Michael Fassbender stars as a man who insists his work is never personal, even as the consequences of a failed job draw him into a pursuit that tests that claim.
What is The Killer about?
The film follows an assassin on an international manhunt after a job goes wrong. Netflix’s official description frames the story around his conflict with both his employers and himself; his insistence that the pursuit is not personal sits uneasily beside the harm caused by the near miss. That gap between professional detachment and personal consequences supplies the central tension.
The character relies on rules, repetition and self-discipline. Those routines help establish who he is and shape the film’s suspense; they are elements of characterization, not a practical guide to violence.
Who made and stars in the film?
David Fincher directed The Killer, and Andrew Kevin Walker wrote the screenplay. The cast includes Michael Fassbender, Charles Parnell, Arliss Howard, Sophie Charlotte and Tilda Swinton, according to Netflix’s Media Center. The film was also listed in the 2023 Venice competition, with Fincher and Walker credited as director and screenwriter in La Biennale di Venezia’s listing.

Is The Killer based on a graphic novel?
Yes. The film is based on the French graphic-novel series The Killer, written by Alexis Nolent, who works under the name Matz, and illustrated by Luc Jacamon. Netflix identifies Éditions Casterman as the series’ original French publisher. The original graphic-novel series is the most direct next step for viewers curious about the source material; a specific English-language edition or current retailer listing is not established here.
What is the film’s style?
The Associated Press review describes an opening built around an assassin waiting in Paris and narrating his method, and characterizes the film as minimalist and controlled, with an emotionally withheld lead. Those are the reviewer’s observations, rather than a universal critical consensus. The contrast between the protagonist’s composed routines and the increasingly personal stakes gives the thriller much of its tension. The Smiths also feature as a listening motif; Netflix Tudum reports that screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker discussed the film’s Smiths-laden soundtrack.
