“Wellerman” is a 19th-century New Zealand whaling song associated with the Weller brothers’ shore station at Ōtākou, near present-day Dunedin. Its composer and exact date are unknown, and there is no evidence it was sung to coordinate work aboard a ship. What is the real story behind “Wellerman”?
The song is linked to the Weller brothers, whose whaling operations included a shore station established at Ōtākou in 1831. The National Library of New Zealand describes an Otago Harbour origin in the 1830s as very likely, but that is not proof of a precise composition date or place. Its story is often imagined as a small crew waiting at sea for a supply ship. Southern New Zealand whaling was also a shore-based business: whales were brought to land for processing, and stations depended on coastal resources, provisions and relationships with local communities. Was “Wellerman” actually a sea shanty?
In the narrower historical sense, a shanty was a shipboard work song used to coordinate labor. The Library of Congress American Folklife Center notes that accounts of shipboard singing predate the common use of the word: Richard Henry Dana described the practice in 1834, while “shanty” appears in shipboard-singing contexts in the 1850s. Stephen Winick of the Center says there is no evidence “Wellerman” was used as a shanty. The careful description is an occupational song or sea song; “sea shanty” remains familiar popular shorthand, but its use for this song is not securely established. That distinction is about evidence, not impossibility: the available sources do not establish that it was sung aboard ship, but they also do not prove it could never have been. A 1969 NZBC recording held by Ngā Taonga is a later documented recording, not an original 19th-century artifact, so it cannot by itself settle how the song first circulated. Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision
Who were the Wellermen?
The Weller brothers were whaling entrepreneurs operating in southern New Zealand. A “Wellerman” in the song is understood in relation to their business: the lyrics describe a vessel bringing provisions to whaling crews. The familiar refrain names sugar, tea and rum, imported supplies rather than a complete picture of what fed and sustained the stations.

Local production and exchange mattered too. Potatoes, flax and pigs were among the goods produced locally and traded or exported. Shore stations relied on access to coastal land and resources, which meant whalers had to negotiate with Ngāi Tahu communities rather than simply arrive and operate independently. These relationships involved economic exchange, employment and travel, as well as marriage and kinship; the history also included conflict and miscommunication. What does “tonguing” mean?
In the lyrics, “tonguing” refers to cutting strips of blubber from a whale. The blubber was rendered into oil in large try pots at the shore station. Whale oil supplied lighting and industrial lubrication, while baleen—the filtering material from some whales—was made into products before modern plastics. How did whaling affect Māori communities and settlement?
Whaling was not only a transient, masculine pursuit. Ngāi Tahu women’s production and trade helped sustain station economies, while ongoing contact connected whalers and Māori communities through work, exchange, marriage and kinship. Historian Kate Stevens notes that this sustained contact complicates the myth of whaling as simply a transient and masculine pursuit. University of Waikato / The Conversation
Stevens’s 2021 account reports that by 1840 more than 140 men had married Māori women in southern New Zealand, and those couples had more than 500 children. These figures describe that region and period, not all whaling settlements or the whole of New Zealand. Mixed families became part of local settlement and identity. Later Crown land purchases and the conversion of land to individual title formed part of the dispossession of Ngāi Tahu. How did “Wellerman” become an internet hit?
Scottish singer Nathan Evans posted a performance on TikTok on December 28, 2020. Other users joined through TikTok’s duet feature, layering harmonies and accompaniment onto the song. A contemporary University of Waikato account connected the wave of collaborative singing with pandemic isolation. That is an interpretation of why the song resonated, not an established single cause.
