atmosphere.

The film’s sadness is inseparable from its tenderness. It treats grief as part of a long human life, not as a cue for constant dramatic escalation. The result can be moving and quietly inspiring, but viewers looking for a fast-paced western or a sweeping account of public events may find its focus deliberately modest.
Is Joel Edgerton good in it?
Edgerton’s performance is the film’s anchor. He plays Grainier with deliberate restraint, making observation and presence more important than showy speeches. The Associated Press described the performance as understated and profound, a fitting approach for a character whose significance emerges through accumulated experience rather than grand gestures.

That quietness helps the film’s central idea land: an unremarkable public footprint does not mean an unimportant private life.
How do the direction and cinematography shape the film?
Bentley co-wrote the screenplay with Greg Kwedar and directs with a patient, dreamlike sensibility. Adolpho Veloso’s cinematography makes the Pacific Northwest landscape central to the experience, giving the film an atmosphere that supports its themes of work, change and loss.
In the Associated Press review, Lindsey Bahr called the film “haunting and patient” and described it as a journey through a disappearing world. That is a useful guide to its approach: it favors landscape and mood over plot-forward coverage, while keeping its attention on one person’s experience of historical change.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Train Dreams based on a book?
Yes. Bentley and Kwedar adapted Denis Johnson’s novella. Netflix says it first appeared in The Paris Review in 2002 and was published as a standalone book in August 2011. The novella is the natural next read for anyone who wants to explore the source behind the film.

Is Train Dreams really an Oscar contender?
It is an Oscar-nominated film: Netflix Tudum reported four Academy Award nominations on January 22, 2026—Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay for Bentley and Kwedar, Cinematography for Veloso, and Original Song for “Train Dreams,” by Nick Cave and Bryce Dessner. Those nominations make the awards-season framing substantive, but a nomination is not an Oscar win.
The film also won the top film prize at the Film Independent Spirit Awards on February 15, 2026, and Bentley won best director, according to the Associated Press. That is significant recognition, separate from the Academy nominations.
