The Seinfeld episode “The Hamptons” grew from a real-life beach anecdote, but the famous “shrinkage” gag was a collaborative invention. Writer Peter Mehlman recalled that Larry David pitched the pool-exit situation and that Mehlman responded with the word “shrinkage.” Co-writer Carol Leifer later said she was unsure whether Mehlman or David came up with it, so the precise credit remains unsettled.
What inspired “The Hamptons”?
Peter Mehlman recalled that the starting point was a summer in the Hamptons when a friend’s girlfriend went topless at the beach. Mehlman’s friend had worked to get a view; Mehlman said he saw it for free. He liked the Hamptons as a setting and imagined George’s girlfriend going topless before George had a chance to see her.
That initial idea became a story about George expecting a kind of romantic quid pro quo: if his girlfriend had gone topless, he hoped to see Jerry’s girlfriend that way too. Larry David redirected the setup. In Mehlman’s recollection, David suggested that Jerry’s girlfriend instead see George naked when he emerged from the pool. Mehlman said he replied, “Oh, you mean, like, he’s got shrinkage?” David’s response, as Mehlman recalled it, was: “Yes, shrinkage, and use that word a lot.” Mehlman’s account is a retrospective recollection of the writing-room exchange.
Who came up with the word “shrinkage”?
The best-supported account is that Mehlman voiced the word after David proposed the pool scenario, while David encouraged the writers to make it a recurring comic term. That is more precise than saying one person unquestionably invented the entire gag: the setup and the wording came together in the exchange Mehlman described.

Co-writer Carol Leifer later made the attribution less certain. In a 2014 interview, she said, “I must mention that while I did co-write ‘The Hamptons’ with Peter Mehlman, I don’t know if he came up with ‘shrinkage’ or Larry did.” Leifer’s recollection means the precise origin should not be presented as settled. A separate recap of a Leifer interview credits David, but it is less specific than Mehlman’s first-person description of the exchange.
How the other storylines fit together
Elaine, the baby, and the pediatrician
Elaine’s visit to friends with an ugly baby supplied another strand. Their pediatrician calls both the baby and Elaine “breathtaking,” turning an awkward visit into a running question about whether the doctor means it as a compliment or an insult.

Kramer and the stolen lobster
Kramer’s lobster theft gave Michael Richards a physical-comedy thread on the beach, separate from George’s poolside embarrassment and Elaine’s baby visit.
The dinner scene that connected the plots
Mehlman said the script stalled in its second act. He recalled that Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld later added the dinner scene in which George worries that Jerry’s girlfriend will tell George’s girlfriend what she saw. Mehlman said the episode came together after that pass, with its characters moving between situations in a way he likened to a French farce. These are Mehlman’s retrospective accounts of the writing process, not production notes.

Mehlman said he supplied most of the story elements while Leifer contributed many lines, including Jerry’s “And then came Maude!” when Elaine appears in a large hat. His account presents the finished episode as collaborative: an initial premise, a changed central setup, separate comic strands, and later revisions that tied them together.

What “shrinkage” means in the scene
The joke is that George’s penis appears smaller after he comes out of cold water, at exactly the moment Jerry’s girlfriend sees him. In the oral history, Alex Shteynshlyuger, identified as Director of Urology at New York Urology Specialists, described the physical response as “the skin contracting” as muscle fibers below the skin contract to preserve heat. That is an attributed explanation in an entertainment interview, not individualized medical advice. Read the explanation in context.
