Content warning: This article discusses an adult sexual anecdote, alleged sexually transmitted infection symptoms, and bodily fluids in non-graphic terms.
The Jolly Rancher story is best understood as an infamous Reddit legend—not a confirmed medical case. Its surviving trail leads to an archived r/MuseumOfReddit post dated February 20, 2013, which points back to an older AskReddit comment. The anecdote has been copied, retold, narrated, and referenced for years, but there is no reliable evidence that the alleged encounter happened as described.
What is the Jolly Rancher story?
The story’s shock premise is simple: during oral sex, a man allegedly puts a Jolly Rancher hard candy in his mouth to mask an unpleasant smell or taste. The candy is supposedly lost during the encounter. When he later finds and bites what he believes is the candy, the retelling claims that it is actually an STI-related growth or lesion.
Later versions add details about cheating, named characters, college locations, vomiting, and fears about an oral infection. Those details vary from copy to copy. Some retellings name gonorrhea; others use different infections or avoid naming one altogether. None of those additions has been independently verified.

That restrained summary is enough to explain why the story became notorious. Reproducing the full graphic version adds little factual value and risks presenting an unverified gross-out anecdote as if it were documented medical history.
The surviving Reddit trail
The strongest surviving source for the title and its place in Reddit culture is the r/MuseumOfReddit post titled “The Jolly Rancher story.” The archive displays a February 20, 2013 date, identifies the item as a preserved Reddit artifact, and points readers toward an older AskReddit comment.
That earlier material is generally associated with an AskReddit thread titled “Reddit, What’s the grossest/nastiest thing that’s happened to you in a sexual encounter?” The relevant comment is commonly identified by the Reddit comment ID c0er6q4. The surviving references establish the story’s circulation history, but they do not provide a complete, authoritative record proving the narrator’s identity or the event’s authenticity.
Know Your Meme also identifies the tale as an infamous story from that AskReddit thread and associates it with the username “rivalthecreator.” That is evidence of the story’s place in meme history, not proof that the account was autobiographical.

| What can reasonably be documented | What remains unverified |
|---|---|
| A surviving r/MuseumOfReddit post titled “The Jolly Rancher story” exists and displays a February 20, 2013 date. | That the sexual encounter actually happened. |
| The archive points toward an older AskReddit comment associated with the tale. | That the original poster was the person involved. |
| The story has been repeatedly reposted, discussed, narrated, and treated as Reddit folklore. | The identities, names, colleges, cheating details, or medical outcome described in later copies. |
| JOLLY RANCHER is a real brand of candy, including original-flavor hard candy. | That a gonorrhea-related growth was mistaken for a Jolly Rancher. |
| Readers have repeatedly reacted to the story as a notorious “rite of passage” or Reddit initiation. | That any surviving copy preserves the original wording exactly. |
The distinction matters. A story can be historically important as an internet artifact without being true as a real-world account. The available evidence supports describing this one as a gross-out copypasta, Reddit legend, or folklore artifact—not as a confirmed incident.
Why later copies cause confusion
Online stories rarely remain fixed. Once a shocking post becomes recognizable, users reproduce it in comments, copypasta collections, reaction threads, videos, and recommendation lists. Each reproduction can add names, dialogue, locations, medical terminology, or an ending designed to make the reveal more memorable.
A commonly circulated expanded version includes fictionalized names such as Steve and Samantha, college details, a cheating reveal, an alleged gonorrhea nodule, and concern about oral infection. Those elements belong to later transmission versions unless a reliable source independently establishes them. They should not be treated as biographical facts about real people.
This explains why readers may encounter several “original” versions with different wording or different infections. The inconsistencies are evidence of copying and adaptation, not a reason to choose the most graphic version as the definitive one.

A medical reality check
Gonorrhea can infect the genitals, rectum, and throat, and oral sex can transmit the infection. Many infections cause no symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they can include painful urination, genital discharge, bleeding between periods, rectal discharge or soreness, or—when the throat is infected—sometimes a sore throat. The CDC’s gonorrhea guidance explains that diagnosis depends on testing, which may involve urine or site-specific swabs.
CDC guidance does not describe a Jolly-Rancher-sized gonorrhea nodule as a typical manifestation. It discusses genital, rectal, and pharyngeal infection and, in rare disseminated cases, pustular skin lesions; it does not validate the signature lesion in the Reddit story.

That is not the same as proving that every detail is medically impossible. It means that the story’s central medical image is not substantiated by the cited clinical guidance. A viral anecdote cannot diagnose an infection, and a person concerned about exposure should contact a clinician or sexual-health service.
Different conditions can produce overlapping symptoms. Gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, herpes, bacterial vaginosis, and candidiasis are not interchangeable diagnoses, and odor or discharge alone cannot establish which condition is present. The CDC’s STI treatment guidelines emphasize evaluation and testing rather than diagnosis by appearance or internet comparison. A lesion, unusual discharge, pain, or suspected exposure deserves professional assessment.

The tale has an unusually efficient shock mechanism. It combines:
- An ordinary object: a familiar fruit-flavored hard candy.
- A taboo setting: an intimate sexual encounter.
- A medical fear: an alleged sexually transmitted infection.
- A mistaken-identity reveal: the supposedly lost candy is said to be something else.
- A vivid sensory detail: the moment of biting into the object.
The candy gives the story a memorable title. Someone can forget a username or a thread URL while still remembering “the Jolly Rancher story.” That mnemonic quality helps explain why the anecdote continues to appear in reaction videos, narration, comment replies, and lists of legendary Reddit posts.
The story’s incomplete archival trail also helps it persist. Readers encounter references to it before they find the archive, ask whether it is real, and direct newcomers toward old copies. The comments preserved around the r/MuseumOfReddit entry show this cycle: warnings not to read it, questions from people unfamiliar with the reference, and reminders from users who encountered it years earlier.
Rank #4
Research on Reddit legends provides a useful framework here. Digital folklore does not require a story to have a verifiable author or complete archive. Repeated retellings, communal recognition, and references to a supposedly older source can be enough to give an anecdote a durable cultural life. The Jolly Rancher story fits that pattern particularly well.

Content note: The following product reference concerns the ordinary candy named by the legend; it is not a suggestion to recreate, stage, or use the story as a prank.
JOLLY RANCHER original hard candy is a real commercial product, and the brand’s official materials list hard candy alongside other formats such as chews, lollipops, gummies, and assorted fruit-flavored products. The ordinary candy is the cultural object that supplies the story’s title. Its existence says nothing about whether the alleged incident occurred.
That distinction is important because the story’s notoriety can make the product itself seem like evidence. It is not. The brand predates and exists independently of the Reddit anecdote; the candy merely provides the familiar object around which the legend’s reveal is built.

If you are documenting or discussing it, the safest wording is:
Recommended Free Tools
- “The Jolly Rancher story is an infamous Reddit legend.”
- “The surviving archive points to an older AskReddit comment.”
- “The copypasta claims that a man mistook an STI-related growth for a hard candy.”
- “Later versions vary in their names, medical terminology, and details.”
- “There is no independent confirmation that the alleged incident happened.”
Avoid calling it a “true story,” a “confirmed gonorrhea case,” or medical proof of what gonorrhea looks like. Also avoid presenting the names Steve and Samantha, the college locations, or the cheating subplot as verified facts. They appear in later copies and are part of the story’s transmission history.

What the archive can—and cannot—preserve
An archive can preserve the existence of a post, its title, its displayed date, its relationship to a subreddit, and links or references to earlier material. It cannot automatically establish that an anonymous story is true. In this case, the archive is valuable precisely because it documents how Reddit remembered the tale.
The original AskReddit comment is referenced by ID, but the available evidence does not establish a complete, authoritative copy with independently verified authorship and provenance. The responsible conclusion is therefore limited but useful: the Jolly Rancher story is a documented piece of Reddit’s folklore ecosystem whose alleged real-world events remain unverified.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Jolly Rancher story real?
There is no reliable independent evidence that the alleged sexual encounter or medical incident happened. It is best treated as an unverified Reddit legend and copypasta.

Where did the Jolly Rancher story originate?
The surviving trail points to an AskReddit thread about the grossest or nastiest sexual encounters, particularly a comment commonly identified as c0er6q4. A February 20, 2013 r/MuseumOfReddit post preserves and points back to the story.
Can gonorrhea cause the lesion described in the story?
CDC guidance confirms that gonorrhea can affect the throat and other sites, but it does not identify a Jolly-Rancher-sized nodule as a typical manifestation. Symptoms and suspected exposures require clinical testing rather than comparison with an internet story.
Are the names and details in the popular version verified?
No. Names such as Steve and Samantha, college locations, cheating details, and specific infection labels appear in later retellings and should not be treated as independently confirmed facts.
The Bottom Line
The Jolly Rancher story survives because it is memorable, easily retold, and repeatedly recognized—not because its alleged medical event has been proven. The archive documents a piece of Reddit folklore; it does not authenticate the anecdote. Treat the story as an internet legend, and treat real STI concerns through testing and medical care.
